Her first two albums, especially The Echo, have a certain innocence to them that would be lost by the time she went commercial on Now That the Light Is Fading. The whole album is a farewell to adolescence and the anxiety of entering adulthood, but what distinguishes it is its strong emotional centerpiece on the closing track "Satellite" which she wrote at age 17. The song is a slow ballad about yearning to be free yet seen that crescendos at its lyrical climax, and damn, do those closing lyrics hit hard:
>So send me out to space and cut me free
>And like a satellite, just look for me
Blood Ballet would continue much of those themes, although instead of mourning adolescence, these would confront the first steps of adulthood. The lyrics here, while deeply emotional, are much rawer and unleashed without being scornful. While lacking a strong emotional centerpiece, the album still features lovely tunes like the homage to her high school boyfriend "James" who also happened to play trumpet on "Satellite".
For me, these would be the highlights of her early work. What do you say, /mu/?

I have other genres of music I like. /trad/ is rapidly becoming my absolute favorite general thread on /mu/, but this isn't about that.
Do you have any thoughts on what I just posted or are you just gonna seethe at me?

The Notes from the Archive exclusive tracks are also worth listening to. Understandable why she shelved them only to release them later. This likely wouldn't have impressed Pharrell but still is compelling on their own:

Well, do you have any thoughts on the songs shared in the OP? I've said what I wanted to say. Perhaps others have their own take on them. "A Love Letter" is another solid track found in The Echo. It's not on YouTube but you'll find it on the Bandcamp page.

Well, that's certainly quite shallow. This thread isn't for those people.
You're telling me you couldn't be bothered to be moved by one of her songs? If "Satellite" doesn't stir you, I'll pray you find your soul.
>>
>>129173554
I just don't care about that type of music. Generic girl wailing over slow cords is not interesting. They are all interchangeable in lyrics and music. All of them sound the same. That Satellite one is so generic I couldn't pay attention for more than 20 seconds.

Of Maggie's major label work, Surrender stands out as her magnum opus. This album was also the concept behind her Master's thesis at Harvard Divinity School which even her fans on Reddit found too pretentious. Even so, I strain to think of a more human album in the 2020s on account of its utter sincerity. No emotion here is performed for its own sake and each tracks bleeds with raw feelings. If "Anywhere With You" doesn't bring tears to your eyes, I pray you find your soul:

Someone asked me if I could pass the Plinkett test. I think I could.
>Describe your favorite musician without saying what they look like, what kind of clothes or costume they wear, what instruments they play, their vocal range, what genre of music they make, how famous they are, who they dated, fought with, or were "canceled" by and what awards, records, or chart positions they have. Describe them to your friends like they ain't ever heard them before.
Maggie is painfully earnest and adorably sincere. Her music can be painful, sexual, sensual, melancholic, joyful, idealistic, anxious, smug and cringeworthy but it is never artificial or cheap. All her albums follow consistent themes and emotions that almost feel like concept albums without technically being so. At her top form, she rarely fills space for its own sake, and every song flows seamlessly into the next without issue. At the end, I'm left longing for fulfilled permanence and reproductive love with the woman worth committing to.
As a guy who spent much of his time listening to aggressive music celebrating triumph and devastation, I'm left feeling alive every time I listen to her.

"Split Stones" isn't half bad either:
https://youtu.be/IHi5jq2P_Zk
Small anecdote, my gym's dance instructor had "Light On" in the DJ mix blaring loudly enough to be heard from above. The chorus was sadly sandwiched between two choruses from other artists, including a Rap, which ruined the chorus, but it was still nice to hear it out in the wild.
>>
>>129168740
Apart from "Light On" and "Fallingwater", I really don't care much for Heard It in a Past Life despite all the hype "Alaska" received. Same issue I have with Now That the Light Is Fading. Only really care for "Dog Days" from that EP.
Guess I'm not a Pop guy at all.

A bunch of reviews I've seen. For whatever reason, everyone loves Don't Forget Me, but apart from the title track and "The Kill" that album was cruelly forgettable or memorable for the wrong reasons. Looking at you, "So Sick of Dreaming". Anyway, some food for thought:

Part of it is, indeed, my own fault. Pre-trip, I'd be abrasive and hurl unsolicited critiques at other female musicians namely Chappell Roan, Halsey and Grimes. That I also have loudly pronounced contempt for Pop music galvanized others.
On the other hand, only a handful of anti-Maggies could articulate why they dislike her. One called her an apple polisher on par with Rory Gilmore and called attention to her pop psych weltanschauung and TED Talk diction. That, to me, is the most substantive critique leveled at her.

"Embers"
Fight or flight, I choose to run
Composure instantly undone
I catch my breath, but it's too small
I breathe again, I breathe in all
And everything we ever shared
I stand with all my secrets bared
But walk alone into the night
For you were all, the greatest light
Though the fire has died
And the ash, it subsides
The embers stay burning for you
Clocks they always seem to lie
On minute hands you can't rely
But heartbeats always tell the truth
They race at just the thought of you
The same way that they always have
Shy of hopeful, never sad
But always wondering, always afraid
That you forgot just what we made
Though the fire has died
And the ash, it subsides
The embers stay burning for you
And if they die, I'll still remember
If they die, I'll still remember
If they die, I'll still remember you
Though the fire has died
And the ash, it subsides
The embers stay burning for you
-
"Deep In The Earth"
Excuse me for a minute
'Cause this won't be brief
I've been hiding these words
Under my tongue, protected
By the walls of my yellow-stained teeth
They've festered and broken
And they've rearranged
They've misspelled themselves
And now they're leaking out of my
Brain
They say ashes to ashes
And dust to dust
But my heart's made of metal
And the clasp's rusted shut
'Cause you left it out in the
Rain
But if these are the last breaths
I'm breathing on earth
Then I pray to God
You remember me when
My body is deep in the earth
(Whoa, Whoa)
My back's ached for years
Carrying my heavy heart
It beats itself silly
And pounds through the dark
Sustaining the life that lives within
And yet was so desperate
To beat in time
It rang in your rhythm
And mimicked your
Rhyme
You can't blame it for trying
Or clinging to love
But love's left my soul
And I've forgotten love
And what's left is your smoky silhouette
But if these are the last breaths
I'm breathing on earth
Then I pray to God
You remember me
When my body is deep in the earth
>>
"Creatures"
Well I've lived a short life
Not a lot of things that I've seen
But in that short life
A lot of things that I've been
I've been a daughter
And a sister too
I've been in trouble
And I've been in love with you
And we are all just creatures, baby
Fumbling towards the light
And I'm crawling on my knees now, baby
Won't you make my heart alright?
Won't you make my heart alright?
Well there is an old house
That I think about sometimes
With creaky floorboards
And height marks of a outgrown child
And it burnt down sometime ago
Or so it would seem
And I still see it's dying colors
In the autumn leaves
And we are all just creatures, baby
Longing to be free
And if we're all just creatures, baby
Won't you give my heart to me?
Won't you give your heart to me?
Well used to swim the river
Once or twice every year
But I found out that the river
It was often insincere
So now I dip my toes in
Still hoping to get wet
But without my whole body
My fate, it has been set
And we are all just creatures, baby
Grounded by our fear
And if you're scared of love, now baby
You'll know only loneliness and tears
Only loneliness and tears
And I may only be a creature
But I'm still fumbling towards the light
-
"Wolves"
In the morning
I'll be waking
I'll be rising with the sun
I'll be gearing for the road
To leave this world
And run
I'm no longer speaking
'Cause the perfect words
I always lacked
In the morning
I'll be running
And never coming back
I'm not waiting
For the wolves to take my body
I'm not waiting for the wolves
I'm not waiting
For the wolves to rip my heart out
I'm not waiting for the wolves
In the evening
I'll be resting
Warmed by the autumn harvest moon
I'll be curing
My disease
'Cause to you I'm now immune
Searching
For a reason
'Cause one never did appear
In the evening
I'll be resting
Dreaming of another year
I'm not waiting
For the wolves to take my body
I'm not waiting for the wolves
>>
"By Morning"
The forest is dark
And I'm wide awake
Not sleeping
The road to my heart
Is stark
But I'm alive
Which way would you run
If you were looking
Through my glass eyes?
Or would your clean skin
Leave you
Paralyzed?
And baby
I was born
To daylight
With twilight
Tangled in
The sky
And as I
Escape
And take flight
I am running free
Of all those
Tangled wires
And I'll be home
By morning
And the morning light
Will warm
My tired bones
I'll run
Through the trees
And through the forest
And in morning
By morning
I'll be home
-
"A Love Letter"
Dear old tree in my front yard
Thank you for your shade
Your leaves are speckled with streaming rays of sun
And I love the rustling noise they make
The swing on your branch
Is my favorite spot
And I'm sorry for the steps we nailed
Into your bark
I'll love you forever
Yes, I'll love you still
I'll love you more than any man
Oh, I promise that I will
Dear old chickens that wander through my yard
Thank you for the eggs that you have laid
Oh their blue/green shells are speckled with dirt
But I love the cracking sound they make
While chasing you is something
I admit I've done a lot
I could never steam or fry you
Or put you in a pot
Yes, I'll love you forever
Yes, I'll love you still
Oh, I'll love you more than any man
Oh, I promise that I will
Dear old house that I grew up in
I miss you when I'm gone
The dog hair on my sofa
And the light through my window at dawn
While I know at times it seems that I am
Far away
I'll be home for thanksgiving
And on christmas day
Yes, I'll love you forever
Yes, I'll love you still
Oh, I'll love you more than any man
Oh, forever I will
>>
"Kids Like Us"
And I'll turn eighteen on a Sunday
And it'll be the day I've waited for
Mom will bake cake and there'll be presents
Like there always was before
But if time keeps moving just like this
Then it won't be soon before I'm old
And they will all be wishing they could just be kids like us
And they will all be wishing they could just be kids like us
But I'm getting older with each day
And soon I'll be wishing too
And on the eve of my fifth birthday
When my father found me in tears
And I've always been fearless
But scared of oncoming years
And he tried to make it alright
And he told me not to cry
And they will all be wishing they could just be kids like us
And they will all be wishing they could just be kids like us
But I'm getting older with each day
And soon I'll be wishing too
It's easy to remember
When everything was calm
Two hands on the bike I rode
Just me and my mom
But I haven't rode in a long while
Now we drive most of the time
And they will all be wishing they could just be kids like us
And they will all be wishing they could just be kids like us
But I'm getting older with each day
And soon I'll be wishing too
And soon I'll be wishing too
-
"Satellite"
Steady as a rock
I stand, I wait
With eyes that see
But eyes that can't erase
And hands that hold
But hands that can't embrace
A creature longing for some saving grace
Oh and I have long since
Seen the sun
It set along the banks
When I was young
Oh, and it's been long
Since you've been near
But fate was never kind to us, my dear
So send me out to space
And cut me free
And like a satellite
Just look for me
Oh and if there's darkness
In your sight
I'll be in the corner of the night
We live
We grow
We die
It snows
The ro
Tation
The earth
The sun
We write
We read
We love
We need
We need
We need
We need
I need
I need
I need
I need
I need
So send me into space
And cut me free
And like a satellite
Just look for me

"Resonant Body"
I'm a resonant body
With knuckles and lungs
Beat me with cymbals
Play chords on my tongue
I'm a resonant body
With elbows and toes
Drum on my rib cage
Release my dissonant tones
I'm a resonant body
Trace it along my skin
In the freckles and old scars
And the lines I have hid
In a resonant body
All the frequencies hold like
Dirty feet on carpet
Your breath in the cold
Warm breath in the cold
I'm sorry for our miscommunication
And force fed sympathies
I'll rest in the garden
With roots, oh and the reeds
Safe from human frequencies
I'm a resonant body
With elbows and toes
Drum on my rib cage
Release my dissonant tones
-
"James"
"Too young, too thoughtless," I said to myself
With realistic visions all perched on the shelf
'Cause I'm still hoping, waiting for you to come home
May your snow capped mountains carry you far
May they stand as protectors wherever you are
May you stay safe and happy all of your days
Oh James
Oh James
Maybe you're in love or hung up on another
Maybe you found a far prettier lover
Maybe you'll paint her a picture like you did for me
You color your world with that Neverland smile
But it goes dark in pieces every once in a while
And on my birthday I told you, "Don't worry, there'll be other days"
Oh James
Oh James
I'll always be happy if you choose to call
Or write me a letter saying all that you saw and
How things have changed since our days there on Noxontown Pond
No don't be a stranger, no don't go too far
And though you love places that have lots of stars
Just know in the city, you'll always have a place to stay
Oh James
Oh James
>>
"Drift"
Won't you tread lightly 'cause the house is sleeping
Won't you tread lightly down the stairs
Will you leave my lonely when the sun is creeping
Up from the horizon over there
Won't you tread lightly the floorboards are creaking
Won't you tread lightly when you're gone
Will you leave me lonely when the day is breaking
Will you leave me lonely in the dawn
Keep me in your prayers when you are wandering
Keep me forever on your lips
Keep me in your thoughts when winter's knocking
Hold me when the snow begins to drift
Won't you stay a while and we could sleep in
Won't you stay a while and warm my skin
But I know you're headed for another lifetime
Be another til you're back again
Keep me in your prayers when you are wandering
Keep me forever on your lips
Keep me in your thoughts when winter's knocking
Hold me when the snow begins to drift
-
"Blood Ballet"
Say it's not so
Say your heart it wrote me letters all the time
Say it sealed them up and with your breath did sign
Them all away
Say that your notes
They were no forgery, you meant them every line
Some in meter, some in verse, and some in rhyme
Tell me you meant every word
You could cut my knees and leave me at the door
I'd still pick all your memories off our dusty floor
If you'd stay
If you'd stay
Darling, just a little while
Darling, just a little while
Darling, just a little while
Tell me how you are
And I'll write a song for every feeling I can't name
Like we were dancing in a fucking blood ballet
It was a massacre
How'd you get away?
'Cause oh, good heavens we abided by the night
But there are darker things than the absence of light
And they still creak through our halls
I would build a city out of you and me
There would be crime, but still a local grocery
If you'd stay
If you'd stay
Darling, just a little while
Darling, just a little while
Darling, just a little while
A little while
A little while
A little while
Darling, just a little while
>>
"Little Joys"
Bonfire of awe and a thirst was burning
Heart like a house, the floorboards were turning
Dark river beds where slumber was decay
The light it wrapped you in its flame
The only heir of the breaking day
Made words an arrow only you could aim
With no injury to claim
I'm a big mess of little joys
My blue eyes are wrapped in grey
I'm a big mess of little joys
I loved you once, but none to blame
A foggy peak in the august rain
A humid heat that would never dissipate
The wind it hunted our stray calls
Combined with dragging from the hull
But that was then when you gripped tight on me
With no injury to claim
I'm a big mess of little joys
My blue eyes are wrapped in grey
I'm a big mess of little joys
Lunar, solar, thought that things were over
Midnight, twilight, thought that things were alright
Don't you take my heart away
I'm a big mess of little joys
-
"Good Heart"
You told me, "Darling, don't you worry oh my dear"
But my mind it worries much to much I do fear
Sick of a march made of patterns and circles in time
Bravery sprung from cacophonous calls of our crimes
I told you, "Darling, don't you dare come so near"
Prompted by lungs seeking hydrogen, oxygen clear, but
Weave me a thread from your chest and a spindle from spine
Tapestry hung from a delicate frame in our minds
But you had a good heart
>>
"Anybody"
Everybody's waiting
For their one and only
Their now and always
And Everybody's waiting
For their feet to lead them
Heart beats to seize them
But what's running through my veins
Makes me just the same as everybody
I might be saying this in vain
But I'm looking for my anybody
People have always told us
That the silence heeds us
The night decrees us
But I believe that silence
Is all there is to
What's underneath us
And if you're staring at my bones
They are all the stories I embody
And you've got stories of your own
Tell me will you be my anybody
And I am asking so someday
When I get older
That I will be able to say
That I am not alone
Be my anybody
Be my anybody
But til then I'll be waiting
No, not by myself, but with everybody
'Cause hidden in the silence
Is my one and only anybody
-
"On The Page"
Follow
The flight of the north moving birds
Steady
The echo, the great moving herd
They fly through the night
Fill their wings and their sights
With cold air and pale shadowed moons
Oh lover, kid you not
Though we promised a lot
I must fly from you
So hold me
Sing me to sleep
On the crest of a late breaking wave
And write me
Into your thoughts
I'll be safe with the words on the page
Shadow
The light plays its own little games
Dream world
Its own silent claim to remain
And it'll follow you still
Through the streams and the hills
And remnants of gold autumn leaves
Oh lover, you can walk
But your shadow still stalks
From between the trees
So hold me
Sing me to sleep
On the crest of a late breaking wave
And write me
Into your thoughts
I'll be safe with the words on the page
>>
"Symmetry"
We don't have to talk
Leave your words in the city with your heavy thoughts
We don't have to shout
Oh, I wish that you would just let me out
We don't have to shiver
Like we did back then
We don't have to quiver
Or remember when
I am soaked in symmetry
Beating on the axis of symmetry
Soaked in symmetry
-
"Drift Demo"

Well, there's The Echo which is a full on Folk/Folk Rock album. The songs not on YouTube are on Bandcamp.
My absolute favorite cut off that is "Satellite" but that's more Chamber Folk than straight up Folk. The more Folk songs are Wolves, Embers, Deep in the Earth, Creatures and A Love Letter.
On Blood Ballet, the Folk songs there are the title track (don't really like this one), James (my favorite), Little Joys (my second favorite), Drift, Resonant Body, Good Heart, On the Page and Anybody
My top 10 Maggie Folk songs would be:
1. Satellite
2. Wolves
3. James
4. Little Joys
5. Embers
6. Deep in the Earth
7. Anybody
8. Resonant Body
9. Creatures
10. A Love Letter

Walked in straight away and slammed the door last night
I caught you on the couch, you were having a fright
All alone, with the TV on
Clothes strewn on the floor, I got down on my knees
You told me everything that you wanted to be
All along, was it wrong?
And I said
Listen, oh, I know it's been a long, long year
But I think we should go and get you outta here
I'll go anywhere, anywhere with you
Pack up all your shit and put it in the back
Maybe the miles can make up for the things you lack
I'll go anywhere, anywhere with you
Cruising 95 like we got nothing to lose
I'm praying to the headlights like I prayed to you
Before I found you
Roll the windows down, kill the radio
I'd rather hear the wind than hear that song I'm supposed to know
By some fucking bro
You tell me that forever couldn't come too soon
I wanna lose my mind in a hotel room with you
Anywhere would do
I'm sitting in the bath like it's pouring rain
You call me from the hall just to say my, say my name
I'll go anywhere with you
I'll go anywhere with you
Anywhere with you
Anywhere with you
I'll go anywhere with you
Would you tell me if I ever started holding you back?
Would you talk me off the guard rail of my panic attack?
Look me straight in my center and tell me from the heart
Are you ready to start? Are you ready to start?
Are you ready to start? Are you ready to start?
Are you ready to start?
You tell me that forever couldn't come too soon
If I'm gonna lose my mind, I'm gonna lose it with you
You tell me you want everything, you want it fast
But all I've ever wanted is to make something fucking last
I'll go anywhere, I'll go anywhere, I'll go anywhere with you
Anywhere with you
Anywhere with you
Anywhere with you

In fairness, I'm not blameless. Pre-trip, I was known to be quite combative and would bait others. Her look is an acquired taste, but I refuse to call her ugly. Others did which irked me. At the end of last year, someone took it upon himself to impersonate me and make asteistic threads about her where the OP would deliberately overpraise her looks and skills to elicit harsh responses from anons. From that point on, I now use a trip to distinguish myself from that anon. If you see any Maggie Rogers threads made by other anons laying on the praise thicker than reasonable, it isn't by me.

>Never listened to that interview in full
Yeah, don't bother. Two of the most insufferable people on the planet gassing each other up. The ending segment in which they were sharing lyric fragments from their Notes apps had me reconsidering Stalinism.
>>
>>129271076
Good Lord. From the 30 minutes Turboscribe did for free, it seems they were mostly talking shop but I imagine it gets much worse as the interview goes on. A full listen might make for quite the endurance test.
I forgive her bougieness.
>>
>>129271076
Holy shit, I skimmed around to the very end and she's got a couple howlers. Her new album is going to be about self-discovery, sadness and sex, and one particular lyric fragment reads like an ode to masturbation. This is either going to be trash or a glorious trainwreck you enjoy ironically. God willing, she'll have some taste and discretion to reel it in and flesh out the concept more but part of me has a bad feeling about this.
One thing I got from that interview is she isn't particularly hungry. She claims she's not striving to write hits and instead is just making music that feels right. It's the sort of humblebragging too many people engage in but it reveals that she knows she's uncompetitive.
>>
>>129272729
I especially like Maggie immediately shooting down the only half-decent line in the entire exchange (the one about a city boy with a cowboy hat).
>One thing I got from that interview is she isn't particularly hungry. She claims she's not striving to write hits and instead is just making music that feels right. It's the sort of humblebragging too many people engage in but it reveals that she knows she's uncompetitive.
I think she's canny enough to realize that, in retrospect, the "touched by the hand of Pharrell" boost was fumbled, bigly. (If not, her label has surely informed her.) Most people don't even dare to dream of such a thing happening to them, but she's been downplaying it in every subsequent soundbite, how she wasn't ready, how it shouldn't define her, etc.
By the time her debut LP appeared the moment (musically and culturally) had long passed, and the great public had little appetite for Maggie Rogers. Ironically, not pulling out all the stops and capitalizing on the Pharrell thing might have doomed her to becoming "the Pharrell chick" in people's minds!
She clearly thought the second album was going to make a way bigger splash than it eventually did, reintroducing herself as a big city baddie and all that shite. A last throw of the dice, but it's safe to say Surrender came up snake eyes.
I'm not surprised that venture sapped her of game and found her crawling towards the sign flashing Adult Contemporary. Like she said in the video she's in a comfortable place (when was she ever not?), but she must wonder sometimes: what might have been...
...which of course leads us into: *could* she have been? She's had three records with solid-to-shameless major label backing and still hasn't shown a hint of character. I don't doubt her passion for music, but, you know, there are people whose hearts burn like stars every Saturday karaoke night.

She has openly admitted this on the commentary track from Notes from the Archives:
>It's important to note that both The Echo, my first record, and Blood Ballet, my second record, lived on streaming services. These songs were out in the world. They were on Spotify. They were on Bandcamp where they still live. They came out as I was making them, but when I was graduating from college I had a double major in Music Production and in English, and I was working as a journalist and I thought I was going to be applying for jobs as a music journalist and I thought that if I had music out on streaming services it could hurt my credentials and hurt my objectivity for an editor's point of view. So, I went onto CD Baby or whatever the site was that I had independently distributed them through and I applied for all the songs to come down
>Some background on independent distributors is this music doesn't come down immediately. There is a sort of lag time where they process your request and eventually the music will come off the internet. Two days after I applied for this music to come down the video of me and Pharrell Williams at NYU went viral and suddenly I had five songs in the Viral Top 50 from these old records and then they just went inactive [laughs] and they just completely disappeared off the internet. So, I was on the phone with this company being like, "You have to get them back! Like, I can't do it." And it didn't work and so I sort of out of nowhere was given this blank slate. I was gonna get this shot at a career in music that I had always wanted, but it sort of looked different that I thought
>>
>>129273036
>it's safe to say Surrender came up snake eyes.
A bit of a shame because that album, if you ask me, is her magnum opus. I genuinely like that album and is my favorite Pop album of the 2020s. Discovering it in the right place and time (my gym) likely influenced my affinity for it especially after enduring the absolute slop Zoom Media plays regularly. "Want Want" felt very real in a miasmic stew of substandard slop;.
>>
>>129273152
Yeah, but that Joan Baez shit wasn't ever gonna cut it. I meant more in the sense of kicking Shellback out of whatever crack den he's hiding in and putting him on the red eye to JFK because there's a record to be made now now now.
Maggie's "shot" dripped out of the barrel, like in a bad dream.

>Maggie's "shot" dripped out of the barrel
A cruel case of a missed opportunity, huh?
I take it you're the anon who compared her diction to a TED Talk and her whole weltanschauung being poorly imitated pop psychology. If you ask me, she's the ultimate example of a bougie prodigy who stumbled into the big leagues without ever intending it. Perhaps it's my own bias talking, but there's a certain purity to her that lights me right up. As mentioned, discovering her at my gym contextualizes my reaction to her music. Had I discovered her anywhere else, I'd probably be cold and distant.
I've given my opinions on Don't Forget Me which, if you ask me, is the definition of a missed opportunity on account of the concept being undercooked.

If MR and Capitol really have gone their separate ways, then the whole "written and recorded in a week" spiel sounds less like a creative hot streak and more like getting that last contractual obligation out of the way as quickly and painlessly as possible, with Rogers the consummate pro playing ball. Picrel, basically.
>>
>>129273671
Could very well be which is why the record feels too relaxed. Funnily enough, the critics ate it up which shocked me. For whatever you want to say about Surrender and even her own subreddit roasted the Harvard Divinity thesis tie-in, that album was very deliberately crafted and only a couple songs waste time. If your assessment is accurate, then that would explain why her last album felt so lackluster. She could have just been fulfilling the contractual obligation.
Anyway, we'll see what 2026 generates. She's already making the rounds with her colleagues in entertainment although it's curious that very few shout her out. She's also been sounding off on social media about ICE, so she'll undoubtedly chime in during the midterms. She namedrops all these big names in interviews including Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan, but I'm not aware of any who return the favor.

What's revealing is that her recent appearance at We Are Moving the Needle's Resonator Award show where she performed a live tribute to Chaka Khan saw exactly one clip and one photo of her amid a sea of other candids from bigger names including Dave Grohl, Olivia Rodrigo and this year's winner Chappell Roan. To perform live and have under 5 pieces of media currently surfacing is damning.

From the looks it, We Are Moving the Needle's media release will probably be gradual as this was just a by industry-heads-for-industry-heads award show. The fact organizers chose not to livestream any of the event reveals an intentional aversion to virality. She has appeared in two more photos, one by herself and one with Emily B. Lazar, but still only one clip of her performance. No statements, no interviews or anything else. Since Chappell was receiving the award, she obviously was going to command much of ceremony's spotlight, and in fairness, others have thus far had no in-depth interview. Either way, she's just being in the room at the moment.
