It's a rather rich show as far as themes go.
Granted, the actual execution is wonky and strange, with mixed results, but i still find it very fascinating.

It's a 54 episodes show squeezed into a 26 episodes show with the budget of a 6 episodes show, of course the execution is strange.
Even putting aside Tomino's mental state at the time it was a lost cause from a technical point of view, they were trying to do way too much with way too little, you can smell the sauce and it's a good smell but then you look into your dish and what little is there is messy, visually unappetizing and undercooked.
