giant rats are unironically the perfect starter enemy and I will die on this hill. they're low stakes but not zero stakes. they establish tone and provide environmental storytelling. they're mechanically flexible and can cause mayhem with status effects. they humble players and scale weirdly well (one rat is a nuisance, a million rats is psychological warfare). also, theyre' relatable. everyone understands "giant rat," no lore dump required. the giant rat is simple, versatile, humbling, eternal.

how have you used giant rats in your games? any cursed rat stories or party wipes to share?

Okay, but what happened to the hat?
>>
>>97860122
eaten by the giant rats.
>>
>>97860128
Damn. You're telling me you missed the chance to have a giant rat wear the hat?
>>

>I will die on this hill
Shouldn't have got yourself surrounded by rats then, dummy.
>>
>>97860134
fuck. i've made a mistake.
>>
>>97860099
I dont like rat enemies because in real life they're non hostile
>>
>>97860099
I had goblin archers riding giant rats as mounts. They were fun, especially when using mongol like 'shoot and scoot' tactics against slow moving mellee characters on foot.
>>
>>97860099
It's a shame that none of that happened.
>>
>>97860607
Giant rats are pretty much the ideal goblin mount.
>>
>>97860464
I mean the same applies to skeletons but I never see anyone complain about that.
>>
>>97861115
He's been making these retarded rat threads for months.
>>
>>97861649
Skeletons dont even exist in real life
>>
>>97861672
Are you a blob of just muscle and fat?
>>
>>97861115
What makes you say that?
>>
>>97861692
Do you know what a skeleton is in fantasy?
>>
>>97860464
>the fantasy thing isn't realistic so now I am mad
Tell us more.
>>
>>97861715
So you understand that fantasy skeletons are different from real ones, but get mad that fantasy rats are different from real ones?
>>
>>97861965
Fantasy rats suck
>>97861952
Fantasy is about roleplaying things that aren't possible in real life. So it's disconcerting to see things that are too close to life being used.
>>
>>97862447
>Fantasy is about roleplaying things that aren't possible in real life.
Right, so you should accept hostile rats, given that rats in real life are generally non hostile.
>>
>>97862539
Rats are small creatures that feed on corpses and paralyzed victims. It's completely uninteresting to make the rats massive.
>>
>>97860464
The overwhelming majority of rats are not the domesticated variety and they can be quite hostile.
>>
>>97862646
Rats will run away from people unless the person is incapacitated and they've run out of food. Cats do the same thing. I would think massive cats would be dumb in fantasy too.

Sometimes its flight sometimes its fight. You've just not been rural or sewer enough.
Fuck, I had a housecat that took out my 200lb roomate once.
You can not like big animals as a fantastical trope because its your personal taste, but you're struggling to justify it based in spotty 'realism' logic that has notable holes in it.
Its okay to just not like thing. I can't stand the short people races in fantasy, dwarves, gnomes, hobbits, kender, whateverthefuck. Not racist just don't like em.
>>
>>97860464
finding out why they're hostile can be the quest hook
>>
>>97862581
Okay, but your sniveling interests don't affect what's possible in real life.

What sort of hat? This post >>97839314 makes it very obvious that hats set the tone. Wrong hat and you might break the game.

>>97863117
idk man, giant hats are just too unrealistic.
>>
>>97860464
Rats can be plenty hostile when they are diseased as OP established.

How about rat as (secret) final boss?

>Well, you see, I had giant rats in my cellar, so giant cats seemed like a good idea at the time... but now my ivory tower is being condemned by the the giant health inspectors I conjured up to chase off the giant dog catchers.
Sounds like a great start to a side adventure to me.
>>
>>97867026
Well yeah, you made it cool and fun. I just think giant rats in fantasy sucks. But this idea of yours, good job.
>>
>>97862581
I don't understand.

Rats are hostile when they don't fear us, specifically going after weaker humans like old people. Claiming they are non-hostile basically ignores why they are non-hostile.
>>
>>97862808
200lbs of fat doesn't make a parson strong. Just jump one by surprise and they basically broke their bones as they fall over.
>>
>>97865394
That's not impressive, I too can control a twink by pulling his hair.
>>
I can't believe nobody has any stories about giant rats.
>well why aren't you posting yours
I don't have one but I thought I was an outlier when I couldn't remember any.

Giant rats almost killed the entire party in session 1. Wfrp 2e.
>>
>>97860099
Level 1 is the most fun after that party power creep makes every encounter trivial

Of course they do, they just wear a disguise to look like human guys.
>>
>>97860464
You really think a hungry enough rat wouldn't take on something its size, even if as a last resort?

I use wild canines. Mix of dogs and wolves. Works well in my area because we just had wild dog attacks killing people in three counties.

>>party of fresh-faced level 1 idiots enters their first dungeon
had party of these doing boot camp tier campaign, died on first encounter with band of orcs (not Dnd)
all fault of autist wizard casting ice fireball equivalent despite whole team inside area of blast, rekting support characters that were made too weak to survive hit, and crippling others so orcs basically raped rest effortlessly; then tried to flee by flying out of fight with two orcs grabbing hm and hacking at - he lost conscious midair, spell still working got him frozen and he shattered falling
then It went to loop: band of orc exped and improved own equipment from loot and next rolled team had to defeat them failing; eventually one player that missed session was leading orc tribe
turned out to multisession of epic proportion, fun was had; orcs finally lost after basically three WFB battles when kingdom mobilized more forces, tho did much damage in area
