There's nothing wrong with it as long as everything is consensual.

The branding persists but the actual manufacturing has changed and they just use MABL identical to blu-ray discs for most disks. I don't know how accurate the current info is but a quick search shows only the 4.7gb dvds and the 25 GB BD-R discs still use the original technology. This is just speculation on my part but I suspect that even those might just be backstock and once their gone the real m-disks will be too.

No they don’t. Max life with proper storage for almost all disc based media is 80-150 with Blu-ray being fairly high, but the issue is the material used to make them begins to degrade causing read issues. And this is with proper, autistic, ideal storage conditions which your dusty ass basement or attic won’t have.

Personally, for books and neat .pdf I print them at work in our printer that has a laminate option. Convinced them to buy it years ago due to manufacturing environment and the gigantic time waste it was to laminate bullshit daily. Start it off during a lunch break. Job 1 work stuff, job 2 my book, job 3 work stuff. In case anyone picks it up before I can grab it since it can take 20+ minutes.

M-Discs replace the organic ink layer with an inorganic one similar to stone. This guy tested one outdoors for 1 year and it worked after. Archive because original site is down.
https://archive.is/xQ6sj
https://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/artsep16/mol-mdisc-review.html
There is some controversey, because a company purchased the rights to M-Disc branding, then changed the construction. I've heard counter claims that most blu rays use inorganic data layers now anyways, and that M-discs are still certified to the old standards.

M-Discs are not being made anymore. It's fifty fifty whether or not you'll get a legitimate (lithographic) M-Disc from Verbatim or any other vendor. The legitimate M-Discs are lithographic (they have a ceramic layer that gets ablated away) and would last indefinitely under normal conditions, while the other discs use a layer that oxidizes over time and doesn't last when outside of a perfect vacuum.

heck a CD-R that's not chinaslop would probably survive 100 and it's not the polycarbon that degrades but the organic slop
a factory stamped CD would probably survive 1000 years by itself (it's got aluminum)

its just, man , backup 24TB on that shit. and see how much it costs and how long it takes. Then realise 3-2-1 works fine. Then there's them selling "fake" M-DISC that is really just regular bluray. make them 8TB and we'll talk
right now, I'm copying 3.5TB on a new HTPC/server (I'm frugal in data volume, I guess: pays off to be a bad audience), and sata to sata (from a backup HDD to installed HDD; 8TB SSD are too expensive), it's gonna take me more than 12h (including md5 sum checking)
my three backup HDDs plus the live one are a bugger enough to sync as it is
and you want to me to attend and manipulate about 40 of these things, one by one, and to rummage through that pile to keep it all synced?

Only retards with no experience with discs would ever believe this obvious marketing bullshit. Even archival gold discs don’t last longer than 50 years in anything but a climate controlled installation. Wet discs delaminate in months. Moisture and humidity ruin them. The sun ruins them. The regular Blu Ray discs that are manufactured now a days all use the same inorganic recording materials as a M-Disc uses however the regular BD-R Discs are not sealed from the elements on the edge/ circumference of the disc, On the other hand The M-Disc recording layer itself is bonded between the polycarbonate layers and some adhesive interlocking to Bond and seal the recording layer inside creating a shell around the Recording layer and a Ti or Titanium Oxide layer is sprayed on the disc to seal it from moisture and elements. Even a regular BD-R, BD-R DL, BD-R XL are all rated to last for 15000 years if stored properly that is the theoretical LE/Life expectancy however factually speaking you could get a life expectancy of at least 25-50 years from regular Blu Ray Discs and at least 50-100 years easily from an M-Disc BD-R /DL/XL 25/50/100GB.

Flash needs to be rewritten periodically or it degenerates. We have EEPROMs from the 80s that can’t be read. Only option is to source the original file and flash a new EEPROMS and good luck if it’s a high end piece of kit with little market penetration.

They put it through intense UV shit and oxidation to simulate accelerated aging.
But anyways, practically, most commerical CD/DVD masters stored in decent conditions (in the dark away from crazy heat) are readable even if they're approaching 50 years old. Same with loads of even basic crappy burned CDRs from 30 years ago. These may or may not last 1000 years, but if you burn 5 of them and vacuum seal with some dessicants and put in a closet or deposit box I give a 99% chance at least one will last until well past you're dead.

uhh..I've no idea where you are pulling that from, some sources would've been useful to still tell you it's all marketing.
I still have like 50 50gb M-Discs I bought pre 2020.
*It is true M-Disc stopped existing like a decade ago, to my surprise mind you, there is plenty of speculation that some of the skus where moved to normal inorganic layer BD-Rs, some where not, M-Disc of course is not confirming anything, and since the company rumored to be involved is CMC, which btw also swallowed Verbatim, now I have serious doubts of the 1000 year claim.
Claim which in the end is mere marketing because realistically nobody is going to be around to confirm it, and nothing will be around either to verify it on. In per TB cost Vs. reliability terms HDDs are still king even when paired with the the 3-2-1 (or similar) strategy. SATA/USB is still not at risk of being phased out whereas optical disc drives are, something which you now need to factor when making a yuge optical disk backup.
>>527719694
>>527721912
Seems to be true, I stopped buying Verbatim after CMC devoured it, my take is you have to buy them directly from mdisc dot com and there is no first party guarantee according to this

Yo I work at a certain Japanese media reseller...
Sadly they last maybe 50 years in the best condition. Unless your willing to shell outa few thousand for vacuumed sealed temperature regulated closed circuit led shielded bookshelves these bitches are going to get damaged.
The root cause are Actinomycetes, These bastards eat residue off of glass and other reflective surfaces leaving behind a little white mess that in most cases cant be removed without damaging the disc. They pretty much shit super glue.
I love physical media but sadly anything other than a large stone obelisk/monument is doomed to last maybe century of absence.
good news if you have a few really cherished discs its not hard to do maintenance every 6 months to keep them functional. Considering thats about how often most of yall take baths im sure youll be able to manage

it's a ceramic blu ray that can survive EMP's
sure hard disks per se survive EMP's but their electronics (containing their fuckin geometry) won't
so it's arguably the best bet
considering what I said, 100GB per human ain't that bad of an offer (also 100GB per asian non-jeet, and 10GB per nigger and 1GB per jeet)

when the NA-EU-NWO drops and all the pcs break because of cpu or overall hardware degradation, no one will be able to access their data anyway. also new legislature will prevent that from happening legally, too.

The absolute best thing about physical storage like this is that normies no longer use them and often donate them to thrift stores. They never check to see if they left data on the discs either. If I find an open spool I just buy it (especially if its old and dusty). I've found loads of forgotten porn stashes. When I feel extra froggy I'll bring my old laptop and go through all the discs right there in the store.

MDISC is based. But remember that almost any good quality Blu-ray will last a super long time. It's the older CDs and DVDs that had the shitty dyes that dissolved over several years.
>>527717807
They extrapolate the data lost over times we have now and look at it and such.
>>527719073
You can tell the old from the new, it's not 50/50 at all. But there's nothing wrong with the new ones- still, if you want the old ones, you can still get them while supplies last.
>>527719244
M-Disc is available in DVD and Blu-ray.
>>527721273
Nah noob, put it in a drawer, it lasts a real long time. They did serious fucking testing on M-Disc, they are the best archival thing available for the common man.
>The sun ruins them
This is true actually, if you leave your M-Disc in the sun for a month or two it'll be toast. So don't do that, because it's fucking retarded. Only a retard would go through the effort of making an M-Disc that will last hundreds of years and then decide "You know what, I should just leave this in the fucking sun, which will rapidly destroy it".

Literally every single one of my old pornhub favorites/bookmarks is gone. It's a lesson you have to learn the hard way now if I favorite something I download it. Storage is cheap.
Recently I'm seeing a lot of music in my older youtube playlists disappear so I'll have to go through and download that. Gonna be a pain in the ass but that's what I get for relying on streaming for so long. My advice is to start downloading from the beginning.
>>
>>527717569
Computers will not last 1000 years, standards in less than 30 years wil not be compatible with that anymore and M-DISC writers and readers will not exist in a century because technology will have changed.
Valuable information must be copied from book to book for centuries by people who think this info is valuable. It's the only way.

Discs use chemicals that fade away over a decade. The technology is not that much different than DVD-R or CD-R. You are massive newfags that never pirated ps2 games. The best way to save data is a raid 50 configuration and even then, disks will break over time. If you want to last millenia consider stone tablets.
>>
>>527729541
They are the same for me. Maybe he bought fakes?
I could go ahead and run a Raman spectography with work lab equipment to be certain but that doesnt seem necessary.
If you are that afraid, just argon gas seal them, the internal structure of the disc is in either case not subject to interior chemical reactions

Look at backblaze HDD studies, HDDs fail at an absurd rate, like 7% PER YEAR. There's also bitrot where you lose data without knowing it
If you survive the curve then you'll be good for a while, but the overall design and components selected are not reliable. Desktop drives are inferior to server drives in MTBF

also one can deduct and combinatorically determine a huge portion of things. just use logic.
its more like, data as evidence as use for ones argument to get the normie/npc to finally comprehend the things. im not saying i disagree with you. but i cant see how you will have time to sight/manage your data all the time. the most important thinks are in your head/you already.

The newer M-Discs are said to have a visibly different type of coating but the ones I got are optically seemingly of the same type as the eldest one's I got.

Been using kubuntu without major issues. Regarding Disc burning on Linux, K3B ruined several MDiscs for me at one point due to mkisofs crashing for some reason. I tested it with 2 different drives. That was a major pain, but xfburn worked flawlessly.

Hey guys I should let you know I was planning on backing up a bunch of 4chan threads here on to a bunch of m disks, then hide them around the city for people to find in 100~1000 years just in case we all fail and the child eating judes somehow have us all murdered. So that there is evidence of all of our efforts and suffering, and hopefully give hope and reason to what happend.
Right now I have about 20,000 (I think, its about 2 million files in total with my other archives).
I no joke work up for a nightmare about 3 hours ago, and realized that I need to back up everything offline, and to archive org encase I die and all of theses back ups are for nothing. Crazy that this thread was here, because it so relent to what I was doing an hour BEFORE I had opened pol this early morning.
Im not wanting to spend 350 on a bunch of plastic that has been marked up for no reason.
Thanks for the warning, I almost wasted so much on a bunch of plastic!

There is definitely something about having archival grade large storage at ready disposal that (((they))) fear. Discs were great at being cheap sure they slow but not circuits to degrade over time.

>>527735163
> Source: myass
You haven't attempted to store anything and you for sure don't have access to comemrcial grade disc press let alone master discs that are used for printing
>>527735374
All of these can last up to a century. Considering its a commercial press. Your old blueray-rw drive and discs will write 20years at best if you record at 1x.
As I've said, laser etches a chemical compound that degrades over time. You can have a different compound and vrand it CD, DVD, blueray, Mdisk, ND (short for NiggerDisk). Tech is practically the same.

Any company that is tried to develop it hasn't been successful. I mean polished disc should be relatively cheaper to a circuit that could do as much. You might say that its almost a conspiracy as this thread suggests. Research has even gotten to 1.6 petabits or 200 terabytes.

How is it that niggers are allowed to roam free with that level of mental retardation?
How a specific chemical reacts to a specific type of light source can't be generalized by your brainlet take.
Chemical compounds may or may not change form over time. Polycarbonate, as used in optical discs, is chemically stable if not under the influence of something that oxidizes it, high temp or radiation.
You could go through any layer of an optical disc and make similar arguments.
Discs are composite of multiple layers each with their own properties.
>>
>>527740426
Moving into three dimensional holographic cubes sounds like a better move. Having lasers read and write on a three dimensional axis sounds like the next step. Also moving from plastics to something like a sapphire or diamond substrate to hold the data. Theres already been gold disk data storage since the 60s.

Radiation is a problem solved by gold storage while temp is solved by diamond storage. Nothing's perfect though. Data storage is itself finite and even archeology is relatively new when considering the amounts of time that modern data storage could be viable.

Any storage media will eventually decay for sure. Gold is pretty based in general with how chemically inert it is, regarding that property, perfect for protection of a recording layer from corrosion (at least from one direction)!
There are also these (supposedly) gold coated DVD-R from Verbatim but with 4,7GB, their use is rather limited. I am still annoyed they never made gold coated BD-Rs

Okay hear me out, these types of industrial SD cards are pretty damn reliable. I have used some in several types of machines for a few years commonly with 24/7 read/write operations without issue. I can't speak on the data retention times though (manufacturer claims 10 years in powered off state)
