I blame the Chinese. They pumped in too much money into the anime industry in the late 2010's, which led to anime studios quickly pumping out fucktons of low-budget anime without actually compensating for the increased demand for employees. By doing this, anime industry executives were forcing vital talent for the industry to be spread extremely thinly.
If you look at stats for the number of anime produced per season, you'll see that there is a very pronounced increase all the way from the 1970s till the present. Whereas in the Spring 1979 there were literally 22 anime TV series being produced by every single animation studio in Japan, in the current season (Winter 2026), there are literally 186 anime being made all across Japan by every single animation studio out there in Japan. Last season (Fall 2025) had 244 anime TV series being produced at the same time.
Being able to draw well is a natural talent, and although Japan is a relatively large country in terms of population, unfortunately, in the last few decades its population has contracted rather than grown (just like, well, literally all of the former USSR and most of Europe), so that means that the number of potentially talented animators in Japan has obviously not grown, but instead we see fewer talented animators working on each anime, and as work loads become increasingly heavier, we see less and less people being able to truly dedicate their time to making amazing quality work.
After all, if the Chinese just want magic adventures and slop, then it makes no sense, at least in the minds of executives, to have animators literally spend hours making highly detailed animated scenes that last only a few seconds.
But just like with everything, we can only hope that the voices of those who care for good, high-quality work will overpower the ones who will accept cheap stuff.

Those are anime for edgy teenagers.
A dark theme doesn't necessarily mean disturbing. Attack on Titan is a dark fantasy that has a good plot and serious characters. I also liked Frieren though it can get childish at times.

>is also the protagonist
No, he is the agonist; A person engaged in a contest or struggle.
Namely with...himself.

Yeah I don't understand this. Why are most male anime protagonist so weird specially around women? It's hard to relate to them.
