A thread for extreme, abrasive, progressive, or experimental rock-based music.
This means metal, hardcore, experimental rock, noise rock, and others.
Music that is mainstream, "alternative", novelty-driven, "proggy" but not progressive, or not primarily rock, is discouraged.
>Is [genre/band/album] fit for /xxr/?
If you have to ask, probably not.

Cool, thanks. Last thread was a long one, so I wanted to have a thread recap and a chart of albums posted ready before making a new thread.

It lays some of the goth shit on thick, but it's a good album. Very atmospheric.
Apparently it's a concept album. I just listened for the music first, but I'll read lyrics along it another time and see if what they add to it.

desu there was just a part of one of the later tracks that I was surprised I could follow for more than a few seconds. A lot of it is still fairly impenetrable, and I've listened to Master Butchers at least three times in total, and Ebu Gogo I think just once.
>>129159655
With its exclusive focus on bass and drums I can believe it. Ruins is similarly bass-oriented and confusing to metal or regular prog rock ears.

Which are their post-metal albums? I just listened to Sorni Nai because I downloaded it once and forgot until now, and this is too post- for me.
>>
>>129169492
Oh right, Sorni Nai is their best to me lol
I'd say everything Pirut onwards is quite similar in formula. You won't find anything MORE metal than Sorni Nai. They were always more post-rock than metal.
Lumikuuro may be more metal than I remember as it's been a while. I would say their first two, which is Lumikuuro and Tietäjän laulu are when they were less artsy and more metal, but Sorni Nai is probably their "heaviest" from memory. Most albums don't have the same moments with harsh vocals and distorted guitar.
>>
>>
>>129172751
I think the first two albums will have more of that for you, then he started wanting to go more into more typical post-rock or almost like "soundtrack" music at times. I like them all but they're very samey and those first 2 albums are the standouts.

My favorite for this kind of thing is Mizmor
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TH57EBpDDg
Now there's a term specifically for what OP is talking about: "dissonant black metal" or "dissonant death metal." It can refer to newer stuff like Ulcerate, Imperial Triumphant, and Portal, but it's also being applied to bands that have been around for a while, like Deathspell Omega, Blut Aus Nord, and Akhlys.

I only really like Yodh for his work. Every album after seems to wallow way too much in being slow and repetitive and while atmospheric it often starts to get a bit boring. The 2025 album in particular was a total snoozefest for me.

looking for something more like Exystence or similar curated blog sites with direct downloads. I get the feeling that the format makes it easier to find obscure and new things that you wouldn't usually seek out or even find on the more spammy websites that just upload whatever they can get their hands on.
15 years ago blogspot was the place to be for that kind of thing, but a lot of the high quality blogs just kinda died on their ass, with the zippy death and what not.
>>
>>129178989
I use getmetal.club a fair bit, although its not a blog and has lots of shit that definitely isnt metal, or even mainstream trash, but it's at least a steady stream of "random albums someone decided to upload" and that will often include prog stuff.
>>

>15 years ago blogspot was the place to be for that kind of thing, but a lot of the high quality blogs just kinda died on their ass, with the zippy death and what not.
Agreed. The only blogs that stuck around that I know/use are metal related. Like mortuusinsomnis06.
This is mostly just metal though, and not very experimental all the time, but he does have a lot of uploads so there will be some in there.

Seconding that one, always comes up handy when I'm googling random shite I can't find anywhere else.

There's a few I check from time to time when looking for albums but they either used zippyshare or some have been bastards and locked their files behind "you need to be premium".
Ironically enough I use 88nsm to get shit like the new Peste Noires and the fucker has ironically paywalled it - or the one that wasn't only contained one track and the rest were missing.

Glad I found this. Discordant technical death metal that balances brutality and alienness well.
One guy plays both a saxophone and clarinet of all things, though neither are used very much, and not in the obnoxious way some gimmick acts do.

Don't put in too much effort mate, I did a cursory glance and found nothing, so I was just checking if you had one to hand. No need to do my work for me if you don't have it.
Interestingly that bandcamp also recommended this Diskord release which I remember being decent for similar reasons of being largely coherent despite the genre. It doens't go crazy with sax etc, but if I remember rightly it really fucking loves throwing in cowbells. Almost to the point of actually overusing it and being silly.

Instrumental and mostly acoustic prog/experimental rock (some sites also call it math rock or post-rock) with hammered dulcimer, accordion, cello, and timpani, in addition to guitars and bass.
Two of the band members (Hauppa, Becker) would each later form or join metal bands Ara, Acanthrophis, Northless, and Deorbit.

I agree although I wasn't hugely enamoured with Kaevum like same are. I just found them "decent" or "great" at times.
Given Nordvrede was just Kaevum-lite I assume that anything those members of the band do after this will still have similar vibes.
Really they need to get Nordmann on a schizo DSBM album.
huh googled nordmann's name to make sure I got the right one, according to plebbit:
>Ukjent Soldat I aka Nordmann was engaged to a woman who left him for a Jewish man which is what started his whole “pride” in the first place.
Quite amusing if so.

He already did I think. I got a bandcamp notification saying "new message from serpent column: to address some of the criticism..." and then I went to look at it like 20 minutes later and the message was gone without a trace. Just a coincidence I'm sure. Everytime I've checked the message since there's been no message to see, almost like it was deleted out of shame or something.
At this point I'm almost certain he lurks /mu/ as all of his spergouts seem to coincide with people here shitting on his latest output. Minutes later comes the essaypost where he loses it over fucking nothing.
I'll take AI covers if the music on it isn't also mediocre as fuck. And yknow, at least make the AI image of pylons over a river (a very difficult thing to get a picture of I'm sure) not have the pylon wires fucking phase in and out of existence.

Fun EP though. They teased an upcoming full-length in the booklet, which makes me wonder what songs they were working on before parting to do different things.
>>
>>129216437
To be honest if you're going to use programmed drums, ideally it would be done by a drummer.
Too often I hear programmed drums where even if they don't sound too fake you can tell it's just someone who has no idea how to compose good drums.

>How are Bell Witch's albums btw?
Depends what you like. I like most of their releases but I personally think Longing is their best album but the production lets it down a bit. Four Phantoms is close to the same songwriting with way heavier and chunkier production.
Everything after tends to be a lot more dull in my opinion, very drawn out and trying to paint a scene that doesn't really work for me. People liked Mirror Reaper, but my personal take was "it gets really good at the 50 minute mark" which isnt much of a compliment for a one track album that's 80 minutes long. The Stygian Bow collabs at least introduce new sounds but don't really go anywhere with it for me and remain kinda dull.

It's probably just meant to be an entrylevel way into the genre, with just some easy essentials rather than diving into every good band, at least that's how I assume those /mu/ charts go. Hence having Black Flag 3 times.
Whenever I make a chart I just try to do one album per artist but I dunno if that's always smart.

>Articles Of Faith
I was going to mention them after posting the chart, as I fucking love AoF, but anon wanted recs for big name bands he missed, and I don't have the punk/hxc native's experience to know if Articles were big at the time or had just gathered a high status long after the fact due to the internet. (For example, it would be ridiculous to call Timeghoul a big-name band for their time.)
>Siege
Also cool, I would have put the Drop Dead compilation on the chart if it were me. Though I see how Siege were less hardcore punk in conventional terms and more an intense thrashcore or proto-grindcore band.
>>129237990
Yeah it looks like it's intended for newbies, and that's fine.
>Hence having Black Flag 3 times.

I usually do that, but some bands change considerably, like Black Flag did between Damaged and My War, so I get why the chart maker put both.

I mean who wants to be associated with the majority of dreckcore? I feel the recent beatdeath bands are both more DM and more HC than the 2000s style of deathcore, if that's possible, and especially the techy deathcore made now.
