Incest avoidance, or preference, are real things. The paper is a meta-analysis specifically about lab experiments conducted to see how relatedness affects mate choice. But mate choice is just one way inbreeding avoidance occurs. In many wild species, related males and females who are reproductively viable have near zero mating opportunities with each other because of physical migration or different maturation rates. It's still inbreeding avoidance, just not at the level of individual behavior. There's no reason why inbreeding avoidance via mate choice would evolve in that situation.

Primates and mammals with similar characteristics tend to practice inbreeding avoidance at the individual level. And reflecting their necessity, M/S aversion tends to be much stronger than B/S or F/D, since the latter two are less likely to interact when reproductively viable. A number of Japanese researchers have done similar lab work with primates in an attempt to induce momcest and found it very difficult, though not impossible.

Journalists don't critically read the studies they make headlines about, and researchers know how to phrase a title or an abstract in a way that maximizes attention from potential donors. What's more relevant to understanding inbreeding problems are rare, wild species where inbreeding among adult relatives is common and results in little harm, or domesticated species for which issues of inbreeding depression have been managed by humans.

Likely not. There have been rodent experiments showing that relatives would mate with each other as long as they were reared apart. The same rodents were unwilling to mate with their step-relatives. Unrelated chimpanzees in zoos are not observed mating if they were reared together. This Japanese study had a monkey who avoided mating with both his mother and an unrelated female who was behaviorally close to his mother. Mate choice inbreeding avoidance mostly works through familiarity when young, not through another form of kin recognition.

GSA is partly just a corollary of the Westermarck effect. The other part of GSA seen in humans, extremely strong attraction and potential pair bonding, is more difficult to find in animal research. Experiments would probably be most meaningful if restricted to monogamous and polygynous species. The species I mentioned above are polygynandrous.
