I know how to drive in snow. All seasons work fine in Indiana but we dont get 300 inches a year like Michigan does. I also heard they suck at maintaining the roads, but I've never been further than Detroit

What vehicle? I'd hesitate to go that way without good ground clearance, Winter tires, emergency blankets and heat, and reliable backup communications. Plus that travel time is waaay optimistic for snow season.

Why are you taking the longer route?
Go further east through Illinois and Wisconsin.
Just go around Chicago, or dont, stop by and have a hot dog at the Wiener Circle, or visit Joong Boo Market, its right off highway. Get their dumplings before 7pm.
Swedetown area has a lots of packed snowe. No issues in no season tires.
Rent a fatbike. Be warned, they are demanding to ride.

Not OP but I would strongly prefer his chosen route. Wisconsin is pretty but driving around Chicago and Milwaukee is an absolute misery, while MI should be gorgeous and surrounded by nature. For an /o/tist it’s an easy choice.

You can go around both for an extra 30 minutes.
the bridge, and going down central MI is not that impressive. eastern UP is also full straight, long as fuck roads. youre gonna a hard time staying awake by the time you get tehre.
anyway, watch out for those thirsty seagulls. definitely dont let them know you have food.

houghton has about 2-3ft of snow, if you stick to main roads you should be fine and there are no major snow storms forecasted
it will probably be pretty difficult if you are doing it all in one day
with stops for food, traffic, and having to slow for conditions it will take much more than 12hrs and that can really fuck with your ability to concentrate
14hrs is the most I've ever done in one day and that's the absolute max I would ever attempt because after about the 10hr mark I really lost the ability to 100% concentrate on driving

Don't end your trip in Hancock/Houghton. Push the extra distance and make it up to Copper Harbor. I did a complete loop around Lake Michigan, with a detour to Copper Harbor, in September last year as the leaves started changing. Gorgeous.
But yes, you will have a miserable time without snow tires.

I-294 isn't too bad, neither is I-41 if you catch them outside of rush hour. I frequently (quarterly) take trips from central Wisconsin to Detroit, and I normally take the route going underneath Lake Michigan.

ive done the michigan part of this drive dozens of times. South of grayling is extraordinarily boring but with limited snow. Its pretty much always snowing from Grayling to Indian River (thats why they call it the snow belt). The UP varies widely but M-28 is almost always getting hit with lake effect squalls until you get further west of Newberry. They do a good job of keeping M-28 and US-41 generally clear, but the backroads can be nightmarish sheets of ice. Beware logging trucks, it can be hard to see them with the amount of snow they kick up.
I’ve never been a snow tires guy but I got stuck in my RWD with all seasons last winter climbing a grade. Snow tires are just an extra safety factor that can make your life easier.
I assume youre travelling for work? Do you not get a company car?

the main roads will have someone going by every few minutes
if you stray down some random road you do run the risk of not seeing someone for days
but cell signal is pretty ubiquitous and at the very worst you might need to walk to the top of a hill if you are really in the middle of fucking nowhere

I would, but my trips are business related. Taking the ferry ends up being more expensive and more time-consuming because it only leaves and arrives at certain hours of the day, which makes planning a bitch. I do plan to do it someday, though.

Very probably not. All-season radials have better grip in almost all conditions, even when they're halfway through their treadlife. Snow tires,. as such, are suited almost only to pristine powder around 6" to 12".

If the roads are actually open go all the way to copper harbor. Snow in the Keweenaw is difficult to predict expect random full blown whiteouts, rumble stops should keep you centered.
