The 4Runner has been successful and beloved for over 20 years, why does it have literally no competition
>bronco/wrangler
Too much sport not enough utility. Not everyone wants to remove half their body panels
>grand cherokee/explorer
Opposite problem, not enough sport. Basically just awd crossovers but at least the engine is turned the right way

I'm old and would rather have a luxury mom crossover.

the bronco and wrangler are literally its competition, you moron
>Too much sport not enough utility. Not everyone wants to remove half their body panels
yeah? that doesn't make them not competitors to the 4runner

I disagree with you on the bronco. It's definitely more sport, but it still has utility. I agree most of them are driven by women who will never take it off the pavement, but it's still a very capable offroad vehicle.
I also disagree on the cherokee. I have a friend that has one. They're pretty sporty in every aspect aside from body styling. They go pretty fast. I mean they make a trackhawk trim of the Jeep GC ffs.
I guess the blazer used to be in this market? Not the new one, the old one. The one that was basically a shortened suburban.

multiple companies are racing to make an offroady small suv
I think mercedes is making a mini g class
vw has a scout project
ford HAS an everest suv that they sell in australia that's a ford ranger with an suv cab like a 4runner but they refuse to invest in american production even tho it seems relatively beloved down under
im pretty sure kia is working towards making something more offroady as well

the 6 cyl one can be had in the "lexus gx" version of the 4runner
but I think its had some manufacturing issues and the one with the hybrid uses up a lot of trunk space esp given the solid axle

its too small to be practical and it ONLY comes in softtop/hardtop convertible they need a larger, non convertible version it would sell better

Ford could sell a direct competitor with the Everest but they don't want to cannibalize Bronco sales in the US. the Xterra is coming back allegedly though. it boggles my mind why GM doesn't have a Colorado based SUV, but it could be that they just prioritize the Tahoe/Yukon.

Name a V6 SUV that gets better MPG than a 4 Runner?
>All of them.

SUV's have become a pretty niche market. If you got a family with 1-2 kids and don't need a third row or a covered area to haul a dog then you're a lot better off going with a pickup truck. They give you a lot more bang for your buck than a SUV and have way more powertrain options. The same goes if you're single or a DINK and want a SUV. While it seems easy to slap a SUV body on a Colorado or a Ranger it's actually expensive as fuck to do in the real world and especially the North American market. So you can't blame manufacturers for not taking the plunge on something that might sell 50k units a year in a good year.
