Got this mostly complete Minecraft farm cottage from half priced books for $20. I think it was supposed to be like $50 but it had no price tag on it and took them like 10 minutes to price it so they gave me a discount (probably). Doesn’t come with Alex though so that’s -25 cents

I've done quite a few things to this simple lego classic house since I last posted it. Elevated it by two tiles (in preparation for the road set), added beige weathering to the walls, made a flower bed and took out the modern elements (aside from the clumps of grass / weeds from Neuschwanstein spare parts). I'd still like to make another building but I don't know how to start / which spare colours I could use. The roof would probably have to be flat or blue, and I have no idea what I'll do for a doorway as I only had the one classic blue door.

This... This looks like shit doesn't it? I like the frame but I hate how it cuts the bottom half like that.

This picture brings to mind something that's been bothering me about lego bust & character pieces: why pay a premium for a blocky and semi-bad lego version of a character when there is most likely a design true statue of that character for around the same price or less?
The Venom bust in the picture is 1000% better than either Lego Iron Man or Spidey, but people will fork out extra cash for the cubist version.
Why do that?

>I guess they're just gonna double down and keep shoving their multi-million dollar blunder in your face until you like it.
the blunder is not so much in the TECHNOLOGY, but the decision to charge customers for the development.
if those Smart Bricks were included in regularly-priced sets, people would be like "they're kinda neat."
Lego did not learn from Vidiyo and Hidden Side lessons. that's the real failure

Lego is INSANE
the more non-MINIFIG sets they do, the more likely some competition will gain that one spark they need to start pushing back.
all it will take is that one [thing] from that one [movie/show] and boom... Lego starts to crumble under their immense prices.
it might be a valid argument to say that would have happened anyway, and Lego is merely giving people what they want before someone beats them to it, but I still feel like it's dangerous waters for them to swim in

Just completed this Robo Master, Roboforce.
Love all the pieces on it. The transparency almost glows. Good printed plates. Its big. The minifigs look awesome. Its kind of retro, as a robot. The arm and tail articulation is the weak part, but it works. The ship lands on its back. Its gotta be one of the better space sets or robot vehicles. The pieces can easily build a ship.

I always feel like a scumbag sitting in the toy aisle with a code scanner trying to find the minifigs I want. like I just assume everyone around me thinks I'm grabbing every last tahu to scalp online when I'm really just trying to find a single copy of the witch for myself

>>
>>11797152
The vast majority of people who see you in the aisle probably don't have a clue what exactly you're doing. When they see a grown man glancing nervously from side to side fidgeting with a package in one hand and a phone in the other, their initial reaction is probably to think the creepy, shifty guy in the toy aisle is stealing something.

I found a box of old lego manuals in my attic. No longer have the lego associated with them. I ended up selling the manuals for A LOT. Now I kind of feel bad because the autist who paid for them massively overpaid but seemed determined to have them.
>>
>>
>>11797116
bionice was lego for about 5 years
technic is still lego, and even if bionicle dropped the technic branding after the first year, it still had gear functions until 2005/06
then it became actionfigure slop
>>
>>11797181
If you're going by technic functions I'd say only about 4 years for G1, 2005 barely counted, though G2 was actually full of gear functions and hit a great balance between technic and action figure stuff despite being CCBS, shame the lack of marketing, 2016 being fucking hideous, and competition with the star wars figs pushed by Disney killed it
>>
>>11796879
same reason people buy funko pops of spider-man and robocop when there’s a shitload of better quality figures
consistency
if you have a big collection that mixes different franchises having them all in one consistent format makes the collection look more uniform
>>
>>
>>
>>11797202
2005 did barely count, yeah, but it was still present despite being pretty pathetic
2015 is honestly one of the better years for bionicle strictly going off the sets, but i find ccbs to be too limiting for it to have been viable long term
i think it would've gone better if lego had kept the theme iced for another few years before trying it again so soon, and with disney forcing their shit as well
>>
>>
>>11797248
It got severely nerfed
During beta it was an infinite world like minecraft but world file sizes were massive (like gigabytes of raw data)
by the time the game launched the worlds were constrained to a very small area due to filesize and console performance limits
Plus there's minimal multiplayer support because lego can't compromise its family friendly image (see lego universe's dick detection costs)

>>
>>11797152
Don't feel bad, blame Lego. They thought they were smart in hiding the figures with boxes so people gamble on them and then it turns out technology has fucked them with a QR scanner.
Also I get that feeling that Tahu is the most abundant fig next to soccer and Ninjago shit.
>>
>>11797176
No, you probably sold them for cheap and now he's won. Classic manuals are worth a lot because they can complete loose sets and that makes them worth triple the price.
>But le manuals are in PDF on the Lego site!!
Not always, and usually in 2001 tier low resolution
>>
>>11797181
The gears stuff was the cool stuff. But those Throwbots did it before Bionicle. I know a lot of people here love them and it was their childhood but for me I hated them because you could not build anything good with them back in the day. I bought 1 Throwbot and it was awesome and I cherished it, but one was enough for me to not ever want more of that. Ironically I did end up getting some of those star wars buildable figures. The more mechanic looking ones looked fantastic like Grevious or Storm Troopers.
>>

Yeah, I was talking with some people about it a while ago and in doing so I came to the conclusion that the smart brick and its entire requisite apparatus adds about 20 bucks to a set's asking price. Given that LITERALLY EVERY EXISTING SMART BRICK SET is a star wars set that they have made multiple times, meaning that they were leaning ridiculously heavily on the gimmick to sell the sets

I have no context of this video or whatever but the female face variety is awful. They can totally have smirking female faces, it ends up overused because there's always like 1/2 or less the options for female faces. Which is confusing since the majority of accessories they make for figures themselves are female (hair + hat, hair, skirts)

I'm just teasing. I think people around here use "Legos" simply because it's what muh-population does even if Lego is terrified they will lose control of their actual name the same way Band-Aid and Q-Tip did with medical adhesive strips and whatever else Q-Tips were called. >>
>>
>>11798005
The original investment was $30k over 15 years and he was buying the sets before the whole "lego investing" idea blew up after the first UCS Falcon retired.
A lot of zoomers on this board don't know what Lego collecting was like prior to the mid-2000s, buying sealed sets to preserve was extremely uncommon and they barely appreciated, with only OG yellow box sets being seen as collector's items.
It wasn't until the 10179 Falcon retired and brought up to 5-10k on resale markets that articles about "Lego is a better investment than gold" started popping up. And it wasn't until covid that collectible speculation really took off.
Buying 3 10123 Cloud City sets to hold onto to for 20+ years is being way before the times.
They also had a legal agreement to consign the sets, it's just that the agreement wasn't honoured and the franchise owners threatened to draw out a legal battle the family who consigned the collection couldn't afford.

That's the only part I agree with you about. But no, it isn't hard to spend $2000 a year on Lego. With the amount of new sets that come out every month, we don't even need to bring high-end, high-dollar sets into the equation. We're literally talking about an average of just over $160 a month.
It isn't even unbelievable to spend like $100 a month, and then get like one set in the $400-$600 range in the year to make that number. If a person has other obligations, they definitely need to take care of them first, but what you are freaking out over is not even close to an unmanageable amount, or even that big of an amount of money. There is literally no defense on your part, unless our hypothetical person is totally broke and living paycheck to paycheck.

Just finished Jabba's sail barge and aside from the obvious criticisms, I was shocked with how badly designed the display plaque is. It has a giant blank spot that you have to put Jabba on attached directly to the plaque, but then the stand for all of the other figures is a completely separate piece? Why would they not make the plaque freestanding and just have Jabba with all the other figures? This basically forces you to display it with the sides closed unless you modify it since it would look weird and empty without Jabba inside.

Put him inside the sail barge where he belongs, just like all the rest of the minifigs.
Be a real man and display the set without the cringe plaque.
Also let's see some pics.
>aside from the obvious criticisms
Such as? (I live under a rock)
>>
>>11798339
The main criticisms levied against it are all in reference to the minifigures since the build itself is generally very good. The main ones are that the C3PO isn't the dual molded leg variant in such an expensive set, that Leia does actually have dual molded legs when she shouldn't because she's wearing a bikini in the scene so it makes her look like she has on swim trunks, and that Salacious Crumb has worse printing than previous iterations. It also just doesn't include enough minifigures. You can't really fill out the interior at all if you want a few figures on deck fighting Luke since you only get three goons and a Gammorean. The issues I have with it that I haven't really seen mentioned elsewhere are that the sails are way too close to the deck and it makes it difficult to set up a scene on the deck, and the deck itself is 95% tiled off which makes the previous issue even worse. I also don't like the design of the tail nub part because it's held on very poorly and comes off when I try to lift the entire model.
>>
>>11797809
I've got so many smug looking smirking faces in a drawer, because every time this happens I replace the shitty heads. Classic smily for unnamed soldiers/knights, something else for more significant figures. Maybe every once in a while I'll need a smug character but it's annoying that over half of my modern heads look like this.

All the plaques fucking suck. They always have except for shit like the helmets. Lego does some stupid shit but I'm not sure what's up with these. They're so hit and miss too like the smaller 1966 Batmobile comes with a stand for the vehicle yet the 1989 car doesn't. I think none of them come with it. There's also stuff like they'll pack in that 25th anniversary Lego Star Wars figure and it has its own stand AND a 2x4 plate that is entirely separate. And for what? I have the sail Barge but I'm not going to display the figures on the stand when I build it. They're all going inside.

>when I try to lift the entire model.
This is a new problem with NuLego that they keep making these huge flimsy sets BECAUSE they're not meant to be played with or moved. I just finished the Star Destroyer and it was probably one of the worst playsets they have made but one of the best Star Destroyer models they have ever made. I'm going to try and order some pieces to make a custom stand for it. It's a very creative build design wise but the two sides to make the triangle become very reliant at the front because there's nothing holding them together so the left and right sides that make the point can slightly move up or down.

>I have the sail Barge
Do you know what I am talking about with the tail nub part? I have watched a few reviews and not heard anyone comment about how easily the nub and the fins on either side fall off. The nub part looks like it's designed for you to grab, but it's only held on with some bracket pieces that aren't interlocked so they peel off the entire exterior part built onto the technic base. Then the fin on either side is only held in place with friction on a technic pin and aren't locked in place with pieces so they slide off easily. I can only really pick it up by scooping from underneath between the stand legs.
>>
>>11798404
I have not built it yet but yes, I would imagine that it needs to be held from the bottom. Most sets are like that now. You can't just pick it up from the idea or from the top because it shatters. I made this criticism a few threads ago about The Batman subway terminal batcave. Also reminds me of that Clone Wars wheel tank thing people complained about.

I love articulated Tahu so much it’s unreal.
Swapped the head and unearthed a black ball.
I badly want some orange and red half bushings, but they’re very rare (not sure the orange even exists and the red is exclusive to some massive Ferrari slop set). I might also buy some black 8L axles and cut them to 5L, because the current dark tan parts are chafing me a bit.
Altogether quite pleased with it, though. The silhouette and proportions are almost perfect as far as I’m concerned.

Incorrect. I was born in 1992. Familiarity breeds contempt. I don’t blame the state of the world on the millennials. They were set up by previous generations. If anything I put more blame on early Gen X for the cultural bullshit. But they are the largest generation and they were brainwashed in a perfect storm. I understand why they are this way, but I am sickened by them. Primarily any millennial browsing Reddit. That group in particular is a lost cause and should be ridiculed.

Building MOCs sounds like legit AIDS
>actually have to be good at building and designing
>if you want parts you have to take apart sets you actually like (otherwise why would you have bought them)
>alternative is to order through bricklink
>and deal with shipping bullshit
>and shipping times
>and wrong orders
>just so it ends up costing as much as an entire set anyways
Seems like a hassle. Unless you have entire bins and buckets of parts you got for pennies on marketplaces then I don't get the appeal. If I want to build something I just boot up Minecraft.
>>
>>11799327
You’re overthinking Mocs anon. Or you’re thinking you need to be a top 1% engineer/artist. You can buy any set and then throw the instructions in the trash and make something different. You don’t need to be an expert or anything.
>minecraft
It’s funny you say that because Minecraft sets are the best parts packs. You get tons of regular Lego bricks instead of overwhelming specialty parts. Then you can make a building or landscape. Good alternatives are the 3 in 1 sets or city sets

Why is lego not revealing the summer smart play pokemon sets?
Also, apparently lego spent around $800 million on the smart play (from conception to production and marketing) anf they are yet to get their investment back so I think price increases on all themes are inevitable at this point to recoup their loss.

Hello /lg/, I require your superpower of identifying fake Lego clones.
I have 2-3 different clones I need more information about.
1, First one I have nothing concrete about, only two hunches:
- Manufactory date is likely between 1985 and 1998.
- Country of origin is likely Germany, based on my completely unsubstantiated memories of always believing it's from Germany and reeking of german autism.
The bricks are quite elastic, especially the foundations / floors. The most striking feature are the bulbous studs. The plastic is very good quality and can clamp very strongly and satisfyingly. There are also doors and hinges included, but I forgot to take pictures of them. I possess zero documentation. The set could've been distributed in Eastern Europe.
Does anyone know the manufacturer, name of set or anything that could help me out?
>>
File: Mystery 02.jpg (702.2 KB)
>>11799423
2, Second one is very likely related to the first set, since the bricks' are compatible with the spiky things. Their intended use was likely roof tiling or fencing, despite being reminiscent of certain insulated construction bricks. There are various converters and connectors, since the grooves don't hold onto the spiky things too well unless multiple spikes are engaged.
I also had this train carriage in the same bag with them. This random piece could be a complete red herring, since while it's compatible, it's thematically different from housing materials. The axle and wheels are compatible on the surface, but the axle is too short to fit under the carriage with the wheels on.
>>
File: Mystery 03.jpg (901.3 KB)
>>11799425
3, Third one I actually sort of know what is, I just need more information. I have most of its pieces, but I no longer have the box.
Here is what I could piece together:
- The set is very similar to those made by Merkur, which is a czech toy company.
- The set is called "Junior-3" and was released in Hungary.
- Manufacturing date is before 2000, likely before 1998. Likely after 1980.
- The local distributor only returns a single hit, on a site that won't load, with a licence date between 1991.11.18 and 1993.??.?? (wish google cache was still around)
There is next to no information about Merkur and even less about Junior-3. It's entirely possible the set is a hungarian bootleg and / or school supplies. Maybe a czech anon could tell more and find the catalogue of the manufacturer.
Does anyone have any information about the company or the set in question? Like manufacturing date or anything? Has anyone here even heard about Merkur?
If someone really REALLY wants my pieces, I'd be happy to give them away just for the shipping fee.
>>

At least (for them) with the boomer trying to steal the Chrome C3PO they were able to pull "muh franchise" but with this corporate directly took over the store and has made every move to not return the stolen sets.
I really don't want to support this shitty company but their bulk bins unfortunately get filled with the bulk from marketplace lots that are too overpriced for the average Joe to buy and do end up with a lot of good pieces in there. Too bad the fags haven't done half priced bulk lately.

people will try and blame Nintendo, like Nintendo is the ones who would say "no no no, we don't want minifig Mario, it's got to be more like OUR Mario..." I don't think Nintendo has that much involvement or um... "power" (heh) to dictate the set designs (that may be wrong, I don't really know)

>Nintendo would have final say over how their IP is used
I'm sure Lego presents them with sets, and Nintendo would have an opportunity to say "that's cool, I don't see anything wrong with that. okay."
I highly doubt there's a Nintendo guy in the room and Lego asks "what kind of sets did you want? we can do giant sculptures, blind-box minifig series, Brickheads, even girly Friends sets if you want a Princess Peach Showtime! thing... Here's what we did with Sonic the Hedgehog, and that was doing pretty well for us..." and the Nintendo guy said "how about giant blocky thing that makes the noises and keeps score somehow? can you do that?!" and Lego goes "What?! that sounds like a lot of work, completely outside what we would normally do! But... okay, we'll see what we can come up with..."
I mean, it's possible, and maybe part of their original negotiations (?) but I still feel like most of the burden would be on Lego and not Nintendo to make those sorts of suggestions, especially how radically unique they turned out to be.
again, just speculation based on nothing more than common sense (heh). maybe there's a Lego or Nintendo exec/employee lurking here who can clear this up for us

Lego is a small family company and it’s too expensive to do custom molds for anything you actually want!
Dreamzzz, Friends, and Sonic can get tiny molded creatures and custom prints and heads but Mario and Pokémon can’t okay!

I’m not staking a claim one way or the other, just giving the other guy a life raft. Though I do think the US is making a lot of “unforced errors,” isolating itself politically and economically for no real reason or benefit, and China could position itself to pick up America’s leftovers.

Yeah, obviously. That said, the US is dependent on China for its galaxy of cheap geegaws, and I think we might genuinely see America’s Winter Palace moment if the treat spigot was turned off.

I’m not sure what you think I said, but I explicitly agreed China is reliant on the US. I just said Americans are also likely to revolt if they can’t get dirt cheap treats, and I don’t think any party wants to turn off the treat spigot.
Apart from that, I just noted that, as the US willingly and inexplicably steps back from its role as global hegemon and increasingly alienates trade partners, this opens up opportunity for China to pick up the pieces — for one notable example, several countries that had completely shut out Chinese EVs are now thinking of (or are in fact) loosening trade restrictions. But don’t get me wrong, what I’m laying out is speculative and long term. Right now, the US is far and away China’s biggest single-country buyer, and a hit to that export market would be pretty hard to recover from.
>how is China supposed to exercise influence without oil to maintain itself alone
Well, it’s not “alone,” and I’m suggesting it might try to fill in the economic and political gaps left by America’s abdication of its role. I don’t know what to make of the oil comment, unless we’re assuming Iran’s choking of the strait is going to continue well into the future. China’s also the undisputed world leader in renewables now (a title the US could well have claimed if it weren’t so shortsighted). And with this whole Iran thing, people/companies/nations are increasingly spooked about oil markets (and why shouldn’t they be), leaving renewables more alluring than they already were.

It’s a cute little set. I got two already.

Kek! Malding over a polybag because you know it’s only slightly smaller than that evee and a fraction of the price.

Most don’t. I do.

Real loser tactic of ignoring everything I laid out save one specific — largely incidental — example of loosening trade restrictions. And worse, you’ve completely misunderstood the purpose of the example. Whether this or that specific EV has “real R&D” (though, incidentally, I see no reliable sources for this Warren buffet “pyramid scheme” claim) is entirely immaterial to my point. I’m not staking any claim whatsoever as to the quality of these vehicles. I mention it only to give an example of loosening (or potentially loosening) trade barriers with China. The example could be bolts or basedbeans or Ming vases for all I care, and they could all be of substandard quality. It doesn’t make a bit of difference if nations are importing more of them, and the fact remains that nations are increasingly diversifying away from the US, and one aspect of that is eying China as a more and more reliable economic partner.
I’m not saying nations are buddying up to China with no reservations, and I’m not saying this WILL pan out (or that it will pan out any time soon). I’m only saying that America’s unforced errors are giving China more and more openings they could seize upon and leverage to build political and economic might on the world stage. This is a pretty measured, qualified claim, so I don’t know what’s got you so incensed.

The ghetto-est Walmart near me shut down for some totally inscrutable reason. And the others I’ve checked don’t appear to even stock the minifigures. No dregs, no old series, not even the shitty nascar blind boxes or whatever they were, nothing.

Oh but one fun fact about the shitty car “CMF” line: one of the cars comes with a piece that’s practically perfect for a tiny vulture droid head

Yeah, I’ll probably just have to bite the bullet and I’ll pick up a second or third if I happen to come across them IRL.
In the meantime, I’m taking wizardposting to strange new places.

Movie was ok. Basically just a long ass episode of the Mandalorian but has a bunch of Filoni slop.

No real Star Wars fan will actually look at that and go "Yes, this is what Star Wars is".

Luckily on that Xwing you can mod it easily to fit.

Also have this wizard moc I want to incorporate in the lager build, probably put it left of the dungeon, but I kind of want to put it in a tower, I’ll have to make it not smaller though

Are they going to battle like the star wars ship, where the position/angle doesn't matter and pressing the button just does instant damage to the opponent?

Beyond brick economy, how do people make an "investment" for flipping Lego product? How do you decide on what's going up after a set retires? I want to get my kids something but working 2 jobs just to pay the minimum that's required of life isn't doing it. I heard minifigs were the hottest thing and most approachable but I just don't understand which I should buy/hold for a profit? I know popular franchises and exclusivity for sets play a role in setting prices but something like an exclusive Donut seller or Darth Malak doesn't sound like it'll sell anything more than 5% of msrp. Not complaining about returns, just asking how do people decide what to buy. It always seems like stuff like comic con and other exclusive events is what moves minifigs. Any advice?

I like them all but shame on lego because these sets won't be available in my country (they will be available in 6 countries this year like star wars)

Must everything be a conspiracy? During the pandemic, there was a massive boom in “alternative investments” alongside a huge wave of comforting nostalgia. At this same time, there were also big stories about people making bank off pokemon cards and lego and old video games and NFTs (remember those?), and a bunch of poor people saw these sorts of “investments” as a means of getting rich (and quick!). That’s probably the extent of it.
Hype aside, it is nonetheless true that sealed Lego outperforms gold (or stocks and bonds more generally). Same with pokemon cards. The cards I bought years ago (not as an investment but because I’m just fond of them) have all massively outperformed my actual investments

>Must everything be a conspiracy?
It's not a conspiracy. Those data points were by a company hired by Lego to see the trends of Lego value over time. Then the news started to spin it as Lego being worth more than gold. Yeah, Lego increases in value but it usually needs like 10 years. Gold increases year by year because we need gold for computer components.

(speculation)
there's no possible way they can beat what Mega Bloks did. the Mega Bloks sets were all perfect on every level except the most important step of having the package say "LEGO". other than that one small important detail, Mega Bloks nailed the Pokemon building sets.
Lego had to do something "different" by default. if they even tried to match Mega Bloks, they would have failed

I went to see the crappy mando and the grogu film yesterday and why the fuck did lego make sets like this (which is missing an entire giant droid) and not make an arena set with buff hutt and a load of brick built monsters?
>>

When it comes to Pick a Brick orders do you guys design what you want first and then get the prices or get the pieces in abundance and then design?
>>11800421
Because Lego is retarded and Disney is even more retarded. These sets were probably designed a long time ago without Disney sending any other info or updates. A gladiator battle set might have looked really unique and colorful. I'm surprised they didn't make any of those droid fighters.
