I have been hiking at a cool spot for the past few months because it has lots of animals. I usually see javalina, coyote, coatis, and like 20 different species of birds. Unfortunately yesterday I ran into a mountain lion on the trail. I thought it was a coati going up a tree but it was actually a damn lion. I looked it up and the area is apparently filled with them. Is bear spray enough to deter them or should I start bringing a gun instead?

Fortunately cougars will just break your neck which will kill you instantly. You won't even know its about to happen, all of a sudden a cougar will just tackle you to the ground and then you're dead.

I believe Jaguars are the only big cat that attacks you head on, then crushes your skull with it's teeth, which is fucking metal. Fortunately these are mountain lions, unless they are starved you're too big for prey. I used to smoke jump in Northern Canada, sometimes you'd really be out there with nature, mate of mine out there used to keep a strobing bike light on his back in the event of a sneak attack. Every time we got a new recruit which was often they would ask and he would explain, and we would spend 45 minutes ripping him to pieces with new insults. Till one day we were hiking to an exfil point, fucking mountain lion runs up on the guy and jumps, we all turn around in time to see the fucking thing jump 8 feet straight up in the air then bug out and run to the woods. I'm 41 now, and I still hike to this day with a bike light on my back, never been attached by a mountain lion. If you that worried OP spend 8 dollars.

Can someone give me an answer that isn't some retarded larp? Cougars weigh like 80lbs on average. I just fucking saw one so they aren't invisible stealth masters killers like you are all saying. There are literally like 20 videos of people being cornered or charged, not ambushed. Just tell me if I should bring my gun or my bear spray.

As already said >>2852883 they've been there before and you didn't see them. I DID NOT say they were super ninjas waiting to kill you, you sperged and read that in. I clearly stated, they don't see you as food, so just make noise and you won't have an encounter. They don't want to encounter you any more than you want to encounter them. You don't need spray or a gun.
> There are literally like 20 videos of people being cornered or charged
You are retarded. You've seen one, maybe two videos 20 times, not 20 videos they all involve cubs and a mama mlion acting aggressive to move the person away from their cubs. If you've seen one video not involving cubs, prove it. If you've seen one encounter that ended in an actual attack, prove it.. MAKE NOISE and they will steer clear of you. Stop being a sperg.

>Cougars weigh like 80lbs on average.
Typical Weight Ranges:
Males: 115 - 220 lbs (52 - 100 kg).
Females: 64 - 141 lbs (29 - 64 kg).
Looks like they're the same weight as people, but they have 18 claws and sharp, pointy teeth and wild animal sensibilities.

If it's a hobby you see yourself doing lots of, I'd recommend getting used to carrying a gun. This was my first year of hunting and I've heard so many stories of shit going south real fast. Huge dude climbing out of his tree stand had a cougar sprint at him as soon as he was on the ground. Dumped it with a quick shot and has the picture to prove it. On top of many stories from others about bears, bull and buck charges. Better off carrying. If you aren't hunting a short 12 gauge is cheap fast and sufficient.

I've caught dozens of mountain lions on my trail cams. I've heard them calling in the distance. I've never seen one IRL. I have a knife on me. But it's more for cutting through vines and thin branches than personal protection. I'm not at all concerned with encountering a mountain lion. You're 100x more likely to be injured in a vehicle accident than you are to encounter much less have be attacked by a mountain lion.
Old picture, be the only one I have with myself for scale(reply)

Bring your gun. Not for cougars, but in case you run into drug traffickers. Not all the drug mules carry guns, typically just one or two coyotes(guides). They will be the ones with the best boots and packs. Everyone else will just be wearing Walmart tier shoes/boots.

Get stronger faggot.

90% of lions you'll never see
90% of the ones you see will run away if you make a loud noise
90% of the ones who aren't scared off will bluff charge you away from their food/cubs
If by chance you meet one that's actually hunting you bear spray would probably do the job, although I'm not aware of any cases of it actually being used. For a handgun 9mm would be fine but I don't think it's worth the weight/inconvenience
>>2856237
I'm alone on remote parts of the border with hella trafficking like once a week. The guias are sometimes armed but don't fuck with gringos as a rule. Probably less dangerous to your average hiker than a mountain lion.

Let's see
Mountain lions
>the last suspected fatal encounter in Colorado was in 1999, when a 3-year-old boy disappeared in the wilderness and his tattered clothes were found more than three years later.
Traffickers
>at least 1,700 deaths and nearly 2,000 missing persons in Sinaloa state alone within the last year.
Stop sucking cartel cock, you faggot

>larp
Literally no you. You saw it cause it wasn't hunting you. And it probably won't hunt you. Just tape on some eyes or bring the gun cause you're a pussy.
>inb4 nuh uh
I bring my gun cause I like playing cowboy. We are not the same.

>just trust the nice murderous drug dealers, they won't kill you if they dont want to
You are defending literal cartel murderers
Do you realize that
Youre defending the honor of the worst human scum in existence
Why
Just to make some bullshit nonsensical point about racism? Immigrants? What liberal talking point are you working on right now?
FUCK
YOU
>>
>>2856370
I'm not defending anything you raging homosexual. I'd smear every last one of those scum off the Earth with the push of a button if you gave me the chance.
What I AM saying is if you're in a state of heightened paranoia about them just because you're going /out/ in the desert you need to stop role-playing on 4chan and actually GO /out/.

1000 women go missing every year due to horny Mexicans and that's just part of the plan
1 woman dies of a cougar attack in the last 25 years and everyone loses their minds!

You said you’ve seen one in an area that is supposedly full of them
>There are literally like 20 videos of people being cornered or charged, not ambushed
Those are defensive attacks like a mother with cubs which is never going to happen to you. Everyone has said they don’t hunt people
