My car's wheels seem to vibrate significantly when going high speeds ~110km/h+. I get worried the wheels are going to fly off. I have driven significant distances and nothing has happened, though.
Should I be concerned?

>>
>>28816552
How come cars do not have air brakes?
>>
>>28816601
there are a couple things this could be
1. you have bad tires. the best way to check would be to rotate your tires and see if the vibration moves in anyway. if it does you probably need new tires or need them to be balanced better.
2. if your rotors are warped they can drag intermittently on the retracted brake pad which can cause vibration. the vibration would get worse under light braking
3. it’s something in the suspension, or a wheel bearing, which would be far more difficult to diagnose properly
>>
>>28816781
air brakes are great when you can afford to put a heavy air compressor on your vehicle, but most cars aren’t able to whether for packaging or fuel efficiency reasons. you need such a large volume of air to generate the same pressure as a hydraulic system

tldr. hydraulics are faster and lighter, but less fault tolerant to leaks.

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL550 here.
When running errands in it in prep for the winter storm I'm pretty sure I killed the starter battery, that and the cold, and I was feeling like the starter battery was on its way out. What it was giving me before was "choking, choking, choking" then it would start up, and it's now throwing me a CEL. However, I tried today to start it and it started up without incident, but the CEL is still flashing. Is it using another battery as a backup, it has three.
>>
What's the best tint % that will still allow you to see at night?
I was thinking 20% thoughts?
>>
>>28818151
Nevermind it's just the starter battery. It does this every fucking winter.

My city is salting the roads for the first time ever. Should I get an undercarriage wash after this winter storm?
>>
>>28818232
yes, you should. but wait until the roads get dry-ish. if theres still snow or slush on the roads theres no point
>>
>>28818285
Who do I go to, usually for that? I assume drive-through washes don't do it as well.
>>
>>28818285
Also, it hasn't snowed yet, but do they put the salt on before or after it snows? Because if they put it on today then my car is going to be sitting around until Monday with salt on it...

Keep hearing a loud clicking sound coming from the driver side of the engine bay. I can even hear it in the cabin. Any idea of what it could be? 2003 Corolla. It doesn't sound like usual VVTI engine noise
>>
>>28818303
>>28818313
it varies. in Michigan they salt as they plow.

most drive thru car washes have an underbody wash, its usually one of the options. if you care about taking it through a car wash you can find a touchless one in your area, but they can be hard to find. itll do well enough, but you can run it through 2 or 3 times to ensure most of it gets off if you’re worried.

I'm going to look at a 1988 Toyota corolla hatch in the next few days, its been engine swapped with a 4age silver top 4age and 6 speed manual.
The add says it currently doesn't run as fuel pump is busted and he has a replacement but no time too many projects ect ect.
Other than spraying starting fluid to see how the engine runs/starts any other ideas of what to look for?

What car should I get next? Looking at maybe a Cayman GT4, which is probably about as high as I would go for cost. Current car is a '03 911 Turbo with 600whp, previous cars were 92 Skyline GT-R and a turbo 07 Civic Si. Already have a family car, so not worried about two seats vs. four. Prefer a manual since it seems they will be harder and harder to get as the years go by.

I need a vehicle for my wife to drive for the next couple years that is easy to load and drive 3 young children around. So I was thinking of some shitty minivan or traverse until 2/3 of the kids are out of car seats and then getting something we actually want to drive for 10+ years.

Would it make sense to just lease the minivan/traverse for the next few years and saving my down payment money for what we really want when the lease is up? By then I could probably buy a brand new truck or full size suv with cash. I feel like this would be the better move since I know for sure I'm not keeping the vehicle longer than a couple years anyways

>>
>>28819446
You can crunch the numbers yourself and see what's better. With leasing you gotta give back the vehicle in pristine condition or they'll charge you for what it cost them to fix it back up. This means no dings or scratches anywhere, no stained seats or carpets, etc. up to you if you trust your wife and kids to keep the vehicle in tip top shape. Personally I'd buy a minivan to keep, it's more practical than a truck or SUV at the expense of not being "cool".

Time has come to sell my shitbox.
Similar examples seem to be asking around 2.5-3k.
It's got a few known issues that need attention. Most I can probably do myself and shouldn't be too expensive, but I'm wondering if it's worth the effort of trying to do it up for sale or I should just try sell it as is or sell it to a car dealer.
Other issue is it's registered in another state, and I don't know what it would need done to pass a roadworthy. Last time I did one (on a much newer car) cost me 2k so there's a good chance I'll end up worse off for my effort - that being said the requirements seem to be less stringent than where I am now.

I think I'm far more likely to find a seller if I do it up and pass a roadworthy but for the effort and how much it costs I might be better off just selling it to a dealer. Never done that before but I'm guessing I'd get 1-1.5k for it.

Reatard here, please help me
I've never used winter tires before even though I live somewhere that sees a lot of snow
I have an 2007 Rav4
does it make more sense to:
>buy a set of wheels, mount winter tires to them, swap the wheels out by myself in the parking lot of my apartment
or
>buy winter tires, pay someone to mount them each fall and put my all seasons back on each spring
also, recommendations for spring-thru-fall tires?
>>
>>28820520
>buy a set of wheels, mount winter tires to them, swap the wheels out by myself in the parking lot of my apartment
If you have the storage space, this is easily the best option. You can find used OEM wheels at car-part.com
>>
>>28820525
I'd add that mounting & balancing four tires is easily $100 nowadays, but you can still find coupons for a rotation to cost $20 and even full price should be like $35ish. With two sets of tires on wheels you should be able to pay for a rotation and have them swapped if you can't be bothered to diy in the parking lot.
>>
How the fuck do I fix this? Previous owner injected epoxy under the surface to try to fix it from delaminating

Is getting an LS400 a bad idea? I'm not that interested into ricing it out as they're usually seen. I'm only interested in having a V8 luxobarge to replace my current chrysler 300
>timing belt is a necessity
Is this the only main issue with them? I understand that it can be a bit of an expensive fix but it's one that only needs to be done every 100,000 miles or so. I assume due to age their parts will be a bit more expensive as it's a luxury vehicle
>>
>>28820636
The way it should have been done from the beginning. Remove the dash from the car, remove leather/vinyl, sand it flat and reupholster, then reinstall.
It might just be easier to get a good used dash from a scrapper.
>>
>>28819908
tldr:
Is it better to spend the money to make your junker sellable (which I'd probably get 2-2.5k for, not knowing how much it will cost to do so) or just sell it to a dealer
>>
>>28820638
Apparently a weak spot is the starter and alternator if oil drips on it. New timing belt is essential. Some years have non interference engines and snapped belt wont grenade your engine. My parts are on their way since i have no idea when it was the last time it got changed. The belt looks fine but i just want the peace of mind. Overall dont do it, i need all the parts available.
>>
For my first car, I got a used Altima SR V6 with the vq35de engine in it. I assumed I was getting a shitty econobox, and I definitely did, but that engine is pushing hp in the high 200's on a relatively small sedan, and with the CVT it is smooth as hell (even if it handles like shit).
I've had it forever now and want to swap out for something, preferably faster, but it seems like every mid-sized sedan produced in the past 10 years has been a 4 cylinder with a "sport" trim that simply matches my current car.
The only options for 6 cylinders are massive musclecar deals that should arguably have a V8 at their size but cope with twin turbo and cost a trillion dollars for it.
Am I missing something here, or is that really just what it is?
>>
In my old shitbox car the hand brake lever doesn't do the clicky sound when i pull it up and doesn't hold, i have to yank it several times up and down before it finally clicks and holds.

Any easy way to solve it? Do i just need to lube something up?
>>
>>28821432
remove the center console or whatever needed to get to the handbrake mechanism then check the ratcheting mechanism
>>
>>28821458
before i waste my time doing it myself, do you think it will be an easy fix?
>>
>>28821381
Nice grey, anon.
>Apparently a weak spot is the starter and alternator if oil drips on it
Good call. I'll keep this in mind. It'll give me a good reason to not put off fixing oil leaks in that case
>Some years have non interference engines and snapped belt wont grenade your engine.
I believe it's the pre-facelift engines that are non-interference, since the facelift got VVT. The facelift model years are what I'm looking at, as having VVT would help at least just a little bit with efficiency. Not that I care much about that to begin with.
>Overall dont do it, i need all the parts available.
I did some watching of videos doing the job and it does look like a wrist-deep job. Most likely I'd take it to a JDM mechanic to do it, which I don't mind. There are few things I won't do myself on a car and that'll certainly be one of them.
>>
>>28819908
>>28821232
Depends on what car it is and how much it costs to get it roadworthy. Some cars just aren't worth shit even if they're in pristine condition.
>>28821426
>Am I missing something here, or is that really just what it is?
What is? I assume you realize there's plenty of performance cars that smoke yours but you're expecting to get something good for Altima prices, which ain't happening.

>Toyota Corolla SE 2020
bros, I don't know shit about cars. Today my car wouldn't start, seemed like a dying battery. I asked ChatGPT for help and it said to check the battery date. The battery seems to have been manufactured in March of 2019. ChatGPT said it's surprising it lasted this long. So I'm thinking tomorrow I take the battery out, Uber to AutoZone, have them test it to make sure it's dead, buy whatever battery they recommend to replace it, Uber back to my place, replace it, and hope that fixes it. Is that what I'm supposed to do? Am I going to kill myself replacing it myself? I figured the mechanics take care of all this stuff during routine maintenance.
Fuck, I forgot where I put my pliers.
>>
would pic related look good in a MR2 spyder? i love the 80s boxiness, but the spyder exterior is already out of the pointy corners design phase
>>
The transmission in my GS400 is starting to slip occasionally. Is it the kiss of death? Is this the sort of thing a shop can fix with a drain & fill and a bottle of Lucas if I address it now, or should I start saving for a rebuild/replacement and pray it holds out until then?

I need to weld the jacking points on my project car. I have a 2-post car lift. Obviously I can't weld the jacking points while the car is on the lift. The question then becomes: how do I raise the car up high enough that I can work underneath it?
>>
>>28823469
Check the battery voltage with a multimeter. If it's bad, I'd probably not replace it myself. At least on newer Volvos the car shits itself if the electronics are completely de-energized and then you need to take it to the dealer.

>>28823654

How hard/invasive would it be to wire a button toggle for my VDC fuse?
I can crimp cables and stuff it's not that hard but never added a new button. There's some empty button slots. Is this a good easy project to try?

Also ABS brakes suck in the snow, established fact and my personal experience agrees, that's the reason I want to do this, but if my goal is to get from point A to point B safely and not out for a rip will I be worse off since it also disables the other traction control features (fake limited slip diff via brakes, not sure about what else)
>>
>>28823469
Changing the battery is pretty easy, you got this. Besides getting the right size you have to make sure the orientation of positive/negative terminals matches your vehicle. Autozone is good, tell them the make/model/year, they saved me from making the above mistake once.

Also before you uber to autozone make sure the battery cables didn't just come loose from the battery, cinch them down tight. That happened to me once and my bike died in an intersection.

I got stuck in the snow yesterday and spent nearly 2h trying to get out
I drive a 2020 GTI 6sp
Basically the engine was already warmed up from my commute home and I spent the 2h digging, rocking, digging some more, rocking, frustration rev to 4k, digging, etc
I'm worried with as long as it took to get out if I might've put undue stress on my drivetrain
My transaxle specifically
What sort of things should I keep an eye out for in the short term to make sure I didn't cause any damage to my car?
There was no burning smell or CEL
Reverse feels a bit more clunky to shift into but that could also be placebo
>>
have you built or expanded the parking at your place before? I have a shitty uncovered driveway, lots of trees, and several cars that I want to better maintain and protect. the house was built in 1970 and whoever chose the layout without a garage must have hated their car.
I think my ideal solution would be a longer structure over the driveway, and a prefab in the back to use as a detached garage but I've gotta find somewhere to start researching pricing and recommendations.
>>
>>28823469
also check for corrosion or rusty terminals, if the connection to the battery is also bad a new battery won't help

Placebo is highly likely.
Let's think about what was stressed here:
Essentially only the clutch pack and flywheel mating surface.
50+ shifts between 1st and reverse aren't going to damage componentry that was designed for hundreds of thousands of cycles
If you had burned such, you would have smelled it.

I bought a 2025 Subaru Impreza last year and I believe something may be wrong with it.
Occasionally while driving there will be a feeling of a "shudder" I feel through the pedal/seat. The best way I can describe the shudder is like the feeling you get when your heart skips a beat, but you feel it through the vehicle.
I don't really know if it's something with AWD system since Subaru's send power to all wheels at all times generally, the transmission, or something else. It could just be a normal part of the car for all I know, but it doesn't feel right.
I had the dealer look at it once already but they thought I was talking about a stall/loss of power and troubleshooted it as such. How can I cover my own ass so I can get it looked at/fixed while it's under a warranty period? My current plan is to get a scan tool and see if it's throwing any codes or if it shows any abnormalities and use that to press the dealership more.

I’m almost positive it’s the same 4/5 speed (depending on year) from the LS, so it’s good for a few hundred thousand at least barring serious neglect. Has it ever had a transmission service before? Even if it hasn’t, you’re still in the window where you can do it and almost certainly get a good result. I’d have it inspected at your shop (looking for metal flakes in the fluid) and plan for a transmission service. You shouldn’t be planning to replace original transmissions at 90k.

>>28826532

>>
>>28826573
It's a '98 and I'm 99% sure it's a 5-speed. The miles are low, but the previous owner didn't take great care of it so I doubt it's been serviced. Mainly, I'm just wondering if I can expect this to cost a few hundred bucks, or a few thousand. It only slips when it's cold out and hasn't had adequate time to warm up, so I don't think it's too far gone, but I don't know what problems are fixable on a transmission and what are "just replace it" tier. I've got a couple of good transmission shops in the area so I'll plan on taking it in for a checkup ASAP.

It'll be a pain in the ass but you won't permanently lose the car. Unless it's some special snowflake, all of the unique information should be on the car's side and the keys will just be generic boards that program themselves to the car's numbers. If you lose all your keys, you'll have to either call a locksmith or visit a dealership and provide proof of ownership of the car, at which point they'll make you a fresh key and bill you for it.

Since combustion happens at top dead center, it seems like only the bore matters, in terms of the amount of volume where combustion can happen.

I am considering buying a 2018/2019 Dodge Challenger V6 with the biased AWD. While the V8 models aren't outside my budget, I honestly don't know where to let it rip, but the AWD would save my skin on certain uphills.
Are there any issues I need to be aware of? If it is just annual preventive maintenance, then that's not foreign to me.

Where did the term "lamb truck" come from? I have never seen a shepherd driving one of those abominations, they just get a regular truck or SUV.

In reality there are no hard and fast rules for what a "muscle car" vs. "sports car" are and people who do often have pretty stupid reasons for it (le Corvette is a muscle car because it's American and front-engined). "Muscle" and "sports" really are just two different colloquial terms for a car whose purpose isn't pure practicality (and isn't an off-roader). Muscle caught on as the term in America is all.
What happened to separate the terms is that as European and Japanese cars got more popular in America we noticed that their sports cars were a lot different than ours. Theirs seemed to have smaller engines, sophisticated suspensions, and a focus on light weight, and also tended to only seat two, whereas ours were big, had backseats as a pathetic attempt at "practicality," used big truck engines and big truck suspensions, as they were only designed to go fast in a straight line at the drag strip or on the highway.
Because there's not any real difference, muscle these days more or less just means any car that seems similar to the style of those cars made during the Displacement Wars of the 60s and 70s, which generally means rear-wheel drive, manual transmission, a V8 bigger than 4 liters, front-engined, 2+2 capacity. But for me, the big thing is just the styling. If the car looks like aerodynamics weren't a consideration at all, then it's powered by "all muscle," and it's more of a muscle car, despite things like the Mustang now being just as good around a corner as anything else thanks to modern suspensions and aero.

Oh I guess another personal requirement for me is having a crossplane V8, since once America learned cross-plane V8s run much smoother than flat-plane V8s we just decided that we're never going to build a V12 again.

Race of prior owners should be a major factor
Zf8 needs new fluid and filter every 50ish thousand miles, may as well do the diffs then too

>Oil switch replacement
15 minute job to unscrew the old one and put in a new one, including wrestling the new sensor out of its box, they'll bill you for the whole hour
>Bad wire replacement
Depends on the car, but it could be a couple of hours at least.
Isn't the usual fare like 100 bucks per hour?

If apple car play is really a deal breaker, a sturdy length of rope

what causes rough idling when it's in drive ONLY (not park)? i've recently changed the spark plugs, ignition coils, intake manifold gasket, and recent passed a smog check.

>If the circuit boards on both my keys die am I fucked?
There should be a backup option that uses the physical key. It might be concealed though.

>>28828787
>only have a keyhole on the passenger side
What's the car?
Post a pic of the driver side handle/lock.

>one key is already dead and the circuit board is exposed on the working one
You can duct tape the working one and 3d print a new case for it, or ask a friend too.
Your dead key might just need a battery but if not, there are loads of little stores selling replacement keys. It won't be $300. You just need a guy with the right tool and a second hand key to recode.

>How can I fix this?
Get the smallest drill bit you can find and drill it out.
Then redrill the holes slightly and use the next screw size up.

Replaced the starter on my g35 with a new remy starter.

Car makes a whirring sound and doesn’t turn on with the new starter. I’m guessing it’s not engaging?

How often are new starters faulty out of the box? Is there something I should try or just buy another starter?

Just bench tested the starter, it spins great but does not pop out. I’m a tard and now there’s short spark burns from bench testing it. Doubt it’s returnable now.

Try returning it anyway, worst they can say is no.

It’s from rock auto so hopefully they can do something. Got a starter from autozone and the car fired right up, so there’s at least that.

What should I add and subtract from this parts list
This will be my first car once my mom gives it and I have enough money to buy some of this stuff by summer.
