I've owned the sedan version for about 8 years now; it's a very reasonable daily econobox. Always regretted not getting the hatch, so I imagine your experience will be even better.
Parts are cheap, at least in the states. This was during the era where Mazda and Ford were in bed together, so random things like the rear suspension will have FoMoCo stamped on them, which is slightly neat. Mine's been dead reliable, outside a fuel pump which was my own fault for constantly running close to empty.
Not a sportscar by any means, and don't expect anything special in the handling department, but if you need a cheap reliable daily that's slightly more interesting than a corolla or whatever of the same vintage, it'll be a fine choice.

The 2.0 has more power and uses the same amount of fuel
