My vote is War in the Pocket for sticking directly to the “war is hell” ethos of First Gundam, being technologically grounded, having likable and well defined characters, a narrative worth telling and told well, interesting and well choreographed fights and god-tier mechanical design.
It really fires on every cylinder a Gundam engine should have.
I don’t think it gets better than WinP, but what do you think?

writing is too contrived for me and characters aren't fleshed out.
I prefer 08th MS, even though writing there is pretty standard cliché too, the comradery of the squad and the reinforcing of newtypes theme is a highlight for me. I hate that every second 08th MSfag who is always some retard who soifaces over Gouf fight and claims the OVA to be 'gritty and realistic'.
