Welcome to 4chan's Offroad General - where high ground clearance meets low IQ. If it hasn't rolled over yet, you aren't trying hard enough. Post your 4x4 trucks and SUVs. This thread is for the guys who actually leave the pavement and have the broken CV axles to prove it.

Maybe the blazer is easier. It went really smooth for me as an advanced wrenchlet. My only issue was not realizing that I needed an updated bracket, so I had to run to the parts store halfway through. AI said mechanics charge $450-700 labor for this job.

attaching a cast-iron transfer case to a transmission might be the most difficult auto endeavour i've done yet.
the offset round bottom makes it so a transmission jack won't work as intended.
i raised it with the jack and lines up the splines. then i slung 2 ratchet straps across the frame to hold up the case and slowly lowered the jack until the offset portion started to drop, and the bolt holes lined up

This is what happens to huwyte "women".
You want to pick the babby-faced ones, at least initially, because the cartilaginous parts of the face (and hands like knuckles) are responsive to Growth Whoremoan and continue growing throughout one's lifespan, even when bones stop growing in adulthood. Thus why old people have big long ears and shit. All women are basically on an unstoppable march towards Goblinification.

the linkage is mounted to the 203 case only, straight into the cab. the spring inside the mechanism could be weak, broken or filled with mud. it's a bitch to get on and off, too
or the internal detents could be worn out, in which case i'm fuxx0red
mounts are all new, i'll have to check to make sure the trans mounts are still tight

Im finishing up my TJ build and need tires. I plan on driving it on the road more than off but will be doing some heavy off roading when I can. I had Mickey Thompson MTZ but I didn't like their snow capabilities or wet traction(obvious MT issues). Im considering aggressive ATs like the Baja Boss AT. Or should I get Baja Boss MTs, or any other MT, and just deal with it? Its not my main vehicle by any means. I just want the availability to drive it in snow, ice or heavy rain and not have my asshole puckered. I guess the best option is to get 2 sets of wheels and tires but im running out of storage space and thats a lot of added cost.
Im also considering going to 37s but I'm still on D44s. 4" lift, 1" BL, hi-line fenders, big brake kit, 5.13 gears. Stock wheelbase with short arms. I ate through BJs on 35s and thats still the weak spot.

I've had many sets of MTs and I disagree. I'm rebuilding the TJ because I wrecked it with MTs. Granted, I was driving in conditions that MTs aren't optimal for. Im still mulling it since it's not a daily.
>>28820149
Yeah, that seems to be the consensus. Flip side of this is spring and summer wheeling here is a lot of mud. They look aggressive enough to clean themselves and not get too packed, but idk

Anyone have experience with Discoverys? I bought a 1998 V8 Disco 1 yesterday for the princely sum of £5400, and while it has a couple of silly little problems, it otherwise seems to be *relatively* rust free at first glance, and it's pretty damn clean overall. Previous owner had it 16 years and has taken surprisingly good care of it. Do you guys reckon it's worth keeping as a general do-it-all kinda car, or do you think I'm better of selling it on? I don't really plan to go off-roading, but as I do a little bit of buying and selling, I sort of feel like it'll be useful for trailering motors back and forth; at the moment I have to borrow my brother's VW Crafter. I've always sort of wanted a Range Rover classic, but with prices of those sky rocketing recently and this suddenly falling in my lap, it just seems like a shame to let it go. Thoughts?

Hi from the beach. Today I hit a big pothole, and tire lost pressure. Some friendly guys helped hammer the wheel back to mostly round shape, and I was able to get to the next town where a professional hammered it some more. After that, there were 40 km of washboard roads, which separated something in the exhaust, so the car is pretty loud now. I will fix it in the next town. The beach is super nice, and it was fun driving on it. Glad I am driving AWD, the 2WD guys keep getting stuck in the deep sand.

Need some help figuring out what would be the better buy
-2017 4Runner has a lift and wheels. 100k and asking price is $25k
-2022 Frontier Pro 4X stock with 40k miles. Dealer OTD price is $33k
-2018 Tacoma TRD something or another. 68k miles and dealer is asking $29k
-2025 Tacoma SR5. 12k miles and dealer is asking $35k
I’m inclined to go 4Runner just because I can buy it outright and not have a payment but the thought of “just $10k more to have a newer, lower mileage vehicle” eats away at me. Also the Tacoma and Frontier would have a factory warranty still…

>Worth taking on some debt for?
Honestly thats on you and your financial situation.
I took out a loan for my last vehicle because my 401k has a higher return than the interest on the car loan. I would have lost money if I had paid cash.
But honestly all 4 of those are good trucks.
I avoid lifted trucks (but I lift my own). Im very particular on brands of kits. Some are engineered well enough to have comparable ride quality and handling to factory (sometimes even better). Others have absolute dogshit spring rates and chinese welds i wouldnt trust on a shopping cart.
The Pro and the TRD are the better trucks. They have more robust components than stock. SR5 is just a nicer trim level so better seats but same drivetrain as lower trims.

>>28851409
According to the seller of the 4Runner the lift was installed by the dealer. Not sure if that means much but I guess it’s nice that it’s documented and wasn’t some shadetree project
>>28851416
That’s what I’ve read as well. I’m kind of tired of listening to all the creaks and rattles my Mustang has at only 36k miles
>>
>>
>>28851966
#1)
If you plan on getting a lift, the 4runner already has it.
#2)
The 4runner is not a pickup. This is like debating between a Mercedes, Mustang, Camaro and Challenger. One thing is not like the others and fills a completely different role.
#3)
2017 vs 2025 is like you hit up one dealer and stopped looking. Its as though you dont really know what you want and are juat putting in the least amount of effort and just taking whatever is offered.

You don't want to blow $30k on a random truck from the car lot on 5th & Main just because the closest other dealer is an hour drive and you'd rather be doing something else on a saturday than avoiding orcs on the freeway.
This is one time tou need to put some effort into it.
I will say this-
GM and Toyota are lacking in wind tunnel testing. So with windows at specific positions you'll get weird eddys or acoustic resonance. Some vehicles can be undlbearable.
Not saying those years Tacoma are affected, just something to test.

Oh perfect. Lots of public land in WA. I lived in WA for 7 years. Are you open to owning two vehicles? You could keep your current daily and get a shitbox 4x4 to see how often you really use it for offroading and camping. If it ends up getting a lot of use then you can upgrade. You'll also have a better idea of what's important to you before making an expensive purchase.

Max 28" because it uses a strap system over the tires to tie it down.
>>
>>
>>
>>28864791
If you understand mechanics you could get a ratchet strap the same size (2"?) and use it as an extension on the existing tire harness.
Or if the rim isnt some shit ass steelie you could just run it through the rim.
Or you could wrap the included tire harness over the lower control arm.
As long as it pulls the car to the bumpstops and doesnt loosen up youre fine.
In minecraft.

so it has OEM 1" lift and rear e-locker
i ripped the rear bumper off at 10k km and replaced it with a steel one. hidden winch kit with 8k warn
currently has a roof rack and a diamondback aluminum bed cover (not pictured)
also partially ripped off the stupid stock side steps so i cut off the steps themselves and left the aluminum nerf bar

unfortunately I found out the 6.0 is 4.015". The lh6 is completely wasted and there's nothing to salvage. Oddly it had a 24x crank in it so I think I'll find a dime a dozen lm7 and tap the block for gen 4 knock sensors. L92 will definitely NOT work now

The fact you even felt the camera quality was worth mentioning implies you dont need a truck.
You need a purse for your bus pass.
I guarantee you look for options like apple car play and adaptive cruise control and have no idea if any of those trucks have lockers or trans coolers.
Just get a Miata and move on with life. Be sure to get a color your boyfriend will like.

Mahle 953480 does not have the right size o rings for a 4.0 oil filter adapter. The big one looks like it fits but it kept wanting to squeeze out one side, and immediately blew out when I started it. I'm getting real tired of these fake bullshit parts mahle is too fucking expensive to send me this bullshit

Toyota says it's because the LC70s don't meet US emissions (specifically on the diesel) and safety standards, but what they actually mean is that a) they don't want to pay to meet US standards for a vehicle they think will be niche (it wouldn't be), and b) they're worried it will affect the sales of the techbloat goymobiles that make up their SUV and truck divisions that they already produce way too many of. I can almost guarantee that the big three lobbying the fuck out of the government also keeps Toyota limited on what they can bring in. if Toyota brought pared-down compact pickups and SUVs back into the US market they'd make a killing, especially if they used any of the small diesel engines they use in Australia or SEA.

I upgraded my brakes one piece at a time.
I replaced my master cylinder with one from a newer truck with a larger bore diameter. It made the brakes require a lot of leg to stop quickly. Then I put on a newer dual diaphragm booster. That made the brakes super twitchy off idle, but I can lock up the tires very easily. It's a weird feeling, and it'll definitely take some getting used to.
Next, I'll throw on some bigger calipers from a newer model. :)
I'll put on some steel braided lines that I have lying around too.

What does their back and knees have to do with touch screens and shit?
You can load a vehicle with all the comfy tech like power running boards, 70-way power seats, power steering wheel and pedals. What drives them nuts and everyone is shit like the massive touchscreen for everything, driver alerts for every acorn you drive over and “safety” features that take over control of the car

I like all of the silent digital assists when I need them. Trail management, etc.. Kind of happy lately that I got my truck in 2023 before Ford went all Tesla and made the touchscreen even bigger on new ones. I can at least manage my damn AC the old fashioned way.

that's kind of how I look at it. that, and lots of loyal Toyota 4x4 drivers hate what the land cruiser has become and hate the turbo 4cyl engines they put in their almost all of their 4x4 vehicles now. not to mention how more simple vehicles are becoming more desirable now that vehicles cost so fucking much, and how much more complicated vehicle tech has made things. i think it would be worth doing a limited release to at least test the waters. part of the problem is that automakers now have moved away from what buyers may actually want and just to continue building on trends and features that nobody asked for/aren't relevant to most drivers.

about to lift my truck
thinking about
extended travel king 2.5s
deaver n98's, archive garage LD, or possibly icon RXTs
hammer hangers, or rago knockoffs
either dirt king, JD fab, or accutune UCAs
method 703s, 0 offset, maybe modco wheels
probally will wait until memorial day for some sales
after that, i might regear to 5.29s, altho im at 4.30s already
i can get a rear chunk for like 1800 from ecgs
idk about the front, a front locker is like 17 with out gears its expensive
thinking about just a helical lsd for the front. not super useful with a wheel off the ground, but on flat ground, theyre pretty good, and better than open.

Theyre actually tundra shocks with a different bottom mount to fit the tacoma. Now you have extra travel to go with your flexy 10 leaf rear springs for more travel. Theyre valved different to suit the weight also. I think accutune is the only one who does this.
I kept on trying to understand how dudes were putting on 5160s or really any aftermarket shock rated for 1.5" of lift on trucks with aftermarket rear springs that lifted up the rear 2" The math wasnt mathing for me.
cheaper option would be to modify a set of 5125s but youre still only getting a 46mm shock that way, and you have to raise your bump stop up high to keep them from blowing out.
this all started with me just wanting a new set of tires
if fedex doesnt fuck me, the rest comes in tomorrow. maybe ill start install next weekend.
ill keep you guys updated

do you really have to compress the coil to change the height on them? i think 3 threads is 1" from the box, and a half inch equals an inch of height, so maybe another couple 4 or 5 turns should do me?
everything mostly has come in except the DRT spring hangers. apparently theres a week or two lead time on them. I could probally do the install this weekend if it wasnt for that.
got my tires and rims also.

That should all go straight to the frame not the body
This diesel swap has been working perfectly since installing it, haven't changed anything major mechanically, it just works perfectly and gets amazing MPG, so happy with it, I stuck the 31s on it since the gearing is off though, gonna change the gearing once I slap the 35s on it and then put the 31s on the volvo wagon

frame rails
You think it's transmitting the force through box, to the rails, and through the body mounts somehow? or maybe my blown out control arm bushings. I have a set ready to go in.
