Somehow drove it 100,000 mile, 8 years and no car payment. 226K miles now and needs a rear diff rebuild and new wheel bearings. My mechanic says it's over. Too much rust and repairs. I think he might be right.

New stage of life, getting married, might need something more practical, more space for kiddos and dog, but I hate to lose the adventure mobile.

Lexus GX? Tundra w/ a crew cab? Mini van? Is the adventure over?

did that mechanic also offer you 500 bucks for the truck? Ya know, just to take the burden off your hands

Naw, I trust the guy in general. Going to get a second and third opinion next week. Hate to give up on er. Looking on FB marketplace on all the soulless silver mid size SUVs is depressing.

GMT800 Suburban is always the answer.

Unfortunately don't got a picture of the diff fluid, but mechanic said it was full of metal.

Anon, i say this as a midwesterner, that's pretty bad. If that chunk on the right is structural (pic rel) you've at least got some welding to do.
Looks like half of that would come off if you kicked it.

Actually I think that's the exhaust pipe. Let me get a better pick. Exhaust pipe is basically gone

post pics of the actual structure, frame rails, strut towers, etc
if the most exposed bits look like this I find it hard to believe it's totally unsalvageable

This is what you were seeing -- not the frame, the exhaust pipe is rotten, should just chop it off.
>>
>>28829956
I guess unsalvageable isn't the debate -- it's "worth it" or not. The engine has zero issues and could go anouther 100K, but at what cost for the suspension / driveline.
>>
>>28830750
probably not worth it to pay a mechanic to do it, but a new diff and some wheel bearings on their own aren't crazy

Are you really driving around with 2 spares? The weight ruins the performance.

If you like the truck the value's there to replace the suspension. People give up on good cars too soon, hesitant to "put more than the car is worth" into it when the sale value does not represent its actual economic value. A new engine and a new suspension for $8000 on good bones will give you more than $8000 will generally buy you on the used market.

But minivans are also great.

I see rustier pieces of shit doing 90 down the freeway daily. if you're attached to the truck just fix it with a different mechanic

These aren’t that difficult or expensive, why not just fix it?
>>
>>28829663
Surprising the spare is still there.
What does the frame look like right in front of the rear wheels? That's where most of the corrosion occurs from the salt slushee getting stuck inside.
>>
>>28830785
Just 1 spare. I do have a soft spot for the truck. Maybe I can keep it and tinker with it this summer, maybe I could learn to replace the bearing and diff myself.

Lexus GX also look pretty sweet for a family + camping offroad car. An odyssey or sienna if the good lord affords me enough children.

Lexus or Toyota only

Listen up dipshit, because I've been down this road before and I've been where you are and I am where you're going, plus or minus your preferred vehicle.

>Be me
>14
>Get first car
>Shitty, rusting 735i from the 1980s.
>Love it unironically
>Many memories made.
>Go to college. It is sold by my dad while I'm gone because unreliable
>Graduate
>Find old car on craigslist, buy it back
>FFW I am a lawyer, have girlfriend who was two kids.
>735i is rusting badly, and parts I need are hard to come by.
>Buy 2003 760Li
>"Needs nothing" said the muslim seller
>Needed everything
>Deplete my savings trying to fix it, give up
>Go through a bunch of different cars over the next three years
>Settle on a Mitsuoka (look it up, I'm fucking weird I know)
>Reliable, interesting, but not my car
>FFW now
>bored of the Mitsuoka
>Saw another 80s 735i for sale
>$3000 obo
>Most perfect example of an e32 I have ever seen
>Seller takes my $2500 offer, and so I buy it
>For the first time in years I feel like myself
>It's my car.
>Everything is right in the world

The moral of this story is don't trust the muslims. And also, if you're happy with what you have, keep it that way. If the truck is done, replace it with another. Axles and bearings are cheaper than a Lexus GX or a new Tundra. A replacement Taco is cheaper too. Maybe find a four-door Taco. If it's made you happy for this long, just get another one that is more sustainable.
