There's no way you could get good leverage or grip on it in bad conditions, emergencies or if the door is stuck. my uneducated guess is that most went with giant ones like that so they have another "easy" design part to replace with with the next car they release.
you see, they're always looking to keep the balance between updating cars to provide something people want to update to but not make it too "perfect" so there's no leeway anymore for future updates.
if the door handles are butt ugly it's easy to replace them with le modern flush hidden handle they think customers will love in comparison.
