How do I become one of them rangers like Aragorn?
Reading The Lord of the Rings some of my favorite parts are the ones with Strider's show of skill.
I love how he is completely aware of his surroundings and is able to instantly read footprints and use herbs and quickly make himself and his companions unseen and escape danger. At times he seemed more in tune with nature than even Legolas.
I have seen quite a few threads on here of people being scared of the dark and I feel like if one had good old Strider's skill and knowledge he wouldn't be afraid no more.
Aragorn wouldn't be startled in the middle of the forest by some bear, he would know about that mountain lion following him for the last 2 miles. He wouldn t get poisoned by some mushroom or die of hunger because he knows what is good and what is bad to eat. Strider wouldn't get lost in the forest since he has been drawing a 3d map in his head this entire time.
How do I become more like Aragorn, obviously he has had 80 years of experience but what books would you recommend and things to do in the forest to become a little more like him

Nu-/out/ redditors malding over a poorly worded but good question as usual pretending that this isnt just a kazakhstanian under-water spearfishing forum instead of their personal little circlejerk safe-space for their epic banter thats too edgy for reddit.

Take a basic hunter safety course and read up on animal tracking. You'll pick up the print identification skills on the scouting season.
>Hed recognize a mountain lion tracking him for 2 miles
Incredibly unlikely. They're real sneaky and would have no reason to cross in front of someone they're hunting. Thankfully they're not aggressive and super skittish so theyre not much if a threat desu despite being larger than leopards. Honestly if they had a different temperament they would've been hunted to extinction.
>Identifying herbs
This one is really hard. There's a lot of good literature on the subject but searching wild edibles + your area is the way. I recommend linking up with some botany groups in your area since a lot of plants look really similar and can kill you quick.
So basically tldr, be a botanist that hunts. It's really that simple/obtainable honestly.

For identifying plants. The best answer is just to get one of those "identifying x in" type books. It's just much nicer and succinct. There are these dictionary books that are meant to broadly key a shitton of plant species, but once you start doing that you realize that nature is constantly raping and shitting out new species everyday so there is little point. Also weighs a tons. Just learn about the useful plants, then keep one book mushroom, herbs, geology etc.

Practice make perfect. But people do things because it is necessary for their survival. Maybe in the medieval times or in the Asian steppes someone would know how to hunt and forage, but in the modern world people dont need to learn these skills to survive

Part of the character that isn't really explained in lotr is that he is part divine blood which gives him magical strength endurance senses etc. He is also nearly a century old, spent his entire life training in elven martial arts when he wasn't solo'ing mythical creatures and armies of orcs, and has god approved plot armor.
>For mere mortals a good place to start would be bird watching.

>My friend, try focusing on finding depth in your own life and interests instead of worrying about what others are doing, that kind of talk makes you sound insecure and shallow
He's not American. Americans wear hats while sitting indoors, despite being in a warm room with a roof. They spend their lives never seeing the irony of this, or irony of much in general. You wear white socks. Every man seems to wear a cap with a picture on it, and a t-shirt with another slogan on it, all the time.
In other words, you are a populous with a propensity to self-invent but without necessarily having the self-awareness needed to do so with a sense of maturity. These are the observations of a person without glow in the dark teeth and who does not wear a hat indoors, for what they are worth.

I've told this story before to /out/ before.
but when I used to read the Hobbit/LOTR books almost yearly, and I did a lot of hiking, on week-long backpacking trips into deeply forested mountains, I would pretend I was Aragorn, on some long mission traveling deftly through the vast expanse of wild-lands. outpacing bands of orc and goblin alike with my steadfast pace.
My abilities in maneuvering through the landscape, were reinforced by my skills in woodcraft and scouting.
Sometimes I'd pretend I was of the Elven race, and ,my movements were light and nearly silent as I traveled smoothly, quickly and tirelessly across the land and through the deep woodland forests.
the trees were my allies, the rivers and streams were my lifeblood, the wind through the trees, the fresh woodspice and flower scented air was my breath of life, the great mountains were my fortress, the high ridges and peaks were my watchtowers, the sun, moon and stars were my guiding beacons.
nothing better than a meal up in the backcountry, with a fresh coffee or tea and a few chapters of a good book before pressing on

wouldn't you just
>learn how to use a bow an arrow
>learn basic hunting, trapping, tracking skills
>know how to build shelter
basically just grow your hair out for a year and get it layered, grow some facial scruff, know how to use a bow and enough survival skills to not die and learn how to ride a horse. This is basically any outdoorsman who has done it for enough time, imagine if that luke bloke from outdoorboys was handsome and thats aragorn.
short: go outside

Regarding plant identification, there's a really nice app called Pl@ntNet which has a hude database of pictures to help you ID plants by taking pictures. It's not a surefire method but it can help narrow it down to 2 or 3 options that you will learn to ID yourself using texture, smell, observing the surroundings (not all plants thrive in the same conditions) etc
The best method to learn botany is to track the interesting plants you encounter by
>taking pics (drawing them is better but not everyone can be bothered)
>writing the coordinates and a description of the site where it was found (surrounding plants, soil texture, distance to closest treaded path, distance to water stream, canopy structure, seasonality...)
>reading about the plant and its properties
>recognizing its habitat elsewhere and looking for it
I would assume half the board is familiar with picrel's channel, it's a good way to start stridermaxxing

The most realistic/cost efficient method would be van life(with a fridge to pack up lots of food, and water barrels to collect water). You need to spend a lot of time inawoods without worrying about rent or running out of food in 3 days etc and become an autodidact through practice trial and error. Thats my plan anyways.
