A few years ago people starting referring to certain China wheelsets as not just "the best Chinese wheels" or "the best budget wheels" but simply "the best wheels". This year, Winspace released the T1600, a CDM (Chinese Domestic Market) product that costs more than a Madone or a Tarmac. It's UCI approved right out of the box (though you may need to tape some lead weights to it to get it to pass the weight restrictions). Western buyers need not apply, though they no doubt will try.
Western brands were folding right and left before the iron curtain 2.0 was raised, now the "tiro de gracia" has been fired and big companies like Trek are going to go bankrupt because their supply chains have been cut off by Import Substitution Industrialization, a popular third world development tactic pioneered by visionaries like Pinochet and Galtieri.
Is this the end of the western bike era? Will tomorrow's dentists settle for nothing less than Chinese bikes on 100% Chinese groupsets?

did some research, Winspace, Ican and Magene still does them. I didn't get your joke though, I just like rim brakes because I'm used to them and my rim brake frame is nowhere near outdated or past it (2016)

The point is rim brakes + carbon is an inherently compromised setup. If I were to buy a rim brake bike in 2011+14, I'd say fuck aerodynamics, throw some HED alloy rims on it, and call it a day. rimbrake bikes are for aesthetics not performance or comfort

is touring a fair weather affair? I wouldn't know, I am a "just commuter" (regardless of the weather) as well as a hobby fred who isn't afraid of a little water, hence my subjective personal preference for being able to stop (I believe in the yuro racing scene they say "but brakes aren't for stopping, tulio said they're for modulating your pace in the peloton")

I've been riding on carbon wheels with rim brakes for half a decade and have never found myself unable to brake in the rain. you just have to anticipate more which is something any retard can do. you're just nitpicking. enjoy your disc brakes man, your fat body sure needs more braking power

Anyone seen that Tom Ritchey rant about how disk brakes and 1 1/8 headtubes destroyed cycling?
He makes some very interesting points, mainly about balance but also about feel, they way a narrower headtube with a symmetrical fork and rim braking system gives the rider feedback that is completely lost once you need to reinforce one fork leg to mount disk brakes and enlarge the headtube.
Of course he's also speaking mainly about metal bikes, rather than the soulless plastic slop we see today.

I love metal bikes and metal stuff, and I love carbon bikes and carbon stuff. I just love bikes. I just think it's dumb when people claim to be defending tradition by riding carbon fiber rim brakes, it's awfully convenient how "tradition" happens to perfectly coincide with whatever year the bike they happen to ride was released on the market and anything older than that is crap and anything newer than that is just marketing for fools and their dentist money

I will never install carbon components on my bike, since I don't do racing and I have at least some sustainabillity in mind.
But the fear and loathing of carbon itt is remarkable.

But carbon is for people with sense and no money. It's affordable and it has all the properties you want out of a bike frame. A comfortable carbon bike that flexes where it should, and has stiffness where it should, is like $1200, what kind of steel bike are you getting for $1200? Heavy, clunky, gas pipe garbage is what you're getting.
And then if you do fred out and buy the $5000 steel bike all you larpers pretend you're riding (even though we all know it's a gaspipe surly with QR dropouts and cable disc brakes, but let's pretend), sure now you have the #souplesse and #planing but if you look at it funny it dents and then it's game over, it can't be fixed.
At least you can fix carbon.

Yeah bro you're a bit of a silly billy. Carbon is light. That's it's only benefit and lightweight components come at the cost of safety. Which is fine if you want speed but I and many others do not find the possibility of a handlebar/fork/whatever on their bike snapping to be a selling point.

Yeah but people who are looking for an ali express bike are probably pretty price sensitive. If you're buying a winspace frame you're looking at an all-in cost that rivals a prestige brand's cheapest possible bike. You're getting a much higher spec bike, but it's not for hardcore penny pinchers, it's still going to cost you like $5k if you want a build that's worth all that trouble
