What did we think of this series?

Textbook definition of a 5/10. Mobile suits look good and the fights are pretty good, but the story is just really boring and the humans look really stiff. I don't think any of the characters were well written enough to make this kind of story work in such a short time frame. Solari's the only one that actually qualifies as a character but her arc ends in the dumbest way possible. She didn't really strike me as a Zeek diehard who would stay around with remnant forces on Earth, especially because her kid is back at Side 3 and her motivation being 'I have to keep more kids from dying in war so I'll become a terrorist' is silly. I do like how understated her Newtype abilities are though, they really could have made her go all 'H-Hayai!' on the Feddies.

Aside from her final monologue I agree. It's a bittersweet ending.

As has been stated already, good looking mechs is about all I can give it. From characters to plot to deaths, everything felt like the most generic of war & occasional post-apocalyptic setting tropes
Didn't hate it or anything, but off the top of my head I think I can only say 4 Gundam titles are definitively worse. 2-3 maybes

The Zaku redesign wasn't bad, the Gundam looked awful, the diversity got tiring and I stopped watching when the noseringed lesbian butch with pink hair showed up in ep 2

>The ending was the only sort of decent part.
The ending was retarded. It would've made more sense for the zeon woman, who has become the only "pacifist" among her "death to the feds" comrades, to die rather than the newtype kif. He for some reason couldn't predict/feel that gouf coming from behind him and avoid it thus having the gouf stab the woman in a zaku. This would've been much better tragic ending than what we got.

It was fine.
Some of the fights were good, cool Goufs, I liked treating the Gundam as a slasher villain, a Zeon story set during the retreat from Odessa is a good idea. The characters were pretty bad, though, the newtype shit felt really tacked on, and the feMC trying to save the Gundam's kid pilot was really lame. I cheered when he got Gouf'd.
Most surprising was how good the show looked. Not amazing or anything, but solid. Good work on the 3D.

Yeah, the show looked excellent, I dare say it looks better in stills than it does in motion. The CGI looks a little floaty like everyone is underwater, but it's a notoriously difficult thing to do well especially if your visual style is realism, so I don't mind. What's more interesting me is they decided to use Unreal Engine as their renderer, meaning they basically made the entire miniseries out of game cinematics with the graphics options set to 11. A very novel approach, it reminds me of the early days of CGI shows like ReBoot in that it isn't as refined as "traditional" (CG)animation but it shows where the future might be going.
t. UE3/4/5 dev
>>
>>23727734
Well the film and TV industries already adopted UE5 as their CGI method of choice, everything from big budget Hollywood stuff to Kamen Rider uses it now. Hell if I remember right the guy who directed used whatever the current UE version was when he made that Lord Insuisitor prologue thing for 40k. If anything UE5 is really good at animating big stompy robots and stuff.

I like it even if flawed, 6.5/10.

>She didn't really strike me as a Zeek diehard who would stay around with remnant forces on Earth, especially because her kid is back at Side 3
I think she had already lost it before Odessa and when her last shot to do something meaningful failed she just decided to throw everything away.

I enjoyed how much more fluid the gundam was to the zakus as a comparison; you really felt fucked fighting that thing from the zeeks perspective ("white devil" comes to mind).
>netflix
killed the story and the characters; just forgettable schlock
>>
>>23727841
Couldn't she have left with the Gouf Troop? I think they took off for the last shuttle after killing the Gundam, probably made it.
>>23728649
The story was okay until the newtype nonsense, but the characters were bad. So many of them didn't matter at all, were just sorta there.
My favorite was the asshole Zeon base commander, who got character development to stop being an asshole, but then just forgot or something and went right back to being an asshole.

I'm surprised the Gouf Troop got to see so much action (and we never got a kit)
>>
>>23728661
What about the protagonist that is fighting a war killing kids so that the war could eventually end and she could finally be with her kid.
at that point it was clear the character is and was written by a psycho

EX looked awesome, best re-imagining of the RX-78 in the history of the franchise, plus it actually lived up to the "white devil" nickname. The Zeeks treated it like a horror movie villain though most of the show, and it was great.

Fell flat on its ass right at the end
A woman who wanted to stop the use of children as soldiers stays to continue a fight which by location she fled to would have likely played a part in stardust and ends up deciding her child should be an orphan instead.
Legit retarded character. I hope she was in one of the F2s in stardust and slowly bled out from shrapnel in her cockpit.

I mean it's alright, and I get what they're going for with the gundam, but it moves way too fucking fast in some scene. Turn and stabbed the gouf faster than a human would? Ruins the weight that the MSs and tanks tries to create in other scenes. No way a 0079 MS in Earth gravity can do shit that fast.

People like to say side-cut staying on earth to abandon her son so she can destroy the federation for using child soldiers is out of character and stupid
But
Zeon soldiers, especially remnants, have always been stupid people who don't know when to quit or what is best for them.

Cool designs. It was nice seeing mechanical details fleshed out. The show managed to expand upon the original designs whilst maintaining their "spirit".
Story was meh and not remotely compelling though in fairness it was as logically consistent as other UC series.
Humans were weirdly stiff...
Music was alright.
All in all it was fun to watch the suits, vehicles, and ships in action but I wouldn't call it a good show.

>Humans were weirdly stiff
It felt a bit like they imported MS Igloo era human rigs into the UE5 models/textures and animated according to the old rig. There's also time where the lighting looked good but looked "wrong" at other times, sometimes fringing at the edges?

Seeing a gundam as an implacable, inevitable force of nature slaughtering everything in it's path from the zeek POV was cool.
The actual gundam design was bad. Like they didn't even try to match the visual style of the mechs of the era bad.
The characters were what I expect of netflix: crap.

It was a neat little experiment, bland story, mid acting from tv actor dorks clearly not comfortable with voice work or mocap, I really loved the swivel ball GM head, some of the imagery was fucking fantastic especially the scenes framing the Gundam like a kaiju or slasher villain.
Pic rel was probably the highlight of the whole thing for me, the cast just has this little victory where they just barely defeat a handful of tanks with their own damaged zaku tank and the second they start to celebrate, this dudes just on the hill at the edge of town and completely upends the stakes and the sense of their safety. I wish they didn't bother with the whole "go steal an MS" plot and it was more of a dogged pursuit through europe to odessa.

The OYW slop I didn't know I needed.
All the fight scenes were good fun and the designs were pretty neat.
They laid the "Hero is actually the BAD GUY" shtick on way too thick, Zeon wank always leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
Almost all the human scenes were painfully lackluster or just had wildly off putting dialogue and actions. Still thinking about how they could throw a flashbang DIRECTLY in front of themselves in an open area, the Flash is represented pathetically but still cripples all the feddies and lets them run by unchallenged.
Still, I think the fights were interesting enough to make it worth the watch. I'd definitely buy a GM kit if they ever put one out.

The Goufs were great but the whole thing needed an overhaul in the sound design, The shield vulcans shot too slow, the muzzle flash wasn't near big enough and the stock sound effect they used for it was distractingly low impact and just bad. It was an official Gundam show, why didn't they give them more of the gwonks and brrrrrrrts from their sound library?

Holy shit this is fucking embarrassing. Gives off strong JRPG combat vibes where everyone's just taking their turn doing awkward little dance move. Mechs are so painfully stiff and weightless it makes Pacific Rim 2 look good.

Honestly I kind of respected that it cast all the hesitation in a new light.
It went from spooky scary gundam looming over people and then you realize they're just hovering over crossing that line to cut down opponents who are more or less neutralized at the moment because "it's a war"

Same problem with James Cameron or Neil Blomkamp.
Erasmus Brosdau has vision but he lacks the necessary coherency in his storytelling to reliably deliver a good product. His designs are great, his ideas are solid, but he cannot communicate them in a compelling or even logical way.
