== ACE CUSTOM GROUPBUILD ==

Build, customize, and paint a grunt mobile suit up for use by an ace pilot.
>You are taking the role of the Ace Pilot here - You're making the design choices when it comes to loadout, paint scheme, and suit customizations.
>Think about what your Ace specializes in, is he all in on offensive power, speed and maneuverability, or bulk and defense?
>While your pilot is an ace, he's not so special that he's getting super secret prototypes like Gundams or Mobile Armors. Keep your grunt relatively grounded to whatever setting it's from.

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

Not that it'd be a huge loss since the thing only cost like $13, but is there a way I can get on the phone and scream at someone to release it?

Also, semi-continuing the discussion last thread about buying clothing/underwear for the Nuke Matrix girlpla, goddamn this shit is actually pretty expensive. Either you pay like $20 for a single jacket, or pay massive shipping charges for a single set of underwear. It's almost cheaper to just sew your own doll clothes if you have access to a sewing machine. How do people afford these for more than just a single doll?
>>
>>11674955
the obviously buy shit in bulks

pimping out your model kits can get expensive, I just bought a diecast inner frame and decals for a Daban Strike gundam with the Gunbarrel strike pack I am going to build and I plan to get the new Minerva head they released specifically for it because the one you get from the kit looks a bit funky

is it expensive? yes but you get the joy of doing the customization yourself for your shit

for more questions on that regard maybe try the Busou Shinki general, it is specifically for all the girpla stuff so I guess people who lurk there may have more advice/suggestions for the fabric stuff

either that or look for online groups/sale/meeting points near you, you'd be surprised by how many people share the same hobby and the options some people offer for those niches

i keep fucking up my denubbing im such a fuckin chud all these small pieces like the skeleton parts or the visor.. im building the 30mm Raven/Nightcall model and I cut away from the piece/cut into the sprue and get these lil chunks of nub, but i try shaving them down and I feel like I am just pushing the piece around cause the chunk is so big but the part that connects to the piece is so tiny its basically me pushing the piece left and right so i end up withh stress marks on the pieces

MG Wing Zero Custom ver Ka. VS RG Wing Zero Gundam, who wins?

I typically build 1/144 kits but I was super disappointed with the RG Custom kit, floppy mess, first time I looked at a kit and thought it was too small. Bought the MG the other day and it's almost done, looks great.

Has a third party ever downsized a PG kit? Would be cool to get PG Strike in a smaller size, even the first ver would be nice.
>>
>>11676069
The MG Wing Zero Custom is one of the modern marvels of MG engineering, while the RG is old in the tooth and came out when Banda were still struggling with making the line work. So of course there are going to be massive differences.

Chinese bootlegging companies are incapable of downsizing to my knowledge, they lack the technique and know-how. They can only upscale smaller designs into bigger kits, from RG to 1/100 and from MG to 1/60. And even then they often have to compromise, the "1/100" God Gundam is bigger than what a genuine product would be.
>>
>>11674955

Does lineart for the GQX Zaku exist? I can't find shit.

>>
>>11676069
Ka. Very very solid kit that can hold poses extremely well.
>>
>>11676213
wtf are those colors?
>>
>>11676230
It's the recirculation version of the kit. Recircs are all black with some neon, like there's a green MG Unicorn and a blue Barbatos for example.
I have the original one too if that's more your flavour.
>>
>>11676245
Of course I would pick the one sideways image, oh well.
>>
>>11676112
I like it a lot, it's solid as fuck. Shame about the resizing, thanks for letting me know.
>>
>>11676069
MG by far, it is more solid and easier to pose

the RG is indeed flimsy, mine even broke at the joint at the back of one knee

>>
>>11676408
I should have been more specific, I was VS'ing the Ver Ka against the new RG Wing Zero that most recently came out. I built the RG Wing Zero Custom during covid and that was an immediate headache and floppy mess, extremely disappointing.

Super happy I picked up this MG, will grab the new RG later. First MG kit in 10+ years. Last one was either Zeta 2.0 or Astray Red, wicked difference in builds.
>>
>>11677053
As someone who just built that, that's a tough choice but I'd still go with Ka. It's not like RG TV Zero it's a bad kit, it's exceptional, all the parts hold together fine and a single arm can hold up both busters unlike the HG but I just like the MG more visually.
When you get the RG don't forget to grab Epyon too.

So I found a metal parts set for the inner frame for Wing Zero Ver Ka, I didn't know these were a thing. Is it just for better balance and to mitigate stress from the transformation? I don't think I be posing it a ton but I could imagine the wings sagging one day, do metal joints make a difference in that aspect?
>>
>>11677134
I used most of the metal parts for this one >>11676213 you can kind of see it poking out in the foot joints and I personally wouldn't bother unless you want the extra weight. The knees for the metal parts are horrendously loose for mine which is why I didn't use those.
>>
>>11677134
there are lots of diecast inner frames for various kits, ranging from MGs to RGs to even fucking bootlegs

This is the Daban Strike I'm building for which I got the diecast inner frame option set (specifically made for the thing lmao).

Pretty good so far, the only other time I did something similar was with a MG Zaku Warrior from Seed and the metal frame there really helped it with its balance, since the normal model is extremely light it has a hard time to even stand up with all its weapons
>>
I hate stickers. ok that's all.
>>
>>11680248
I HATE ZAKUS AND GMS
>>
Kind of new to this so sorry if it sounds stupid, but how would I best go about topcoating a Unicorn (Banshee MG ver Ka specifically)? Coat the inner frame separately and then matte coat the completed build in Unicorn mode? Or just hit the whole thing at once in Destroy mode?
>>
how long do you guys reckon until we get a RG Strike 2.0? I never owned the original but I imagine it'll end up like Rx-78-2, floppy. Maybe next year for the 25th anniversary? I never watched the shows so I dunno if they'd do strike 2.0 or freedom 2.0 instead.
>>
>>11680699
Odds are low that they'll do another 2.0 soon, the RX-78-2 gets it solely because it's the First Gundam, no other MS besides the Zaku II gets such exceptional treatment.

More likely, we're going to see a RG Mighty Strike Freedom before any Seed 2.0's. Just the Strike Freedom with the Type II parts and Proud Defender in place of its regular backpack. Also most likely we'll get RG Destiny Spec II at some point (stupid easy color swap just like the Force Impulse), and Infinite Justice 1 and 2.
>>
>>11680699
>>11680718
Next year is the 25th anniversary of SEED, so I'd expect something then, even if it isn't a 2.0.
>>
>>11680656

>>11680718
I figured the Zaku would get the next bit of special treatment, I wasn't sure if RX78 was a one off or not. I just wish we had an upscaled Strike RG like the 3.0 MG. MG RM looks too plain to me. I'd prefer the original PG Strike in 1/100 however... if only.

The red sword impulse also looks sick but I already have Force, Sword and Destiny Impulse so one extra impulse gundam was enough

progress update
the build is definitely way more intricate than the usual MG as this really copies the structure of the more complex Metal Build piece by piece

ther are some little fitting issues with the diecast parts of the legs but you just need to carefully follow the instructions in the order they are shown to avoid problems

by tomorrow it will be able to stand up so next it is a toss up between starting the weapons or the gunbarrel backpack
>>
>>11685741
Eh, I'm trying to save up for something but I still just dropped money on a MD Tsukiyomi, HG Gquuuux Rick Dom, 30mm plasma weapon set, FR Machu, some stands and a new compressor while sitting on about 12 kits already and I'm apparently a more tame ones.

Don't worry about it and just have fun.

I got a question for a dead stock model kit: Remember when Bandai made a model kit for One Piece's General Franky, and a missed opportunity nagging on me for over a decade? If they somehow manage to reissue the damn thing as a special edition of sorts, they have to goddamn add minifigures of the Black Rhino FR-U and Brachio Tank in-scale with the larger Thousand Sunny model kit.
>>
>>11685773
the Strike is such a handsome fella
>>
>>11686308
Daban perfectly copied the MB. The only thing missing are the various warning decals (you get a giant waterlisde of those for you to apply them) and the various small blue, green and gold paint apps the Bandai figure sports in various parts that help it make more eyecatching but is not a real dealbreaker, if anything, you could apply them if you want too

if anything the only complain I may have is that while most of the armor parts are undergated, some are not and end up having noticeable nubs, like in the front of the ankle armor

as all the parts already come prepainted, removing them would be quite hard, essentially requiring you to strip the paint and do the paintjob all over again
>>
>broke HG GQuX's arm
>nowhere with spare parts that wouldn't cost way too much just to ship

it do be cool but ain't got that money

went to the local gundam base popup store that opened on saturday. much bigger turnout than i (and very obviously the organizers) expected. result was a but of chaos. they didn't get the store ready in time and delayed the opening by an hour (announced 40min before initial opening) and the shelves were weird. they had a lot of built kits with prices on top of the shelves but only a fraction available and the boxes in the shelves didn't match, so it was a lot of searching. but still everything in stock by the top i got in. a shitton of o-bandai clear color kits, a lot of gundam base exclusives (but 0 of the ones they advertised...) and a few regular kits. p-bandai kits are all imported usually (80€ for an HG lmao), so seeing them for reasonable prices was neat.
>>
I picked up my first ever kit this weekend as New England is getting reamed with snow. Everything's going smooth so far. I'm a little slow at trimming nubs but I might just be overcautious.
>>
>>11687455
Nub work is the most important skill you can master as a beginner. It's fine if you're slow, as long as you're learning and improving at it.
>>
>>11687250
I 99% will, but in a few months when I go on vacation to Hong Kong and can purchase it without getting reamed by tariffs and the foreigners tax. By then, I'll also have a better idea of what the weaknesses of the kit are, and what kinds of third-party aftermarket kits I'll need to buy to reinforce/improve it. After all, if it's a $600 kit, then spending $50-100 on a metal frame isn't a huge deal by comparison.

Babby's first silicone mold. Still a decent amount of bubbles coming out in the vacuum chamber after almost an hour, I'm kind of concerned that I fucked up somewhere but I guess I'll accept the consequences of this being a first time attempt. I'm hoping the bubbles will stop sooner rather than later since this is 30A silicone that's supposed to set in 5 hours at this temperature, might take a bit longer since it's winter.

>bubbles coming out in the vacuum chamber after almost an hour
If you didn't mix it with a kitchen mixer or something all the bubbles should be gone within a few minutes. I think the longest I ever ran my vacuum chamber for was 15 min. Next time get a proper silicone and read the instructions.
>>
>>11693921
It was the cheapest 30A I could find on Amazon at the time, and it seemed like it would be a good idea to be able to see the resin inside. Maybe I made the wrong decision in buying 30A silicone, but from my research I thought it would be the best for making resin casts of Gunpla parts.
>>

30A is just hardness, it doesn't tell you much of anything.

My pic related >>11693921 is also 30A (https://www.smooth-on.com/products/mold-max-30/), but the important numbers for mold making are actually viscosity (should be low enough to degas easily) and tear/tensile strength (if you plan to use the mold more than once). And as usual, buying the cheapest of anything gets you what you pay for.

I recently got a set of stedi glass files and I'm having a tough time using them.
Previously, I only used dpspiae's glass files, and those were fairly simple to use, but I got these because they have the same "omnidirectional" design as the gunprimer raser. Not that I'm expecting these cheap ones to be as good, mind you.
The problem is that I often end up leaving some very noticeable scratches around the area rather than a clean and smooth finish. Sure, the nub marks are gone, but I end up having to sand down the piece to get rid of the scratches anyways. On top of that, there's times when the scratches are "regular" (they all look the same) and they're easy to remove by just doing a quick pass with the file, times when they're "irregular" and I need to sand them down, and times when everything is smooth and perfect and ten times better than if I used the dspiae files. Then I try to replicate what I did, and end up with one of the two flawed scenarios.
How the fuck am I supposed to use these things? They make me feel retarded.

All that said, traditional resin casting is kinda last century, 3D scanner/printer is the way of the future.
I threw out my expired resin and silicone last year and probably won't be buying more.

>How nasty/volatile is the solvent in panel liner?
Solvent based panel liners depend on the plastic mainly, ABS is very volatile and will disintegrate, PS is much more resistant and something like tamiya accent liner will usually dry out before it can do serious damage. Both the manual and runners will tell you what type of plastic they are. It's usually recommended to panel line while the parts are still on the runner to avoid stress cracking due to assembly.

Alternatively, how do you guys feel about panel lining with Gundam markers?
The gundam marker pens are fine, really. I wish they were thinner sometimes, as it's hard to get into little spots with them, but they work. And they're water-based iirc, so completely safe. An alternative is the pour-type markers, which are much less caustic than accent liner (still obliterates ABS though) and are very very easy to use.

I've seen people tell others to avoid Stedi's file. You might have to cough up the money for Gunprimer.

where and how much?

What's the point of building HG? They're so tiny and lack a ton of detail. If pricing is the issue buying a bootleg Daban MG would still be better bang for your buck.
>>
>>11694087
Some of us like small frames.
Some of us like adding those details using scribing chisels, pla plates, kitbashing, etc.

>Some of us like adding those details using scribing chisels, pla plates, kitbashing, etc.
Can't you do that with the MG as well? Assuming with better results?
>>
>>11694087
Quick builds if you don't have the time.
Adding the details yourself
And sometimes you just don't get it in RG/MG like the Burglarydog.

Not every MS design is going to have a MG kit.
Not every shelf is going to fit a 1/100 sized kit.
Not every person in the world enjoys designs full of panel lines.
>>
>>11693974
Is that really a big issue? I do a fine grit sanding after using my raser anyway just to get rid of the glossy patch.

So you can put them beside your 1/144 planes and tanks and buildings and ships and stuff. 1/100 is not really a thing outside gunpla.

I do like the Turn A Gundam but the HG kit doesn't really do it for me even tho most people say it's a good kit. I wish I was one of them.
>>
>>11693592
Once you get the kit can you post the color code for her blue tone please?
>>
>>11695169
What about the MG?
I don't have it personally but I heard it aged well.
>>
>>11694087
HG has the largest variety of kits, that alone has its own appeal.
Seriously bandai, 40 years since zeta and no MG asshimar? Fuck off.
>>
Just finished my first kit. I might try lining or painting one in the future but the construction is really the appeal for me. Gotta say that it's pretty back heavy with the wings and weapons, kind of hard to pose it without it tipping backwards. I suppose MGs and RGs are probably better in that regard?
>>
>>11695383
I just finish the Mg. It’s quite good. The ABS frame makes it solid. My only complaint is a few pieces were a bit loose so I just glued and cemented them like those opening panels in the back.
>>
>>11695860
That's what action bases are for. Aerial pose it, and it won't really matter how heavy the backpack is.

Because it's versatile. Do you paint, anon? Or scribe or add detail?
