I wanted to spend this month in a Spooky retro mood, alas I had no horror collection anymore.

This version is 53GB and the highest quality I could find. It has a RARE English commentary/interview by Alejandro Jodorowsky and some Britbong I don't know. Most of his commentaries are Spanish and solo. This film is basically a non-gay Beau is Afraid (2023) made by an actually competent director and real artist. If memory serves, this may be Jodorowsky's last film using real (animal) blood instead of whatever the industry standard was back then. I don't recall very many bloody scenes in his more modern works. Considering he's mellowed out a lot, I wouldn't be surprised if he uses synthetic blood in something like Endless Poetry (2016) in a certain scene with the cute dwarf woman I'm totally not in love with.

If you have issues with your mother or relationships with women in general, this film if for you.

There is no malware in movie torrents. Video files are not executable code, and any vulnerabilities that some specific random video player of your choice might have are extremely useless to exploit because the malicious actor would have to guess the player right. An .exe that says "click me to win $10" is hundreds of times more effective than a hypothetical attack like this.

This is a shitty and useless advice and general fearmongering for not-tech-savvy users.

1. Since video container formats (such as .mkv) aren't executables or scripts that can run arbitrary code, the only way for them to be malicious is to be intentionally broken in extremely specific and peculiar ways that makes the video player software spaz out and do something unintended and bad.

2. Users across the internet use such an immense variety of video players and their versions that an exploit like this would be utterly useless. Okay, you found a way to infect PCs that have BSPlayer 2.1.6.3b by using maliciously formatted .mkvs? Good for you, too bad that 99.999% of population uses smth else or a different version. It's far FAR more efficient to just pay some torrent tracker to show a malicious ad banner to its users.

3. Maliciously formatted video files can still be 100% spec compliant and not "broken". There can very easily be nothing wrong with them and they'd play or "get reencoded" just fine. Just like a malicious setup of some game will install the game perfectly fine for you - it's just that it will also install a crypto miner. In other words, you can't deem some file (ANY file) safe just on the basis that it appears to work as intended.

4. Video re-encoding is a very resource intensive operation and also produces a shittier-looking end result, doubly so if you don't have appropriate expertise. Anyone can drag & drop a video into Handbrake, not anyone knows how to achieve decent results.

5. If you are still unreasonably paranoid beyond any reason, you can watch the video file that terrifies you in some app that the hypothetical malware authors don't expect you to, like in VirtualDub (editing software). If you don't trust even THAT, then realize that the "reencoding" app (like Handbrake etc) from your own advice is also not safe from the terrible malware in this video file, because it opens this file to reencode it. That is to say, you're a schizo.

Strongly consider the fact that instead of targeting MPC-HC or BSPlayer or whatever, the exploit that's baked into the video might just as well target the decoder part of the x264 codec that you have installed, and therefore this:

Just like any other operation that accesses the video contents inside the file, anything from viewing it in a player to reencoding it in command line without even displaying a single frame on your screen.

In other words, if you're afraid that a given video file is malicious and that's why you're afraid to play it, then you should have the exact same concern about reencoding it with ffmpeg or with anything else.

Your concern - or any other anon's concern - is that a video file might contain an exploit that takes advantage of a vulnerability in the software that opens it to play it.

Your proposed solution, recklessly touted as resulting in a video that will be "safe by definition", does NOT actually solve this, because your method is vulnerable to the exact same kind of exploits. If a malicious video can target Media Player Classic, it can similarly target the x264 decoder instead, or ffmpeg, or anything else in your tool chain. If the hypothetical threat exists in the first place, then you are equally as pwned with the same probability even if you use your approach.

Not only is your advice unnecessary because of the reasons explained in detail above, but also it actually does not and cannot guarantee a "safe" resulting new video. You are lulling people into a false sense of security and also advising them to destroy the video quality of their files on top of it. It's an advice that outright doesn't work against this hypothetical attack vector through a video file.

These things make video file exploits extremely ill-suited for targeting random users indiscriminately, such as releasing an infected video via torrents. Instead, what actually happens in practice is that a little-known vulnerability in specific software - a specific video player etc - is used to target a specific victim who is known to use it.

Fearmongering about malware in video files - while it's fundamentally possible, no shit duh - is by and large spread by corporate owners of media IPs to dissuade clueless normies from pirating media, because unlike pirating software which is inherently risky virus-wise, pirating media is safe.

... and, again - I want to underscore this point one more time - a malware payload, IF it is present in a video file, can be targetting the x264 decoder itself instead of a highly specific video player, which means that NO method of handling the video file is safe, including feeding it directly to ffmpeg to reencode, like that other user is (erroneously) suggesting. You can NOT protect yourself with this method.

My guys, both of you just made me the happiest anon ever. I really thought it went mostly unnoticed, but creating Crescent Relay was an effort that had to be started months in advance. Probably it was March or May when I started collecting the pieces for it (I wanted to make a 24-hour long block of a fictional TV station, with ads, movies, episodes of shows, etc). I had to make a lot of in depth research to collect pieces of media only from the 1970s (the decade it is based on), while also learning to use Adobe Premiere Pro (pirated of course). It truly was a gratifying experience, a personal love letter to the era.Thank you both for remembering and caring enough to ask for it.
