Styles that depend on mystery, i.e. people really believing that you have something to do with lumberjacks or whatever these guys were trying to cosplay as, can't survive today's internet, because it's far more heterogeneous, and everyone is much more online including the artists. It's not possible to hide, it's easier than ever to get completely figured out and mocked to hell and back if you deserve it, sometimes even if you don't, in either case it's impossible for artists who operates solely on vibes to survive this treatment.

This was every single person in the indie band scene in my city circa 2005-2015 or so. Some real pretentious twats but it was still better than today.
Tame Impala had some decent stuff, same with Spoon and Wilco. The rest of those bands were pretty dumb and just trendy tryhards.
I remember a trend at the time where every local band would have a girl, they would usually play bass.

I stopped by one of the old local music venues for a drink and the bands were all keyboard and synth pop trying to sound futuristic. There was a fat hogbeast wearing too much colourful makeup singing in a mumu. All the guys looked really sad and weak. Nobody even plays guitar anymore, if they do it’s really soft and minimal. Never any distortion or solos. Times change but it’s weird out there

Also this guy didn't exist (I don't mean Devendra Banhart) because every guy that was even slightly like this was also inserting plenty of rap and some older shit into the list, no doubt a few "hidden gems" you're not supposed to have heard of also.
This is a blatantly anti-white satire of Pitchfork readers for being into exciting new (and newish) white people music in ~2012. Memes like this were made to justify the mutation of poptimism into 2010s nigger worship cultural behemoth. Indie was just too painfully... white!

>Most of those names are trash in musical terms.
It's not 2012 anymore, you don't need to be this combative. It's fine to admit some of them were just 'overrated'. Yes it was frustrating to have arena rock Arcade Fire presented as the peak of musical art by very serious critics. But looking back from calmer detached 2026 perspective I cannot seriously say they were "trash". And their very bad influence, what many of us were most sore about, wasn't actually their fault. You can't choose what worse bands after you are going to do with the ideas they get from your music.
Maybe it was useful to say they were trash at the time, but that battle is over.

It’s good music, they might not all have been the best records out there but the concerts were always a good time. The shitty part of the year of Lord 2026 is that all the performative music taste has become utterly malformed by internet culture. You’re in the out group for not appreciating niche pop and rap stars that come out of nowhere.

I like half the artists listed and we exist we're just old and out of fashion. Like when I saw Destroyer last year I was one of the younger people in the room and I'm in my early 30s. That said it wouldn't surprise me if in a few years gen alpha kids get really into this era of indie like how zoomers got into nu metal, pop punk and britpop.

I like his music, especially when I'm working, but honestly I dislike anything related to anime/video games/superheroes/"reddit culture". I never had that as a kid and I find it it all joyless and idiotic as an adult.

>You shouldn't listen to this artist because we 4chin chuds just arbitrarily associated him with numales and reddit things!
You are a sheep, I will keep listening to the tasteful crunchy ambient/noise of mr Ledesma, tyvm
