>EXCLUSIVE: Legendary’s live-action feature adaptation of Gundam looks to have found a home as sources tell Deadline that Netflix is on board to distribute the pic. Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo are on board to star with Sweet Tooth director Jim Mickle helming.

>The project has been co-developed between Legendary and franchise owner Bandai Namco Filmworks, from Mickle’s own script. Mickle also will produce with his partner Linda Moran through their production company Nightshade. Centineo is also producing with his partner Enzo Marc.

>The plot is under wraps, but this will mark the first live-action feature in the Gundam world. A live-action Canadian telefilm called G-Saviour aired on TV Asahi in 1999.

Wait, didn’t Netflix previously drop out of production of the live action adaptation?
>>
>>23729159
Yeah, they had the Kong Skull Island guy attached to direct too.

But that was like 5 years ago now
>>
>>23729164
I thought so, wonder what convinced them to get back on the saddle?
>>
>>23729165
Maybe they were spending a lot on the production and got fed up with no results.

"If you ever get this off the ground we would love to distribute it, but we are backing out of the production part" sorta thing
>>
>>23729165
Having all access to all raw footage of Sydney in the movie.
>>

>Wait, didn’t Netflix previously drop out of production of the live action adaptation?
No. They never "dropped out". Where did you even hear that? Netflix was ALWAYS involved in production and distribution of the Gundam movie. The Gundam movie was a partnership between Netflix and several other companies.

The only thing that's changed is the Director. The Kong Skull Island got fired shortly after he offended Tomino.
>>
Why do you care so much about something that'll never happen and will suck even if it does

>Legendary has been high on this priority for some time and one point was working on a movie with Netflix and Jordan Vogt-Roberts but both the streamer and Vogt-Roberts are no longer involved.
>>
>>23729268
Deadline got their informairon wrong. Netflix never dropped out. Only the Director did.
>>
>>23729274
Sure.
>>
>>23729274
>And my name? Yoshiyuki Tomino.
>>
>>23729268
Different anon here.

That's not confirmation of Netflix dropping out. Deadline is just sharing rumors and speculation. They do that all the time. No exit was ever officially confirmed with Netflix.

The only thing we do 100% know is Netflix officially announced they were involved with the live action Gundam and then went quiet since 2022. It's also extremely unlikely Netflix would join production, leave production, and then rejoin production again. Especially in such a short period of time. They are likely just staying quiet.

Plus Netflix has been very interested in anime for a long time and has been dumping millions into expanding their catalog. And spending hundreds of millions of dollars on adapting live action anime like One Piece. Gundam is one the biggest franchises in Asia, and there's no way Netflix is going to miss out on that.
>>
>>23729236
>The only thing that's changed is the Director. The Kong Skull Island got fired shortly after he offended Tomino.
Hold on. Gimme a quick run down? I haven't been paying attention. What did Tomino do?
>>
>>23729287
>and then rejoin production again
They didn't join the production. They are just the distributor
>>
>>23729288
Here's the vague Timeline as I know it.

1. Tomino said it's his life long dream to work on live action movies. He wanted to direct gundam himself, or at least be brought on as a consultant. He wanted to share some ideas he had for the live action movie with the Director.

2. Director Jordan refused to meet Tomino. Rumors say Jordan wanted to keep Tomino away. That Jordan wants to tell his "own" Gundam story.

3. Japanese Media asked Tomino about his thoughts on the live action Gundam movie and if he was excited. Instead of giving a nice politically correct answer, Tomino angrily complained that he's been blacklisted from his own franchise.

Tomino said all his calls and attempts to reach out to the Director and staff were ignored. He said the Director has never met with him even once since the the movie was announced. That the entire production refuses to answer his calls or emails. Not even a polite response. Tomino was blocked. Tomino said he is extremely disappointed with the Director's behavior so far and he doesn't give his blessing to this film. That he doesn't approve.

4. Tomino's words goes viral on Japanese internet. Fans start taking Tomino's side. Some say they won't see the movie if Tomino is treated like that.

5. Soon after Bandai suddenly goes into damage control mode.

6. Jordan is flown out to Japan. Jordan suddenly makes social media posts about choosing to "pay his respects" to Tomino, and that he's choosing to fly out to Japan. (Bandai probably told him to do it.)

7. Jordan meets with Tomino during his visit.

8. 2 to 3 weeks after his trip to Japan and his meeting with Tomino, Jordan is suddenly fired and removed from the movie.
>>
>>23729293
Do you have a vendetta against Netflix or something?
>>
>>23729304
didn't he also get his head beat in at a nightclub in saigon? maybe he should just stay away from asia
>>
>>23729306
What an odd non sequitur. What even lead to you thinking that? If anything them being just the distributor is a good thing, as it would be less money wasted on this garbage fire
>>
>>23729304
Jordan seemed like a very weird guy. None of his video interviews felt genuine or gave me the feeling that he was a real Gundam fan.

>>23729293
Distribution means Netflix is paying tens of millions of dollars upfront to become the exclusive distributor of the Gundam movie. This money goes to the movie budget. Since distributors contribute so much money to the movie, they have some moderate level of say in the story, and can make certain demands. Such as: "We demand XYZ actress be in the movie" or "I want one of the heroes to be black/hispanic/Chinese/etc" or "Cut this scene out. It's too anti-american".

Netflix definitely has leverage in this situation if they want to make some demands. It all comes down to how much money Netflix is paying upfront. More money = more right to make demands.
>>
They couldn't get anyone better for the leads?
>>
>>23729152
I give it a
1% chance of being actually good and a solid entry in the gundam franchise
12% chance of being tolerable and mostly forgettable but not offensively bad in anyway
15% chance of being good if you only focus on the mecha parts
72% chance of being dogshit with zero redeeming qualities

>>
>>23729317
That's not how it works. By that logic, Netflix can dictate what is and isn't in the second Hathaway film because they're getting exclusive streaming rights to that as well. Sunrise/Legendary PAID Netflix to distro the film, not the other way around. Unless Netflix specifically wants exclusivity for titles, companies pay them to host it. Why else do you think Sakamoto Days committee is complaining about Netflix bilking them? They can't say shit for what goes into a film.

>>23729304
None of what you claim to have posted is remotely accurate. Roberts walked away from the project himself because Sunrise didn't want to embrace his "all over the fucking place homage to everything" mentality of geeking out.
>>
The ideal Gundam live action adaptation is basically 1917 but with mobile suits. This won't be it so at best it will be either forgettable or utter dogshit at worst.
>>
>>23729466
>That's not how it works
Yes that's actually how it does work. Especially if it's before the movie is filmed. Netflix can't have total control, but if they are paying 30% of the budget then they do have some say. You may not like Netflix but that's the reality of movie productions.
>>
>>23729152
If Tomino is directly babysitting the production, then I guess we at least won't get the War for Earth 2: non-interactive edition.
>>
>>23729488
Just keep pulling shit out of your ass padre. Show me where they're dictating what's being shown in the Hathaway film, or SEED FREEDOM's future production then since they apparently "paid the big bucks" to host them. Go ahead, we'll wait.

Fucking dumbass cuntmuffin.

>>
>>23729536
All of those were in production before Netflix joined, and none of them were live action. This new movie is live action Gundam and meant for the Western market. That's why we got Sydney Sweeney.
>>
>>23729588
we got Sydney because she's fucking popular in Japan and they need something to appeal to them when this flops stateside, that's all. Netflix has nothing to fucking do with this.

I have no hope for this and the director I have no clue about but he seem middling at best from the reviews of his past works. The original Pacific Rim shows Hollywood can do decent mech albeit Pacific Rim is very different compared to Gundam, but there's been many times more failures and lots of failed live action adaptations of anime.
>>
>>23730451
The director seems to be Jim Mickle, who has done some Netflix shows like the adaptation of Sweettooth, which I didn't watch, last film was in 2019 called In the Shadow of the Moon, which seems to be some crime drama.
Not a filmography that inspires confidence for making a Gundam film.
Pacific Rim worked almost entirely due to Del Toro once he was gone from the franchise, it went to shit.
>>
>>23730451
a live action gundam was bound to happen anyway
>>
>>23730506
Yeah in 1999.
>>
>>23729965
Not that anon but you can find several interviews of Tomino complaining about the movie staff shutting him out and that the Director refuses to meet him. As to whether Tomino got Jordan fired, that's hard to verify. Thats behind the scenes stuff we will never know. So I can't verify what other anon said.

I did find an old Director Fukuda interview. He directed Gundam Seed. Fukuda said the Sunrise President told him that he needs meet Tomino and get his and blessing for making Gundam Seed. That getting Tomino's approval important because gundam fans support Tomino.
>>
Sometimes I worry the movie will attract a new wave of normalfaggots to the franchise and ruin online discussion but then I remember that watching old anime and cel-animation is kryptonite to anime tourists so it probably doesnt matter how the movie turns out. Maybe it will be drawn into the culture war discourse and well get a few more hipsters pretending to be long time fans but thats it.

>netflix
It's going to be dogshit. Netflix demands that pictures it funds have shitty cripts meant for people on their phones. Lots of stating the obvious, reiterating those obvious points, and preventing any sort of nuance because people will miss it while they were scrolling on their phones. They also require that the climate of the film happens immediately because they don't want people jumping to another show. It just results it total dogshit writing that underlies dogshit movies.
