Say, for context, that you live in rural area central Europe, you are of an able bodied age like late 20s to mid 30s and of 300 to 600k € net worth, and want to enter some form of motorsport. The paths that make sense in this region are either rally, hill climbs (where you'd employ the same tricks as in rally so there is no paragraph for it) or superbike racing.

Rally:
Your end goal is to be competitive in the national championship and FIA European Rally Trophy for events where they merge.
You build a rally car in the Proto/N5 class with custom ECU programming for about 100.000 € and can possibly compete for the overall victory versus semi pro R5 racers.
You attend hill climbs for training, perform figure 8's trough hay bales at your rural farm or small estate, kart race and sim race. All rally's in this region are 100 percent tarmac anyway, so you only need one configuration. You drive the car to events, only needing a codriver and one helper friend with car to compete.

Superbike:
Your end goal is to be competitive in Alpe Adria Superbike.
You also attend your national championship for practice and the occasional street race like Horice.
Your superbike goes over 300kph in races and costs around 40.000€.
Your main form of training all year round in this region will be motocross. You likely have enough space for a one lane track at home and you regularily attend your local outdoors track.
You preconfigure the suspension settings at home and only need 1 to 2 helper friends to change tires during a weekend.

Which you choose? 2 wheels or 4 wheels, if you had affinity for both?

Which of these, corresponding to respective described goals is harder mechanically/requires more skill - to be competitive in Alpe Adria Superbike or in Rally at slightly below ERC level? Which has better community?

Getting into motorsports as a late 20s/mid 30s you'll never be competitive in such higher level series. There's plenty of more grassroots stuff to participate in at a much lower cost as well.

not really. i would in both cases compete mostly against semi pro or amateur racers that are 40+ years old with a company or auto shop that they manage during the day. my remote style work and rural environment would allow me to get way more seat time than them.
in alpe adria superbike, there are occasional regional idm and ewc racers, who are young, professional and were once on the redbull rookies cup or somewhere on the road to motogp, that go there to whoop everyone for practice, but they usually attend only their home round, so they aren't a championship threat.
I think you're coming from a North American perscpective. But in my region, i reckon i could get more seat time than my championship rivals no matter if i chose 2 or 4 wheels.
As said, if I went for superbike, i could ride motocross every day, even during the winter, and I am probably more fit than most of them and likely have a more expensive bike than them, too.
As for rally, the disctances here are so small that given the car's road legality, and that I would own it, I could regularily do hill climbs and track days for testing, without a trailer, and do figure 8's trough hay bales at home.

Navigation rally is what it says on the tin, you get from a to b to z with a route map and a watch.

Someone responded and outlined what it costs in keeping the thing race ready and it basically costs more than the entire post tax wage of even the best paid professions in society

You don’t need to be stinking rich but you should be independently wealthy which that isn’t. You need tens of thousands of Euros a year to spend on it
