E46 has a notoriously shit autotragic gearbox. Only 5 ratios, too far apart and made of glass. If you were unlucky enough you could get a fucking GM unit in your ultimate driving machine.
Only get an auto BMW if it's a ZF8, preferably first gen since they were overbuilt as fuck or if it's swapped from a diesel.
