>Thread question:
You're in luck, as the mould for your least favourite unit has broken. GW gives >(you) the opportunity to replace it with a different (but thematically similar!) unit. Which kit is it, and what do you replace it with?

Update or replace current firebelly.
Maybe underworlds warband. Maybe some spicy rules to destroy obscuring terrain like woods or have units in it take guaranteed d3 wounds

Replace Namarti with Elves slowly turning into sea creatures like chitinous half-crab men or elongated jaw angler fish or big eyed deep ones or finned sahuagin.

That one anon yesterday who said steelhelms should've had poleaxes was on to something
>>
>>97897739
I've picked back up the Shysh terrain project since I've got the cities army project starting! (And I finished all the greater daemons) I've got a few bits and bobs but 2 of those stormbringer statues and 1 more realmgate (that I'm gonna try and paint like the vanilla wow portal or BC portal)
>>
She warhammers my spear with her head am I right fellas
>>
>>97898029
The new board seems really interesting/complex with the square objectives and even more terrain giving abilities.
On the other hand while the new CoS looks fine, the skaven spearhead looks completely busted
>>
>>97898168
CoS sounds slightly underpowered (what else is new lol) but yeah the skaven half seems insane.
>>
>>97898249
At least these new units should help the army patch-up it's lack of damage and lack of rend.
>>
>>97897865
Do you have an army picture of your IDK? I love your dudes
>>
>>97898257
Oh yeah the grenadiers should help cos out big time in aos proper. The gallants seem kind of wimpy though, idk if they're going to be able to do much. Maybe they'll get a stronger warscrolls though.
>>
>>97898249
I'm hoping it's just spearhead stuff and we get a slight boost. Having the army be a bit more murder oriented would be nice.

>>97898272
I'm hoping Gallants get some decent stats, literally just make them hammerers with 2hp.
>>
>>97898273
I think I saw a spoiler for gallants and they are indeed 2 hp save 3+, with conditional ward 5.
Just a big block of armor.

>>97898292
with 1 damage I can't really imagine much use for them unless they're dirt cheap. Or have a decent swing and are accurate.

If they're the same stats as the spearhead, they'll be very EH. But 2 damage melee and shooting with the grenadiers THAT'S what I'm gonna go with.
>>
>>97898258
Glad you like them! It’s not as good as a picture as I thought it was but it also doesn’t include my Ikon which wasn’t done at the time, so he’s attached separately. I hope it uploads right, the preview looked super grainy for some reason.
>>
>>97898299
I think they are like twice the cost of steelhelm per model, if not mistaken.
>>
>>97898299
They're very pillow fisted aren't they? Especially compared to the grenadiers and their 2 damage axes, and then there's their guns for some extra chip. Very odd.
>>
>>97898300
Yeah it looks like it was taken with a flash but they still all look gorgeous!
>>
>>97898300
>>97898363
It's why I only take pictures at LGS, they tend to have good wide lighting and makes for better pictures due to the set design in general.
>>
>>97898363
I was actually aiming my hobby lamp into the box, which is how I did the LRL’s picture, but I think it’s a combo of aiming the light wrong and the angle I took the picture.
>>
>>97898308
I've take a block of grenadiers in a heartbeat if they can actually kill stuff with a bit of accuracy buffing as opposed to some guys whose sole reason is to sit on a point and not die.

>>97898302
I mean, I guess if it's basically just a better alternative battleline, neat? But who knows, once the book comes out could completely change how the army plays.
>>
>>97897575
>Stabbas
I would just make them more interesting with fungal stuff, alchemists in the unit, etc and more importantly have ears poking through the hoods.
Ideally it'd be a dual kit for Stabbas and an armoured variant, with bow arms adding a weapon option for the two builds
>>
This is gonna sound weird but I was wondering, is there a particular reason GW squatted Glaivewraiths? I realize they had a god awful profile from day 1 of them releasing, but it feels weird that GW didn't just... Make them good. Like at any point the rules team could just give good stats or an ability to a shitty unit but for some reason they just seem to decide that some units SHOULD be bad.
>>
>>97898569
really, stabbas? to me they're perfect. Though I wouldn't mind a more armoured or fungified """elite""" version, kind of the like what gutter runners are to nightrunners.
If I had to replace any unit from gloomspite (except for ancient spiderfang) I'd pick the snuffler guys, just not a fan. I'd replace them with the mold spreader/roarer from blanche's artwork.

Oh no the revenant draconith broke?! I guess GW will have to just make a standard new zombie dragon/terrorgheist kit with ball joint wings and legs so you can pose it much easier and it looks much better on top of having a new ghoul king and vamp lord.
>>
>>97897827
holy shit anon this is so good, how'd you do all the gem triangle thingies so clean?
>>
>>97898067
this is kickass, how'd you do the wall-statue thing, what is it? i love it
>>
>>97898804
It's an old fantasy terrain, they re-released it back during malign portents but I bought this a couple years back. I think it's called like... Astromancers-vane or something.

I break it apart and use it as various pieces of terrain. But the statue was I think... Metal layer, then super watered down turqoise paint, then a dark wash, then more watered down greenish rusty color, then a drybrush of iron metal.

I also have the giant layer-cake tower that I have yet to start on because it's fuckoff massive.
>>

noted, what kind of paint? im working on my seraphon as well so im curious all about your work.
>>
>>97898607
They're potato shit to me, they look about the same as the dwarfs released alongside them which is to say terrible and dated
>>
>>97898887
my only problem with them is their weapons can look kind of off, they hold them in an odd way. But the basic "layout" of the kit is fantastic imo, quite simple (nice for painting) but still a strong silhouette.
>>
>>97898915
They're just unfortunately obviously WHFB models. They work for rank and flank but next to other free formation minis it's terribly jarring. Now that basically everything else in AoS is original, they stand out as the worst to me though admittedly they'd be top tier in TOW or Oathmark
>>
>>97898883

Where the fuck did all of the old Stormvermin kits go? I thought when the new ones came out they'd be all over ebay but I can't find a single full set being sold nowadays. Other retired kits aren't like that.
>>
>>97899076
>look mom i did it again!
>>
>>97899310
Oddly enough I don't think many skaven players ran Stormvermin because they've been in a weird spot of not really having a role in the army. (Still kind of don't, semi-elite infantry in a chaff heavy army with guns feels a bit silly) on top of not being in any of the value boxes. IF you had stormvermin, you went out of your way to get them.

It's like trying to find 2nd hand Scythe hand ghosts or Sword ghosts for nighthaunt, if you bought them you're probably running them.
>>
>>97898605
They came from either the soul wars box set or the underworlds sprue, which I'm sure complicates things a little bit. I guess they (not unreasonably) felt like they had too many basic "bedsheet ghost with hand weapon" infantry options and decided to cut the trickiest one. Problem is these guys were also the most unique looking of all the basic nighthaunt, which sucks. Also I guess it helps they were always kind of bad so maybe they thought most people wouldn't have a lot anyway.
>>
>>97899598
>Also I guess it helps they were always kind of bad so maybe they thought most people wouldn't have a lot anyway.

Which feels silly, rules are literally the easiest part. Just make them not shit. I complained about similar shit before with underworlds where GW "refreshed" everything for "2nd edition" and then shit like the OG ironjawz or DoK warbands are still hot ass. Like, did someone at GW decide "Oh yeah it's this warbands identity to be useless"
>>
>>97899048
what did you put around them? i did my saurus' shields recently and struggled a bit to get the shading right so that it didnt get onto the gems.

Take basically every idk pity hero released in the past decade and exchange it for a single pity unit instead. I know it's not perfectly in the spirit of the tq, but damn.
Seriously they should've just ctrl+c ctrl+v the ikon 4 more times and turned that shit into a normal unit.
>>
>>97897575
>TQ
It's already over. The warlocks are gone, which is good, but instead of a khinerai hero or witch elves with bows or scorpion girls to act as monstrous cav every army apparently has to have now we instead got the blood hags which might as well be a middle finger.
>>
>TQ
While I wouldn’t say gossmid archers are my least favorite unit, they’ve got the most minor detail that makes me hate them.
The spite jet packs. It’s awful. Just give them normal fairy wings. Also don’t relegate spites to just be bugs model wise, have some humanoid shit in there. Also I’d redo the dryads to be more like wardancers. Just, more wooden.

i wish age of sigmar would focus less on the mythical clash of gods, unconquered magical realms and a mystical pre-Copernican firmament where the elemental disc worlds hang in each others skies and focus more on on small maps of local trade disputes and merchant routes, small baronies vying for regional territory over serfdoms and maps small enough that they could be walked in a week on foot

Thanks! Just 20/20 right now. I haven't played the Wardens outside of Spearhead yet, but I've found that they actually don't make too much of an issue for pile ins or combat in general and also surprisingly sturdy overall. I've only had one spear break and that was an unexplainable incident because I lightly brushed it with no force. Worst case scenario, you just turn them to the side. Yep. That's the one. Glad to see you stuck with the army.
You try mixing both golds yet? The gold I use is a 1:1 mix of Retri Gold and Vallejo Metal Color Aluminum. Haven't been able to find a shade like that yet, but Vallejo's new TMM Arcane Gold is close but still quite yellow. Still a very good gold, though.

Yeah if they had actually dedicated time to the world building.
At the same time, they don't need to retcon the setting as even with the "confusion" it's still the second best selling Wargame
>>
It annoys me how much Tzaangor Shamans blend into a Tzaangor Enlightened unit
>>
>>97901776
Yeah, but how does that grow the multimedia brand? That's the issue for GW, AoS could be #1 seller even and it'll still be a failure to GW in this department, their scope/focus is beyond just selling wargame miniatures.

How do the new Nurgle units play on the table? I have 10 of the old blightkings and I don’t want to rebase them so they’re gonna be nu-blightkings.

They seem not as tanky as before but very anti wizard and priest. Are they too niche or can I run ten even if my opponent isn’t too spell/prayer focused?

Are rotswords dual purpose hammer and anvil or mostly anvils? Also how do pestigors differ from plaguebearers outside of keyword synergies? Like do I run pestigors with foul hoof and plaguebearers with daemon characters? Are they both screen objective holders and if so what’s the relevance of pox wretches?
>>
>>97901896
Because they're retarded.
>>
>>97900923
Sir this a war game
>>
>>97901986
>but very anti wizard and priest

blightkings are sadly not very good at this either. their ability is short range, and they move 4" so they will rarely ever get in range of an actual wizard or preist barring exceptions like wizard monster heroes or the odd wizard unit that actually wants to fight (like.....evocators? idk many examples of that) so their combat profile bonuses will almost never come up, they will never actually get in range of a foot wizard or priest, cant survive a fight with big wizard monsters (like ushoran or allarielle) and even a spume outflank would likely be screened out of ever coming into contact with their target.

so ignoring all of those stats and abilities they'll never get to use, they end up being meaty but goblin level fragile slow melee units with a slightly above average melee profile in terms of attacks and accuracy, but low damage. they are sort of cheap-ish points per wound but not cheap enough for their warscroll

TLDR: without exaggeration, one of, if not THE, worst warscroll in the game. even against their preferred target you would be better off spending points on literally anything else in the book

moving onto other things, yes, rotswords are a sort of dual purpose hammer and anvil, or more like a fighty anvil since they lack a delivery system to be a proper hammer, they have access to lots of good buffs and debuffs and can play activation wars too.

i have yet to find a meaningful difference between the use case for pestigors or plaguebearers except that pestigors benifit a bit more from the mobility tricks of maggotkin and plaguebearers benefit more from reanimation/attrition mechanics. you can do some funny shit with pestigors like gutrot spume and 60 pestigors aboard the slime fleet deepstriking 120 wounds of goats behind enemy lines for under 1000pts

pox wretches im having a hard time getting a read on. they're kind of cheap chaff at 14 models for 100pts, but 100pts, basically disease suicide bombers
>>
>>97902155
* a little addendum there on the pestigor slime fleet thing, its probably not actually physically possible.

if i remember right all the models setting up with the slime need to be in a wholly within aura of spume, i cant remember if its 7" or 9" off the top of my head, but just based on base size you would probably struggle to fit more than 1 reinforced unit in there, idk, you'd need to screw around with that on a test table to see how many you could fit, but its almost definitely not 60, i think the pestigors are on 32s so that'd be pretty crowded, i doubt you could actually get 2 full units in
>>
>>97901457
Simple answer, they aren't. Unless of course you believe they squatted TOW.

Couldn't you still use them? Just kitbash a scythe or great sword on them and maybe change the base size and call them Grimghasts or Bladegheists.
>>
>>97902178
>>97902155
wow thanks for such a detailed reply. I appreciate it.

Most of the points in my army come from the 2 spearheads I built and the most recent christmas battleforce. I hav a glottkin too but I don't want to use it for my first games. Sucks my old blightkings are so wimpy now but I'm excited to utilize the my big flies.

>i have yet to find a meaningful difference between the use case for pestigors or plaguebearers except that pestigors benifit a bit more from the mobility tricks of maggotkin and plaguebearers benefit more from reanimation/attrition mechanics.

I have a hard time deciding how I feel about plaguebearers. I get they're akin to clanrats or stabbas that slow down enemies and clog up objectives, but do they need any kind of support? Like if I'm going to run 20 or 30 is it worth bringing a scrivener or Poxbringer or am I better off spending the points elswhere? I heard another anon say that it's not worth trying to buff up their damage.

Are they effective screens for rotswords? And who is the preferred foot hero wizard? Right now I only have a harbinger, a glottkin, and a rotbringer sorcerer for that kind of support.
>>
>>97901196
yeah I guess I'm retarded for not thinking of that earlier. thank you
>>
>>97902420
you can run them minimum support and they will do okay as a tarpit or you can invest more heavily into them with a poxbringer to double their damage, a spoilpox for more damage and control, a bilepiper speeds them up, and a great unclean one ressurects them. poxbringer especially is tremendous value for them with +1 attack and being a wizard at the insanely low cost of 90pts. he's a steal

if you want to run them unsupported, probably minimum size units of 10 will be fine. 20 wounds with a 5+ ward and -1 hit penalty will be hard to shift for anything but dedicated hammers and they're cheap at 130 for those 20 wounds, so you can afford to throw them in harms way without fear of losing some precious 500pt giga unit. you can squeeze in a 20 man unit if you want a wall of meat to protect your other wall of meat, but that may be excessive, and i wouldnt bother with all the support heroes if you are running mortal focused and just need some cheap screens

if you want to run them more supported, blocks of 20 are what you want, you'll get the most value on the stacked buffs and GUO ressurection that way, and even a reinforced unit is still only 260 which is dirt cheap for what you get, just a nightmare to remove. but if you're running a lot of them in big units you do kind of lean towards an all demon list

given your collection, it sounds like you are leaning more mortal oriented, the harbinger, glotkin and rotbringer sorcerer are all excellent heroes, and you can definitely use your plaguebearers/drones/nurglings as screens and interceptors for a unit of rotswords, so you'll want a unit of sloven knights, not too many, but enough to get the interaction from harbinger and play activation wars for your main line of troops.
>>
>>97902420
also with everything said, pretty much every unit in the maggotkin battletome with the exception of blightkings is like at least a B+ on viability, and most are in A tier or higher, its got fantastic internal balance and everything is competitively pointed, so as long as you avoid blightkings and that one foot hero dedicated to them (its one of the "lords of" guys, i forget which) you'll usually be fine, just look for your interactions of who buffs what and that tends to inform how to build the rest of your list, and since you have glottkin, i would start there, as thats a good solid anchor to base the rest of your force around
>>
>>97900990
Honestly I 100% thought they were going to be a goner with the battletome, but against all odds they stuck around. I'm not really sure what the plan is honestly, I think even gw wasn't sure what to do with them until the last minute (so to speak).
>>
The setting's lore was utterly worthless after the orb infernia thing where they just casually reset time on a specific place with a giant rat cannon.
Nothing matters after that. So good, a do-over was mandatory.
But also stop inflating the fucking base sizes. The figures don't need it GW, you are just making them spread legged.
>>
>>97902693
You don't know enough about it, it wasn't a casual thing in the slightest, it was a monumental event.
>>
>>97898272
>>97898273
Apparently grenadiers are not going to be able to be reinforced which kind of sucks.
>>
>>97902718
That's a given for warbands
>>
>>97901986
With a Lord of Blights, on a 3+, they can ignore rend... It's still a 5+ save so tanky against hammers if their only impact is high rend like Troggoths or something but it's not like they can punch back
>>
>>97902857
But are they actually getting Warcry rules?
>>
>>97902857
For a warband they seem very "unvaried". I mean there's the flamethrower guy, and one of the regular fusiliers has one of those volleyguns, but otherwise it's just all bardiche + gun innit? Sprue doesn't show much options besides headswaps either.
>>
>>
>>97903149
This one is pretty cool, anybody know where it is from?
>>
>>97902718
Shit actually?

I mean, I'm still probably gonna run 2 squads of them if they're the only thing in the army that can hit hard that isn't the cannon.

Also here's the top of some terrain I'm working on.

And finally a sentinel. I tried to make the bird a falcon. My desk lamp made the pic look super bright but I couldn’t do anything about it sadly

Cowabummer, but 10 man murder squads isn't too bad. Especially with them being kind of skirmishy. But who fucking knows how much they'll screw around with how cities works. (Probably not as much as I'd hope but who knows)

Yeah...
10-man squad is livable, at least it's not 5-man squads.

They'll still be usuable I think, that damage is just too tempting. Bit of a letdown though.

I'll wait and see what shows up, I've got a guy I'm spltting the box with anyways since he wanted skaven. (I think I've mentioned him a few times he's the guy who brought the all terrorgheist list to some big tourney) Might wind up seeing if anyone wants to swap so I can get their extra grenadiers and I'll give them some of the knights. (The knights look great but if they are 1 damage liberators, I'm good)

The knights ended up being the biggest disappointment of the reveal show to me. Probably foolish of me but I was really hoping they'd look more like the steel rook or the two command corps arch-knight variants than just... cavaliers on foot.

I think they look fine, I'm just not a fan of the statline. And steel rook and command corps knights are meant to be arch knights which I guess are the fancier version

Yeah, the unit champion is an arch-knight, but the normal guys aren't. Same story for the cavaliers.

Im leaning towards kitbashing galants out of the bret foot knights kit

realistically probably a cheaper and better way of doing it too. It's like 20 dudes for 80 something bucks. Go for it anon.

imo those look even worse
will probably be more economical though, you just know gw is going to charge $60+ for those 5 little gallants.
