DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) — After first threatening another trade war and then hinting at an actual one to wrest control of Greenland away from Denmark, President Donald Trump Wednesday backed down from all his threats and claimed victory.
Trump crowed about a “framework of a future deal” — reminiscent of his “concept of a plan” to solve the health care crisis — as sufficient to end a weekslong crisis of his own creation.
“Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region,” Trump posted on his social media platform. “This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations. Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st.”
Trump had announced he would levy 10% tariffs on all imports from Denmark and seven other NATO allies who held a joint exercise in Greenland after he began his latest round of bluster about the Arctic island. That tax, which like all U.S. tariffs would have been paid by Americans, was to have risen to 25% come June 1 if Denmark had not handed over Greenland by then.
Trump has been obsessed with Greenland since his first term when he wanted to purchase it. In those years, he was surrounded by traditional Republicans, many with substantial military and foreign policy experience, who were able to talk him out of pressing the matter after Denmark showed no interest in giving up the semi-autonomous possession.

In this second term, however, Trump intentionally chose staff who uncritically support his every whim. Trump and top aide Stephen Miller have openly pushed a might-makes-right foreign policy that undoes decades of the post-World War II order that at least attempted to establish international rules and laws.
Trump offered his view on that earlier Wednesday in a speech to the world leaders and business executives gathered in Davos, Switzerland, at the annual World Economic Forum. “Then after the war, which we won. We won it big. Without us right now, you’d all be speaking German and little Japanese, perhaps,” he said. “After the war, we gave Greenland back to Denmark. How stupid were we to do that? But we did it. But we gave it back. But how ungrateful are they now?”
Trump began mentioning Greenland again after winning the 2024 election and in the first weeks after taking office, typically in tandem with wanting to retake the Panama Canal. The chatter increased as Vice President JD Vance planned a trip to Greenland in March — but the trip itself deflated concerns when Vance was unable to arrange substantive meetings with local officials.
The whole issue disappeared as Trump turned his attention to Iran and then Venezuela, and resurfaced after that operation successfully captured that country’s dictator and brought him back to the United States on drug trafficking charges. On Jan. 6, he told The New York Times, “we are going to do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not,” setting off the two-week crisis that threatened to destroy NATO.
While Trump had never specifically said he would use military force to seize Greenland, he had repeatedly refused to rule it out. He finally ruled out using the military in a speech upon arrival in Davos after flying overnight from Washington.

The backing-away from the tariffs came after a one-on-one meeting hours later with NATO’s Rutte, the one European leader who continues using flattery and praise to persuade Trump. That had been the consensus approach among European officials after Trump retook office a year ago, but many have abandoned it after it failed to keep Trump from ending U.S. military assistance to Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia four years ago.
French president Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and others attending Davos have been blunt in their criticism of Trump’s policies and particularly his attempt to grab Greenland.
In his announcement, Trump said the agreement with NATO will help the U.S. build a massive missile defense shield for the entire United States but offered no details as to how that would work. It is also unclear what a new agreement would offer the United States that it cannot already do under a 1951 treaty with Denmark about U.S. military installations there.

You think Putin slowed down his Russian troll farm after all the success he has had turning Americans against each other? Half of all traffic on the internet is bots now. Just bots spreading misinformation and trying to drum up engagement.
https://www.techradar.com/pro/security/bots-now-account-for-over-half- of-all-internet-traffic
But keep trying to deny it. You fucking Russian troll bot. Beep boops.

You have it backwards. There have already been bases and American projects on Greenland. Had Trump simply approached it normally in the first place these negotiations could have happened already. Instead, Trump acted like a boorish asshole bully do Denmark literally told him to fuck off. Now he's going back to regular negotiations but trying to spin it like some kind of win. He's an idiot.

If you think it's Putin, not Trump turning Americans against each other you're a fool. Unless your take is that being best buddies as they are, Trump is taking notes from on how to make life miserable enough that people are busy arguing with each other to bother with corruption.

Unironically the art of the deal.
>we want [ridiculous thing]
>fuck off, no we aren't selling
>do it or we'll do [dangerous thing]
>reeeeee!
>alright, how about we settle on [thing I alway wanted]
>alright fine here you go

Nah, Trump was always going to TACO and throw a tantrum, no matter how EU, NATO and Denmark were always going to throwa party in celebration of a weak orange subhuman folding like a lawn chair while pointing & laughing at him and his weaksauce little cultists such as you, 1480258MAGA and their orange god: the laughingstock of the world

the US has missile and military programs everywhere. he didn't need to do all of this just for that. this isn't about what he got, this is about power and control of minerals + oil. he's after canada and venezuela for oil as well.

They never threw tantrums when other deals were made. The only reason there is any tension to start with is that Trump is acting incredibly boorish and unprofessional. Everyone else (minus Macron lol) is conducting themselves as heads of state taking their positions and responsibilities seriously, but Trump is still acting as if he's on a sleazy reality show and what's more to the point seems to think he's hosting. In a very short time he has all but destroyed all the good will and trust America built over the last 80 years. I know most of you scoff like that's no big deal, but those who do are incredibly foolish.

>The U.S. was a larger imperial power now, with a greater interest in expanding. It had also set its sights on building the Panama Canal, and this made it even more interested in purchasing St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix in order to secure the future canal’s route. Again, another secretary of state (this time John Hay) negotiated a treaty with Denmark. The Senate ratified the treaty in 1902, but this time, the Danish parliament rejected it.
>In 1915, the fear of German takeover motivated the U.S. to make another try for the islands. Especially after the sinking of the Lusitania, President Woodrow Wilson and Secretary of State Robert Lansing feared that Germany might annex Denmark and launch more attacks from the Danish West Indies. Danish leaders resisted ceding the islands and their majority-black inhabitants to the racially-segregated United States.
>Angry at this, Lansing insinuated that if Denmark didn’t sell the U.S. the islands, it just might go and seize them to prevent Germany for getting to them. It was a bullying tactic, and it worked.
>Eager to prevent a U.S. military attack (Denmark was currently a neutral party in World War I), Denmark negotiated a treaty with the U.S. that President Wilson signed on January 16, 1917. On March 31, 1917, Denmark formally transferred governance over the islands to the U.S., and the U.S. reciprocated by paying Denmark $25 million in gold coin.

It's been a while since we've seen someone openly call for the end of US hegemony and its place in the global theater directly to the president's face.
It being followed by a bunch of foreign divestment form the United States is actually telling of what the future's going to be because the old man keeps shitting himself

lol. I can remember when Trump suggested the EU not be so dependent on Russian oil Merkel laughed in his face. Then Russia invaded Ukraine.
I remember last week all the yuropoors digging in their heels and daring Trump to invade.
The reality is Western Eruope can't do a fucking thing to disrupt the US hegemony hence the coping and seething.

Saying “by any means necessary” and trying to economically blackmail people is still threatening.
I honestly can’t think of anything different I would be doing if I wanted to end the US’s reputation and push the world away from the dollar

To me, this is the interesting thing. The Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, with whom Trump talked, has absolutely no say over Greenland's sovereignty. It seems like negotiations went like this:
>Trump: "I WANT GREENLAND"
The Kingdom of Denmark: "No. Fuck off."
>Trump: "I WANT TO SPEAK TO THE MANAGER"
Rutte: "I'm the manager. Er, here's a voucher for a complimentary, er, 'framework'"
>Trump:*triumphantly shows framework-voucher to press*

>I was being succinct.
You were being inaccurate.
>They told him that no one is going to stop him
source?
>I don't know if they told him directly or indirectly, publicly or privately
oh, no source
>but Greenland is a go, buckle up buckeroos
my arse

>a talk about idea for a future framework for future negotiations for a deal about greenland
>neither greenland or denmark were oart of these talks
face it, Trump tacoed again. NATO has no power to force it's members to cede sovereign territory.
Mark Ruttevwas just nice and gave the orange retard something to say to trick his retarded cult into thinking they won something

>Doesn't get greenland
>Rapidly becoming clear his "concepts" of a deal were just shit NATO's head told him to make him stop throwing a hissy fit at the WEF
>Embarrassed both himself and the country
>"A-Art of the deal!"
>>
>>
>>1480947
In this case the failure has severely harmed any chance at future successes along with creating long term reputational damage, and the "success" is fucking nothing. You cannot run a country like a business where worst case you leave with a golden parachute.

>sale
how is this even a discussion? I swear Trump is so incompetent it's not even funny. Denmark has no legal grounds to sell Greenland, even if they wanted to. Trump could threaten dropping nukes on Copenhagen and they still wouldn't sell it.
It's like asking the UK to buy Canada or Australia from them

Don't forget what made him fold was the EU was preparing to tear up their trade deal with US and Macron saying the Anti-Coercion Instrument was on the table, which would have completely looked the US out of the European market fucking the US economy.
And they didn't even get into the true nuclear option of liquidating their holdings of US debt which would instantly cause the US economy to go into a depression.
EU had trump by the balls and that's why he caved hard.

I do think there was a larger cult around Reagan

Did you ever hear of a Trump Democrat? A democrat who would vote blue but they love Trump so much they had to vote for him instead?
