I used to worry about kcals/oz and macros, now I just eat whatever I know I'll be able to stomach while out of breath and tired. Some examples are shortbread cookies, peanut m&ms, ham and cheese sandwich with avocado and hot sauce and buffalo chicken tender sandwich with blue cheese dressing. As always, winter is peak since you can bring perishables without worrying about the cheese going bad or anything in the heat..

Just a simple grain-chocolate bar during the way up and some nice dried meat, cheese and rolls on the top, usually.
I recently did a bad-weather mountain hike in a light snow storm and had some vegetable stew with egg in a thermos with me. That's the life, I tell you.

The only food I take with me is sunflower seeds

>spit the shells wherever I please as they biodegrade readily

That's really not how it works, kid. Calories are calories; you're not gonna develop an iron deficiency just because you eat some sugar while camping.

You can put a 1 pound steak cooked medium in a zip lock bag and chew on it all day. Raw potato and steamed broccoli are good side items.
Srsly- why wouldn't you bring a fucking steak to chew on. Ramon noodles ? who thinks like this ?

Putting napkins in the bag of a loaf of bread absorbs moisture and keeps it from molding for a longer time. For me, a jar of peanut butter and bread is my favorite. Energy drinks mixed with electrolytes (apparently already a thing that another anon mentioned itt) is really good.

>ramen
i tried this but it keeps sticking to the bottom and it's a fucking pain to clean it up afterwards. i use one of those titanium camping cups, is that the reason? or are you supposed to add olive oil or something
>>
>>
>>
>>2857933
Are you frying the ramen?
Just boil some water then chuck it in.
Titanium is notorious for being difficult to cook with. I've heard people say this is because of it's thermal conductivity, I've heard other people say that's a myth and it's actually just how thin titanium camping cookware is. In any case, it's easy to get a hotspot in the middle of the bowl/pan which burns anything in the centre but leaves the edges of the bowl raw.
Use more oil, turn the heat down, stir constantly and pray.

Chocolate covered peanuts. Apples, oranges or dates. Raisins.
Oat porridge with raisins and jam for breakfast, and two cups of strong and sweet tea.
For lunch (only really on the first day if it's a multi-day hike) I like a big sandwich with lots of butter, thick slices of ham, honey, black pepper, brie, and maybe salad or bell peppers.
Cured sausage and a few glugs of aquavit for when I reach the goal of the trip.
No, the real treat is a petrol station burger (biggest they have, no fries) and a bottle of ice cold Coke when I get back down. Sit down on the bench outside and eat it sensuously.

If I fill my 1 lite shaker bottle with a bag of this (saves space), that's enough food for 2 full days. Ever tried this stuff? Leaves a bitter taste but you feel a GLOW as it starts to digest, it's packed with protein, vitamins, nutrients and minerals.
I always take it with me, usually I'll have it for breakfast. There have been times when I forgot to get enough food, or I ran out and needed to walk a while to get more - this stuff was always on hand to fuel my efforts.
In a situation where you want to go out innawoods for months at a time you could carry a few bags of this (each bag is 30 meals) and be set for a long long time - just add stream water.
I just ordered a load more earlier in case things really get bad here in England, which they might. I can stay very healthy on this stuff even if my heart would yearn for real food after a few days. I've put a few bags in the back of my mother's canned food cupboard as well, then we're set.

Whey protein is an underrated prep for shtf sorta stuff but do NOT plan to live on it alone. A pure liquid diet fucks up your digestive system.
For non-disaster purposes I often take a container of BCAA powder with me on mountaineering trips or long trips in developing countries. Provides a great way to boost your protein intake when AMS has fucked your appetite or if you're subsisting on rice+beans from local villages. The performance boost is real.
You could use whey protein or other meal replacements but BCAAs are much more enjoyable when mixed with water and that makes a difference when you're trying to force yourself to get enough calories+protein to keep moving. Some of the new 'protein waters' are similarly palatable so I might switch to them but they are often composed primarily of hydrolysed collagen peptides which are unlikely to be as beneficial as BCAAs or a complete protein like whey.

Bagel sandwiches are goated. The bread doesn't get soggy and it doesn't get crushed in your bag. If the trip is longer than 3 days they are kinda gross by the end but they hold up pretty well.
>>
>>2859998
>A pure liquid diet fucks up your digestive system.
Everything you eat becomes a liquid shortly after you swallow it. As long as your liquid diet has enough fiber then there is literally no difference as far as digestion is concerned.

Disagree strongly
Bagels are much too chewy for a good sandwich. Who could possibly choose such over an English muffin, croissant, biscuit, or even toast for a breakfast sandwich? No one in their right mind that's who
Pic related literally proves you wrong, even a tortilla mogs your shitfagel lmfao

I like to vary things, but here's some constants:
>Snacks
- honey glazed nuts with sesame. Taste heavenly.
- Homemade jerky.
>Breakfast
- A fried breakfast egg is great. If you live in a country where they are sold refrigerated (america does it I think), then taking eggs refrigerated is probably unsafe, so stay safe out there, but if you live in a country where that isn't the case, they'll be shelf stable for weeks. Do be careful with setting down your bag though (I put them in a ziploc just in case of leakage).
- Oats, milk powder and the add-ins of choice (raising and cinnamon, or chocolate, or similar) make for a great porridge. Just overnight soak with some water and heat in the morning if you want it warm.
- Coffee (I tend to just bring pre-ground and a metal filter that fits onto a cup. Immersion brew in a pot, filter and clean the pot).
>Main Dishes
- My absolute best dish: Couscous. In a bag add: Couscous, dried parsley, dried herbs of choosing (anything Mediterranean works), freeze dried onions/shallots, raisins, some curry powder (just a little) and the secret ingredient: Powdered citric acid, about a knife's tip. This is what makes the difference between boring and fresh taste. Add some form of meat, either smoked sausage or canned meat (spam works), fry that up too.
(cont)
Picrel, the couscous. Visually appalling, flavor-wise unbeatable.

- Falafel: 3 Ingredients: Wheat wraps, powdered falafel and middle eastern salad (cubed onion, cucumber and tomato). For the falafel add water, let it sit, then rather than deep frying balls, squish them down a little and shallow fry as disks. The middle eastern salad can be made in advance or in camp fresh, but the cucumber and tomato tend to get beat up after a few days, so it's a early meal.
- If you're in camp for long: White beans (you can pre-soak in the backpack to save time), cook in fire, drain. Add herbes de provence, some cut up smoked fatty sausage for flavor. Add tomato. Depending on the weight and trash situation, either canned or puree, which you water down. Optional, but makes it much nicer: Add some cream. (The shelf stable kind in cartons works).
- The ol' garlic ramen: Two containers, one with a mix of light onions sauce and dark chinese vinegar (about 3:1, or just onions sauce if you're lazy), another with neutral oil. Cook the ramen and drain the water. Heat the oil so it starts rippling on top. Put the ramen powder in an empty bowl, put the raw garlic on top, then pour the hot oil over it so it sizzles. Mix and add the onions sauce. Then add the cooked ramen and mix again. Amazing flavor. If you have an egg, a fried egg as a topping is even nicer, though I rarely bother.
Picrel, the falafel before frying them up. Didn't take pics of the final thing though.

Huh didn't think you could smoke ground beef, try any others? I remember loving turkey jerky as a kid. Beef jerky prices are outrageous so haven't bothered in years. Is it worth the effort?
Pro-Tip I just remembered, there's small grass fed beef sticks from Costco that help create near no wipe events. Now that I think of it, I should step up by putting my stool where my mouth is and test this further to benefit mankind
>>
>>
>>2864294
>Huh didn't think you could smoke ground beef
>Is it worth the effort?
It works pretty well. The good part is that you don't need to marinade the meat first. Just mix, roll it out between two sheets of baking paper for your prefered thickness (I go for ~5mm), and cut it into strips. The same principles goes as for regular jerky: Low fat and only use meat from sources you trust.
>try any others?
I'm considering trying making jerky out of ground lamb. A local farm have some pretty good deals once in a while.

If you're walking enough the urea won't have the opportunity to build up in your joints. Conversely if you get gout you aren't walking enough. Gout is urea crystals forming because the synovial fluid isn't being circulated because you are too sedentary.
