Has anyone here tried this? What should I expect?

Despite loving Final Fantasy, I steered as far away as I could from XIV, because I watched MMORPGs destroy several of my freinds' lives and that was before they had become as insane as they are now and the worst they could lose is just time and the money from a monthly subscription.

That said, a XIV RPG does pique my interest, because at minimum it's going to have good art.

It seems bad, but I've been looking for a PDF of the books lately to try it out

I haven't played it, but it seems interesting.

If it's not good, I've heard good stories from people who played FFXIV and wanted to do their own RPG in that setting, where they just ran it with Fabula Ultima.

Wasn’t this more like a board game with very barebones support for actual roleplaying?

A board game pretending to be a TTRPG.

It can't be any worse than that 'ffrpg legend edition' shitjob.

If the use of the tokens and cards plays anything like WFRPG3e, it might be pretty solid.
Will need the pdfs to actually know though.

I only skimmed it when the starter came out, but it didn't seem like a very good system for role playing. The classes looked really set in stone and they didn't have all the classes at the time. Personally it looked like a raid simulator to me, so if you've wanted to run raid bosses in tabletop form it seemed okay.
