The American Football League, an NFL competitor, ran from 1960-1970 before merging with the NFL. Starting with the 1966 season the AFL and NFL played a SUPER BOWL to determine the ultimate football champ. The Vikings did win the NFL in the 1969 season, but then got whooped in the SUPER BOWL by ther AFL's Kansas City Chiefs. Therefore, they weren't true champions.
