Welcome to 4chan's Offroad General - where high ground clearance meets low IQ. If it hasn't rolled over yet, you aren't trying hard enough. Post your 4x4 trucks and SUVs. This thread is for the guys who actually leave the pavement and have the broken CV axles to prove it.

Haven't gone in a while. I did learn my truck can hold 31 bags of wet bark and a bag of rocks. With some room for more. Was still off the bumpstops. I should probably wash it at some point. The dirt protects the wax which protects the paint.

because every humvee you can buy has been put through hell and back by a bunch of 18-25 year olds that don't give a single fuck about them and reached a point where the federal government has decided they're not economically viable to keep running

what bumper is that? what winch do you have with it?

still wondering if i should install my lift kit this weekend

my rear spring hangers still havent shipped

so i could do the front
or
i could do the front and rear and reuse the factory ubolts then when the hangers come in, take them off and install the ubolt flips and rear hangers
decisions decisions
>>
>>28909613
Winch is a warn 10klb VR Evo with synthetic rope.
Bumper is a warn 100044 semi hidden kit.
It installed nicely and isn't obvious unless you love for it. I went with synthetic rope to save weight and since the rope is buried in the bumper it doesn't see sunlight unless I pull the rope out. I also put in a relay so the winch isn't on unless I flip a switch. It has a wireless remote so I wasn't sure if they synced them to the winch or if it would be like old RC cars with the cross talk interfering with each other.

UPDATES:
Got one coilover installed today
i failed to measure hub to fender, so i really wont know how much lift i have
i will say i had to step on the LCA with pretty much all my weight to get the new coilover in the lower hole. surprised me a little.

anyway, i had two casualties, i punctured my hub cap thingie with a screwdriver because im a retard. i might want to get another one, or ill probably just pick up jb weld or rtv or something

i also maybe fucked up my tierod end. couldnt get the fucker off, and i was beating on it with the castle nut on because i didnt want to fuck up the threads, and fucked up the castle nut instead, necause im a retard. so now theres some random flared nut on it, with some blue locktite, @80ft lbs. i should probably at least get another castle nut, what do you guys think of this tierod?

i also did the needle replacement on my front CV and changed the seal.

tomorrow i will finish the front, and think about doing the rear, even tho i dont have my rear spring hangers yet. debating weather i should do that or not.

I would get a replacement castle nut and a fresh cotter pin.
>>
>>28910494
i just ordered 2 new mevotech tie rod ends. $80. fuck it, might as well replace both before i get an alignment, and then that one tierod start getting slack in it soon down the road.
at least this one is grease-able
they make these tierod sleeves, theyre like 100 bucks tho. seems like a nice upgrade, but im not sure if i need them, im only running 33s.

What 4x4 is worth buying outright? I got 8k USD
>>
>>28913299
Just buy an S10 blazer for like $2k. Harbor freight winch for another $500. Aftermarket options for LSD or locker.
>>
>>28910373
I personally wouldnt have mounted the reservoir like that.
I would have flipped it and ran the hose along the top of the fender well above everything.
>>
>>28913391
thats the correct way to mount it
i understand where youre coming from, but that top fitting doesnt swivel and the last thing you want to do it unscrew it and let all the juicy gassy goodness out

i did get done with my lift saturday night
it is sooo much better to ride on, its not even funny
it is so good
but
i have driveline vibration now
i have measured all my angles, and i think i know how to fix it

toyota has a two piece driveshaft which complicates things a bit

a few things: there should be no more that 3* of difference in between the yoke and ujoints, ans there should be no more that .5* between all the working angles
you find your working angles by measuring the yottom of each yoke, then subtract them. Spin the youke off the tcase flat, measure that. Then spin the driveline until the ujoint attached to that yoke is flat, measure that. Then subtract the numbers, and you have your working angle. Do that for each connection, in my case I have 3.
the first joint off the tcase was like, 3.1, the one off the carrier bearing was like 3.4, but the one headed into rear axle is like 7.1. That one is the problem child. The solution, I hope/think, is to install a 4* shim under the axles to bring doen that 7.1 to about 3ish, which makes all 3 angles close to .5* of each other, hopefully solving my issue. I might have to monkey around with the carrier bearing and stack some washers under it, but that will be nbd.
i have a 4* shim and longer bolt kit on the way, along with some ubolts. I have to clamp up the springs, take the middle bolt out, and install a longer middle bolt, then put the shim in, and ubolt everything back together. Super not looking forward to that, but it probably wont take too long, and it needs to be done.

tires and rims are ready to be mounted, hopefully i can do that this saturday, maybe friday if i get off work early.
might let them do the tierod ends so i dont have to fuck with it. Ill see if they will do a high caster alignment also
>>
>>28910373
i actually forgot to put the covers behind the resi, on that side and had to take it back off and install it again.
and i forgot to install the anti sway bar also

prerunners are 2wd, and they have plenty of fun
lockers are great, unless youre really getting into hairy stuff, you can do a lot with 2wd and a locker.
look into helical LSD, about half the cost of a full locker, and they are very useful. Theyre better in the rear, because if you get a wheel off the ground, you can ride your brake a bit to get them to lock. Also, try a bit of your handbrake, it might evenly distribute the torque next time you start spinning.

locker is literally essential for any actual offroading. essential. from what ive seen on this board it's mostly larping overlanders. 2wd with locker will shit all over a stock 4wd, it's incomparable.

I'm thinking about buying a set of these for my AWD Suzuki Swift. Is 175 too narrow for 6" wide wheels? I'm thinking about debeading risk when I air down for sand. Should I even bother airing down a tire that's so stiff it's basically a run-flat? Will I hate my life driving with these tires?

Dude.
Those aren't gas charged shocks.
Thats an oil reservoir.
The shock uses valves.
The dampening effect is from the oils limited ability to move through the valves.

if its prone to overheating, i would probably try to find a nice 3 core radiator for it. since its an auto, im assuming it has a tranny cooler built in. you can probably find a generic one that would fit the dimensions, or just find a 3 core with out cooler, and fab up a separate tranny cooler

Electronic rearview is great, you get the immediate rear perspective of the car and can see way more behind you. You can also turn it off and it’s a normal mirror. Why does this make you seethe so much?

Thanks, it’s the Underground color with the squared headlights which I think theyre discontinuing this year. Very happy with it, it has all the factory features I wanted. I will still add skid plates, maybe rock rails and a roof rack

i have a 2010 ford ranger sport 4x4. I want to get a LSD, but i cant pin down the exact one i need. Seems like I could either have 28 spline or 31 spline. Do I need to take the diff cover off and count or what? I get mixed answers from ai vin lookups.
>>
>>28915382
apparently, its super easy to put 35s on the new LC and Tacomas. Not so easy at all with 3rd tacomas.
they do make 35x10.5 c rated toyos, or maybe just 285/70 or 75s would look pretty dang good on that truck

getting tires and rims put on tomorrow, tierods came in, and the stupid shim that may not be right is showing up on saturday if the government workers at usps dont fuck me

Theres a tag on the diff housing with a part number you can cross reference.
They dont always get put back on older vehicles but yours is most likely still there.
>>
>>28915432
I looked but couldnt find a tag. I will look again and see if I can find anything.
>>
>>28915481
Its most likely a 28 spline, vast majority of 8.8 rangers came with 28s
>>
>>28915521
Almost always.
Unfortunately anon has a Sport 4x4 which is the highest trim level so if anything DID have a 31, that would be it.
You used to be able to tell by the hub flange but I think that's changed.

This might help.
Tl:dr
31 spline used for torsen.
Open and friction plate style lsd got the 28

This looks like a perfect setup. Might go to the same garage and say “do it again”
>>
>>28915686
Perspective can cause pics to be misleading but id say thats a pretty drastic taper so safe to assume small bearing/28 spline.
>>

>>
>>28915735
i just realized you have 18s. he has ridge grapplers on that build. looking at the toyo page, theyre probably 285/75, which is a 35" e rated tire, or maybe 285/70 which is a 34. not sure if youre going to find a true pizza cutter which is like 255 in a larger than 33 size

i would be very hesitant to get that camberg ucas. It has heim joints in the rear, which are great. But they use a larger ball up front, which in theory is a good idea. But any ball joints weakness is the bolt that actually goes through the spindle. So big deal it has a bigger ball. Forged is really not needed either, and 2k for ucas is a bit much imo.

i did accutune, they valve the shocks to whatever youre doing. theyre in socal down there somewhere.
>>
I wanted to see an overlook today and was told by the ranger it was theoretically drivable but it is mainly used by ATVs but the second I got on the dedicated road for it there was that extra thick chunky gravel that I hate so much, not the biggest rocks in a road ive ever seen, but top 10, went about 1/2 a mile and turned around
would have been maybe 30-40 minutes more going 8 mph crawling to avoid busting my tires open otherwise
I got all terrain tires but they are at highway pressure and I haven't bothered to get a system to lower them for rough roads and really this wouldn't have been worth it and the view wasn't that amazing judging from pictures but I still was disappointed my "off road" kia couldn't do it, I mean maybe it could have but im a wussy.

It did ok otherwise on the gravel roads with the all terrains. I got chunkier ones than it came with (old: bf goodrich geodrive, new: falken wildpeak at4w)
the steering is still slop and really unconfident on loose gravel that's probably the worst part but that's not so much the tires, I don't lose grip its just hard to feel where the car is through the wheel

Thanks for the lore drop. Im coming off of a 2008 2 wheel drive Ranger, driven since 2007 and everywhere offroad I can. >>
>>28915862
ive never driven a trugg so I can't really say for sure, but it seems the main issues are how numb the steering is and how it jiggles a bit over loose gravel esp. on an incline, you just can't feel where the wheel is placed and its not confidence inducing

and the coil springs feel like they barely absorb bumps at all
if the stupid road was just normal dirt instead of GIANT FUCKING ROCKS I could have done it

I see broncos on the road all the time and they look way less spacious and I bet the ride and steering are even worse

Any XJs I've seen for sale are either RWD, 400k miles, roached the fuck out, "sin titulo," $6k+, or some combination of those. And I live in central FL where there are tons of them and they haven't suffered from being in the rust belt. I bought one that's pretty clapped for $2k a few years back and considered it a good deal though it's the Cherokee of Theseus at this point.
