I recently finished watching the original series and haven't seen any of the of the other material and don't really get the love people have for the series, at least not yet.
I've always read how the mechs are treated realistically as a selling point when that is maybe true for the first arc and part of space Vietnam at best. I think the lack of focus on the machines reaches all the way around to not being believable. Nothing is mentioned by name and all the different weapons we see ATs armed with do the same thing on screen.
There being only 3 or so developed characters in any arc and the fights having low stakes as a result really made it a slog for me.
