Apparently we got fame of portraying Appul like the one on the left but from all the time I've browsed here I rarely seen her be like that. Like sure zebra jokes are par of the course here but because our greens are Anon x AJ, that means that we genuinely don't see her as racist in any way, no way someone like that would even entertain a green monkey. I've genuinely seen her being portrayed closer to the right than to the left here, minus the AppleDash because obvious reasons.

Well the bats are pests and vermin, it's not really wrong to get rid of those when they are destroying your livelihood, don't think that's really racist, and AJ just wanted Fluttershy to tell them to go, when she had the right to pull a shotgun and just kill em all kek. With cows and sheep now that's weird, and you can tell the show barely wants to touch upon the implications, it's one of those things that started as a cartoon gag but gets weird when you think about it, so yeah fair. Zecora, it's clear the intention but mostly everyone was like that there sans Twi, and once she knew more of her, AJ changed her mind and thought she was alright, ponies are mostly racist in the sense that they distrust or get afraid of something unknown due to ignorance, but AJ specifically is someone that cares more about the strength of character than what they are, she's fair like that.

Joke aside, tons of trees or not, the bats would turn into huge problem if they were left unattended quickly, there was really nothing wrong with trying to send them away, the fact that they rarely appear makes some some sense to why she got so worried, better to be safe and deal with that unexpected shit asap. And AJ asking for help of her magical princess friend is what she does quickly, real character development here, compare how she deals with a problem in S1 to this episode. It was Twi that came up with the idea to change nature and make them not eat apples, which actually worked, the only real drawback was that Fluttershy somehow transformed into a bat and at that point AJ just wanted her friend back and was so happy when things went back to normal that she was willing try Fluttershy's idea. But again, the plan worked and it's not like that's what AJ wanted in the first place, she just wanted to move them away and that's it, she was more violent with the parasprites and tried to kill those with pesticide but no one really cares about bugs anyway.

What makes me annoyed is how there also were a lot of members of the Apple Family that were never used or expanded upon, like the fact that AJ has an Aunt and Uncle that are Oranges and live a whole different lifestyle in Manehattan could have been expanded with an episode and not just for a flashback. Or how they literally reveal that she's half-pear and now there's an entire bloodline she never knew she was part of, doesn't that open up possibilities to meet new ponies and create more stories? Like, what if she's got an Aunt from her mom's side or cousin, wouldn't that be great? To know more ponies that knew of her mom and also gets to bond with the family she never knew she had?

Yea, I always thought it would have been nice to have visiting them be a reason for having an episode in Manehattan instead of it just becoming the 'Rarity has a fashion thing to attend to' city. Like instead of having the friendship map send them there to conduct a play, you could have just had that same story come about naturally from them going to visit Aunt and Uncle Orange.
AJ having so many family members all across Equestria was a great setup for having episodes take place all over, it's just a shame the show didn't take better advantage of it.

Exactly, it's actually a great way to come up with new stories while worldbuilding in a natural way, it's so well designed that it boggles my mind they rarely used it like that and just ended up using a magic map that generates new plots just because. Come to think of it,I remember that Lauren once said that she wanted the show to have more adventures and be a bit more globetrotting around Equestria, so AJ having family all over the world might have been part of that original vision that stuck. That's why the criticism of AJ being too tied to the farm never rang true to me, she's already someone adventurous that's willing to travel far, plus she's got family everywhere

I've been tempted to get into mlp but I'm worried that if I do I will develop an unhealthy obsession with applejack.

Nah, 'southern' characters being stupid and backwards is an archetype you already see everywhere. Having AJ actually be one of the more reasonable, level headed characters is a nice subversion, and helps keep her from just being a shallow stereotype.
