There's a misconception in the US that your ideology has to either 1:1 match the Democratic Party's platform or the Republican Party's platform, and if you don't agree on every point then you're an enemy. I also think it's intentional/encouraged because it's easier to force people to accept views they disagree with (and vote for candidates who don't represent them) if you require them to fully agree with a prescribed set of beliefs instead of allowing them to form their own beliefs.

For example you can be okay with gay marriage but against open borders - both are pretty tame, reasonable beliefs individually, and neither conflicts with the other, but for some reason holding both at the same time gets you rejected by the left and the right. And that's not centrism/fence-sitting either - you can just hold two non-conflicting beliefs at the same time that happen to be left-leaning and right-leaning respectively, it's not the same as refusing to take a side.
