They were used as race cars before he ever touched a Porsche with a sawzall, actually. Nobody was paying him to build the "rough" AE86s that he built before the Porsches, they were simply purpose built as drift and race cars.
The first Porsche he built and raced in the late '90s, known as Stella Artois (picrel, the now-famous black/gold widebody started as this), was quite literally built with the entire purpose of being used in amateur racing when he moved from purely drifting to racing.
It wasn't until ~2011 or so when he brought two of his builds to SEMA in the US that the stancefags all seemingly fell in love with them, and since most outside of Japan had never seen or heard of them previous to that, that's why most just see him as some grifter that just mindlessly hacks up Porsches into "hellaflush" stance cars.
Hell, I've seen one or two in person in the US, and yeah, they were 'bagged' and didn't even have a rollcage, probably no engine modifications as well. Those are dumb as hell by comparison.
