I keep coming back to the idea of putting a cammed ls and tko inside of an r129
Ill probably pay a speed shop to handle the mounts and steering rack conversion and do the rest myself. Ive seen several half completed swaps on the internet but no running and driving examples that I know of. I used to have one so I already know they are incredibly well built even if complex.

Its retarded and expensive and will take me years to complete but at this point I know I wont see any other project through to completion because it doesnt tickle my balls the same way. What would you do?

Audi perfected the multilink rear and Toyota didn’t move out torsion beam until like 2019. Water pump replacement is annoying but also not actually a big deal.

Have to brake a little more and throttle into the corner to use your sport diff to oversteer. Skill issue.

It’s also pathetic becuase the precious Honda Civic understeers far worse and so does every Toyota and Lexus. Some out of date top gear meme from 2001 still rotting /o/s brain.

Thinking about trading in my Audi A3 1.6TDI for something a little more exciting but still practical, reliable and comfortable.

Seriously thinking about an M2 or an S5. Not a rich bitch so my budget is £35k for a used example.

Am I crazy? On paper the A3 is everything I should need so maybe I get a hatch like an S3 or 1 series instead. If there are any Merc equivalents I'd consider them but they don't seem to have a recent (>2016) offerings in the comfortable, practical coupe space.

Does the Audi have any issues or are you just bored with it? Maybe try a RWD 1 series with a big engine if you want something different but still practical and relatively affordable

German cars: first 100k is the driver's experience, second 100k is the mechanics experience.

Why are krauts so pathetic when it comes to making shit that lasts? I can only count on 1 hand machines they've made that actually lasts. Pretty sad.

Because they are too rarely threatened with lawsuits

In April 2009, a class action suit was filed against BMW in connection with HPFP failures. BMW settled the suit in June 2010. On 26 October 2010, following an ABC News story about HPFP failures, BMW announced a recall of vehicles with the pump in question from manufacturing years 2007–2010. The recall was applied to 130,000 cars, resulting in the replacement of the HPFP in approximately 40,000 of these cars. In the United States, the warranty period for the HPFP was increased to 10 years and 120,000 mi (190,000 km).On some cars, the HPFP was replaced multiple times without resolving the issue, potentially leading to the car being refunded under the Lemon Laws in some states. The High Pressure Fuel Pump issue caused BMW North America to extend the warranty for this pump to 10 years or 120,000 mi (190,000 km).The warranty period for the fuel injectors was also increased, to 10 years or 120,000 mi (190,000 km).An updated design for the fuel injectors was also introduced.Due to problems with rattling wastegates caused by premature bushing wear,BMW extended the warranty period for wastegate-related issues to 8 years or 82,000 mi (132,000 km).

These warranty extensions only apply to the United States.

Yeah just bored with it, it's very slow on the accelleration but otherwise is... fine? Boring, but really cheap to run and has been bulletproof for reliablility for the past 50k miles to the point where I feel i'll get another 100k out of it easily with the only real outlays past oil & MOT being the two timing belt changes. The tax is only £20/year which I still find insane.

I don't need anything top drawer so feel like a used S3 or S5 will give me a bit more excitement - just looking for a bit of giggle when i'm cornering and getting on the motorway really. I'm not going to track it and live rural so it has to have the clearance to deal with potholes and the occasional trip onto steeper, unpaved roads so the AWD is a plus there. The A3 can just about handle it, but some of the cars i've been reading about seem to love lowering the ground clearance which will fuck me up.

>>28829275
Yeah something like this looks perfect desu, i love the idea of the straight six and they don't look too expensive. How do they keep past 100k miles?

and yeah, guessing post 2016 M135i's with xdrive don't hit the same? How's their reliability compared to the N54s?

>>
>>28829265
The S5 is considerably an upgrade from an S3 or A3. Mostly aluminum, proper engine, proper Quattro, generally reliable, DCT. It’s also got a good aftermarket so you can get upgraded bushings and an easy and reliable track ready tube and build it out to be a very excellent track car.

The M2 is cheaper in build but has the M stuff so it’s more like an RS3. So expect creaks and rattles and a harsher ride.
The S line is more super sport backroad and daily. The M2 is closer to a track car that you can daily.
I’d also throw the M235i in there as it’s really close to an M2 save for a few suspension bits and the tube and some reinforced internals.

I’d feel really content with an S or RS or M or M235i and owning it for 5-10 years. You won’t really need to ‘upgrade’ to a better car. Just buy the one that matches what you want to do the best. All fi these can go to the track and be as fast as anything. The S5 probably has the best mods as they are all aimed at making it a serious car handling and power wise. The BMW’s have McDonald’s and less sound dampening and less quality but they do have better balance. I have tracked all of them and enjoyed them all for different reasons. If you won’t track at all the M235i and S5 are good looks. If you want to track a lot the M2 has the best computer system and cooling to make it easy.
The S5 is going to be fine out of the box until you get good at driving and then the nannies will annoy you bc they think you’re on a street. But you can poly bushings with low deflection on the double bones with the sport diff and have a GT3 lite suspension and the drive train is ready for track days without oil starvation or cooling issues.

I personally hate the S3, it’s good for track and fun to drive but it’s FWD, has a weak fuel pump, and overbearing Nannies. Easy skips
>>
>>28829503
Thanks for the write up, anon, good food for thought. I'm less interested in a track car so appreciate the breakdown - sounds the smoother ride of an S5 will be right on the money.

Believe it or not there are people out there that aren't racing heritage purists for their daily commute. I have no desire to daily a 1951 Jaguar C-type for my grocery shopping and run into work, because I wouldn't have a single intact disc in my spine left after a week.

>>
>>28829710
Then I think an S5 or M235i or M440i would be right what you want. They’re tuned for the street and to be smooth on the street. I personally like the S5 the best becuase it’s a better package with better materials objectively. The M440i has the inline 6 which is very good and reliable but the interior is cheaper and it has the Macpherson struts.

What do we actually think of the 992 as a car, bias aside?

I don’t like the DRL style, I think it’s a little big, I don’t like that they only build the expensive ones, it’s over priced, it’s probably the second ugliest 911 ever after the 996, it’s underpowered like the prelude and overpriced.
I just feel like it’s not that compelling unless you have some love for 911 and want a new one. If all the 911s were available new and with similar performance and safety I don’t think it would necessarily hold up well. I’m also annoyed because it’s easily the most overpriced parts of repair car in the history of the brand on top of the very complex and low volume hybrid shit they’re pushing.
This is to say it’s a rich fag car and not really a car persons car. For that reason I don’t like it and sadly have little desire to get one. I say this as a Porsche fag. Really let down by Porsche in the 2020s. The Panamera and maybe the 718 are the only cars worth buying imo and they’re both flawed by weight in the Pan and cheapness in the 718.
As far as competition I like the M4 despite it being hideous. I like the RS5 despite it being underpowered.
Dunno. These cars are just not great like they used to be.

>>
>>28827972
Ill follow up with this and maybe spur some actual car discussion.
My far more reasonable alternative to this project is an LS swapped e39 touring.
The e39 has enough support I could theoretically complete the entire swap in my garage only needing to outsource stuff like exhaust work and a driveshaft. Everything from mounts to plug and play harnesses are available for the platform. It will be far cheaper as well.
The r129 is just the best looking 2 door available to a mortal like me, but the complexity and lack of support makes it a nightmare to try to plan a build around. It seems daunting in a scary way because its so rare to see completed examples. My heart says r129, but my brain says the e39 is the way to go.
And yeah they're very different cars, clearly, but im at the point where i know the only project ill keep long term is one i build myself. That said im not a fabricator and I dont want to have a hackjob in my hands either.

Too bad the beancounters always have to go and ruin it, leaving the PROFESSIONALE racing teams to put it back to how it was designed

Peregrine Racing is just Carbahn's racing team

Westphal, McAlister Back in CarBahn With Peregrine BMW ...
CarBahn Motorsports and Peregrine Racing are deeply intertwined partners in professional motorsport, operating as "CarBahn with Peregrine Racing," a single, championship-contending team that fields cars in IMSA series, leveraging CarBahn's engineering expertise (especially with BMWs) and Peregrine's racing operations and driver talent to compete in high-level GT4 and GT3 classes, demonstrating a "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" ethos for performance vehicles.
Key Aspects of Their Relationship:
Unified Team Name: They race under the combined banner "CarBahn with Peregrine Racing," showcasing a complete integration, as seen with their 2026 lineup announcement.
Shared Founders/Vision: The partnership was forged by friends and MIT alumni Mark Siegel (Peregrine) and Sameer Gandhi, working with Steve Dinan (CarBahn) to combine business acumen with engineering prowess.
Technical & Engineering Synergy: CarBahn provides high-performance tuning and engineering, applying their knowledge from BMWs and other platforms to the race cars, while Peregrine focuses on the racing side, making it a comprehensive operation.
Competition & Success: They field cars (like BMW M4 GT4s and previously Porsches/Audis) in IMSA's Michelin Pilot Challenge and other series, achieving wins and championship contention.
Marketing & Brand Alignment: The racing efforts directly promote CarBahn's automotive tuning services, linking race success to their consumer performance products, according to this article.
In essence, they are not separate entities competing against each other but rather a single, powerful racing team built on a strong, collaborative partnership.

Let me guess, another "differently successful" cooperation with the Chinese?

"How Chinese Officials Hijacked Steve Saleen's Company - A joint venture applied to Beijing for patents on 510 of my designs, without notifying or crediting him."

This is why the US needs to quit fucking around and unify the EU against China. They don’t practice business in a way that’s ethical by western standards and the sheer size of their market means we risk the business climate adopting more Chinese values and who wants to live like that
>>
>>28831241
And who would expect honesty from these fraudsters?
>>
>>28831278

I blame Versailles for breaking up the colonial efforts desu. Unified China is not a thing but Han domination and subjugation of the continent. They’re a vile race

Thinking about buying a Cayman S.

I wouldn't get that one specifically; the owner put a lift-kit on it to get In-N-Out easier
>>

Get it. You won't regret it. You may want a 911 later though.

fine with me? Looks a little better that way anyway

>>28831866
im priced out of 911s but don't necessarily like how they look more. only thing is I don't have a garage and storing a car like outside seems ridiculous.
>>
>>28831990
You can’t buy a perfect Porsche anyway. Panamera is fat. Gayman is low power and McDonald’s. Carrera is fat, unbalanced and McDonald’s.

Bros should I buy this? 500SE Britbong import (no emissions slop). Kind of a boring colour tho. Ostensibly nothing wrong with it. seller wants 5500 USD

It’s got soul. I had a 300 E class from the era and loved it wish I kept it

>>28832022
I think the standard ones are pretty cool. I don't like the slits they're giving all the cars though.

>>28832031
I'm sorely tempted hey. Just worried about being too low IQ to fuel injection diagnose issues on it, although it seems to be working fine atm. I'll go check it out at least.

Alternator gasket?

Yep, n62 engines have a gasket on the alternator bracket. Stupid design. A literal hole in the side of the engine.

My next car. Does anyone own one? It seems like the least retarded EV out there too.
>>
>>28832016
yeah that's what I was thinking but I also don't want to have to wait until I buy a house to drive the car I want.. does seem like too much of a liability without a garage though imo

Most people consider the iX3 the first good EV from BMW btw. I’m referring to battery tech
>>
>>28832178
You mean the 2026 one? Yeah nobody has actually owned one yet. We don't know if it will have lots of baby diseases like new EV platforms and infotainment systems tend to do. Meanwhile i4 has been out for years and has a remarkable reliability and durability to it. I think I'd rathee get the tried and true than the next hype-mobile that may very well turn into a software nightmare five weeks in.
>>
>>28832199
Those bullshits just have too many dealbreakers: they're way too ugly to even consider driving in the first place, they're slow as fuck, and they have gay eps and ipad dashes
>>
>>28832118
That's fair. Its not so bad if you don't park under trees. There's a bunch of oak trees on my property so if it's not garaged, there's so many caskins that's hard to clean off and the acorns that drop will dent body panels.
