Why do fighter/warrior classes exist when a paladin can do everything they do better, plus gains access to divine powers?

because sometimes i want to play as sellsword merc or knight or other type of hired muscle that's adventuring between gigs and relies on his own wits and cold steel, instead of being forced to suckle on local church's good favor or bound in some other fashion.

>why do a bunch of outdated and sanitized pop culture references exist without any regards for cohesion in a kitchen sink fantasy system only meant to be sold to a bunch of mouthbreathers?
Because the system designers never cared about anything beyond selling a product and having the "correct" public image.

First off, only around 1 in 100 people even have PC classes.
Secondly, the Fighter's sole prerequisite is Strength 9. More than half of all PC-capable people will qualify for it.
The Paladin's prerequisites are Strength 12, Dexterity 9, Wisdom 13, Charisma 17, Human only, and being Lawful good. Only about 1 person per 675,000 meets these prerequisites.
(Assuming 2nd Edition AD&D, and 3d6 but arranged to taste for stat generation)

>when a paladin can do everything they do better
They quite literally cannot. Paladins make two attacks at most. Fighters can throw out ten in a turn, 11 if they're dual wielding. They have better self-healing too thanks to Second Wind, better skill versatility, and more reliable, consistent damage through Battlemaster and Champion. They also have access to actual ranged combat and are arguably the best at it, something paladins simply cannot do. Paladins, in fact, have no ranged abilities at all, and even in melee a Fighter will win most of the time due to having better, more consistent damage.
Paladins excel at melee burst damage. That's the only thing they have, and as of 2024 it's so limited and so action intensive to smite that they're a shadow of their former selves in 2014/5e, pushing fighters even further ahead as martials. Fighters even get more Masteries, meaning they have more interesting combat than a Paladin.

In OP's defense, I think the implication is based on realism. If a strength 17 character went up against someone else with equal stats, being able to smite and cast magic gives them an advantage. However, what he fails to realize is people don't live in a vacuum and skill plays a factor, especially when someone is expected to be a solid warrior with no natural magic, forcing them to practice and learn in ways the Paladin is never forced to.
