FAQ
Q: I'm a total beginner. Where should I start?
A: Do the exercises in either "Keys to Drawing" by Bert Dodson or "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. Additionally, you can try the first few lessons of https://drawabox.com/ for building up muscle memory.

First time coloring without reference. The lighting’s fucked. I just couldn’t get it to look the way I want. I gave up on coloring her body and just went the Homestuck route with coloring shiny black things. Procreate was really fighting me in this one. I don’t understand how any of the tools work. Critique? Help?

Newbie, just had the idea of drawing birds, googled birds, and tried to sketch some, sometimes in 30s, sometimes a few min, without really thinking. Some turned out a bit better than others, now will try to see if I can figure out why.
Next step is wanna try drawing actual birds I'll see outside than just photos

Not many people can visualize the final piece before starting. If you can though, then sure, go for it. It's like tracing your hand except you're tracing off your mind on the paper/monitor.

>Are you basically asking "What's the point of sketching? Why not draw your best from the start?"?
That certainly seems to be the more accurate way to parse the post, though who can say for certain?
To answer the question, you sketch because even seasoned professionals who have done this shit for years to earn their bread make mistakes on a regular basis. Sure, they might be able to do a few recurring poses they're extremely familiar with on a "blind" first go without too many mistakes in proportions and anatomy, certainly not ones that'd easily be visible to the eyes of a beginner, but you give them anything outside of that repertoire and they're gonna do a quick bit of exploratory sketching before they commit to final linework. They know from hard-fought experience that "wasting" a little bit of time on prep work saves a lot wasted time on redrawing significant parts of the entire finished piece because you only noticed how badly fucked everything is when you when you pulled back from fiddling with detail work to look at the bigger picture way too late in the process.

Those first two on the top left look a bit off. Good if you were intentionally going for the look of a mannequin dangling from its strings, but needs work if you weren't. The first's main problem is the arms; they're just hanging there limply. Even something as simple as raising the (viewer's) right arm up would make the pose look more natural and dynamic. The second's feet don't match the vibe of the arms; either they should be doing similarly active things to imply a dancing pose or they should be slumped for a pose conveying exhaustion, precariously supported by a single arm. Speaking of the arm, consider raising the shoulder (don't forget to move the clavicle too) and squishing it towards the neck a little, looks a bit uncomfortable as it is now.

Good, clean work otherwise, though. However, as we've discussed a few times already, you're always doing too much construction sketching practice. I get that you've taken a break and need to shake off some rust, but don't get stuck in the ol' comfort zone for too long, now.

>>
>>80950255

>>

Because it means I sucked before. I wasted time being bad at something. That’s unacceptable. Only stupid idiots do that and stupid idiots are a shame to their parents and so don’t deserve their love.
>>
>>80951173
I hope you realize that's a pretty delusional view of it. It's the idiot's idea of what being a genius is like; only success, never failure because failure, no matter how insignificant, means they were never a genius, duh! That line of thinking has led to many downfalls as people holding this belief desperately try to always appear to be in the right no matter how badly they have to mangle the truth, and by extension their credibility, to do so rather than humbly accept their shortcomings, learn from the experience, and walk away only slightly worse for wear to fight another day.
>>
>>80951552
I never earned my parents’ love.
>>
>>80951969
Some parents make unreasonable demands for what they should have given far less conditionally to their own flesh and blood. Maybe they have their reasons, maybe they're even understandable ones, but they nevertheless failed in their one duty to you when you were at your most vulnerable. That means you have no obligation to hold up whatever end of the bargain they might deem their right to collect from you when they find themselves in need. The world might not be fair, but occasionally, you can get some satisfying payback if you're willing to be a little heartless.

>Ah-ah-aah, no touching. You just sit pretty while I do all the pleasuring for you, darlin'

Well, this got a bit out of hand, but when inspiration strikes, you gotta do what you gotta do. On the plus side, I did finally solve the desk space issue and can do digital somewhat comfortably again; turns out that spare foldable desk wasn't large enough to block off the whole room when I tested it out on a whim a few days ago. I do need to employ a bit more dexterity to get around, but that'll only be an issue on drunken evenings, for which I can just fold the thing back up again. Or when the clean-freaks of the household want to turn the place upside down yet again, like tomorrow. Just gotta be careful not to let it become an indispensable storage surface or it's gonna be a logistical nightmare every time it needs to go back in the corner.

I've had the basic idea for an avian cuntboy character knocking about the noggin' for a good long while, since very few species of bird actually come equipped with peckers IRL, with ducks and their corkscrews being a famously notable exception. Despite this deficiency, and the general tendency towards exuberant flamboyance in the males of many species, I'd imagine anthro versions would still act quite masculine and pursue the ladies like the rest of the lads and probably be better at it than most. Chicks dig pretty boys, after all. But of course, you'd also have your deviants. This fellow here like his girlfriends to be packing the heat he don't. Rarer of a character trait than you might think in this fandom, despite all the genderbendy nonsense that goes on. For some reason, this specific type of pairing is very uncommon. Guess both archetypes appeal to different audiences and there's precious little overlap between them. A bit tragic, really. Conceptually, they fit together perfectly but the disinterest of the masses damns their love to obscurity.

Tied for top three. "Their influences weren't of high skill level in the first place." "They achieved popularity early because their art didn't need to be as good as their ideas." "They find the process of practice art tedious and or get in their own way."

For anyone that draws trad (or even digital) does working smaller work somewhat better for you than larger?

you should ask for help with chat gpt or whatever to phrase your questions. are you asking if there's some benefit to having a smaller canvas while drawing?

Totally worth it though. The pillow is super high quality, and the cover is immaculate.

>>80965309
No. My brain is weird in that I tend to always use the whole canvas regardless of resolution, so I work big just so I have crisper lines. I know it can be helpful for some though.

futa and cuntboy are pretty similar conceptually but they are their fandoms are mirrored, if you go to the cuntboy thread on /d/ most posts are either yaoi or ftm stuff, pretty far from the use people give futa of putting a dick into the image without a man and or femdom. even people here react negatively to cuntboy.
I like how you can fit such tall characters into the frame without too much negative space, i struggle with 7 heads tall, cant imagine doing like 12 like you.

I usually work relatively small with traditional, no bigger than A4 paper. I have done A3 pieces in the past (both pencil and charcoal) in art class, however, and there are definitely advantages to working bigger too. It's just that it kinda requires a standing easel and plenty of elbow room so you can draw from the shoulder, so not something you can do comfortably without a dedicated art room.

The big thing about drawing small is thumbnailing. Great for experimenting with posing and quickly sanity-checking if an idea works as well on paper as it does in your head. If it looks to be working in tiny format, it's relatively easy to blow up to full size just by eyeballing it. It is possible to go too small, however; the middle piece in pic related's examples ended up with too much character overlap to make much visual sense of in so small a thumbnail, so I just moved on ahead with making it full sized (relatively speaking, it's still an A5 page I drew on).

With digital, size is much more of a moot point, especially if vectors are involved since those can be scaled losslessly. If you want to thumbnail on a larger canvas, you can just zoom out and by the time you're done, you've got a full-sized sketch ready to go (though the lines are likely to be wobbly and lopsided, so some redrawing will likely do you good). Alternatively, you can resize a small thumbnail sketch and then retrace it for a more detailed rough sketch. And, since scans or photos of traditional pieces tend to be fairly large canvases to begin with when opened on a digital drawing program, you can do easily do mixed media and sketch traditionally, finish digitally. Or even pull a double trick and sketch traditionally, refine linework digitally, then print back out and color traditionally.

>futa and cuntboy are pretty similar conceptually but they are their fandoms are mirrored
I know. Dickgirls appeal to straight men who like cock and cuntboys appeal to gay men who like pussy. Vanishingly small crowds already in their own right, so people who can see the appeal of both are one of the tiniest minorities on the planet. I happen to have a thing for catering to underserved niches, however, so that's perfect for me.

>I like how you can fit such tall characters into the frame without too much negative space, i struggle with 7 heads tall, cant imagine doing like 12 like you.
It ain't as easy as I make it look, let me tell ya. Besides the negative space issues, legs this long are a nightmare to pose in a way that looks even vaguely natural. But when you do manage to wrangle the bastards into proper position, oh boy is it worth the struggle. There's a reason digitigrade legs are the preferred configuration in this fandom.

Women's genital preferences tend to be quite flexible to begin with. It's the emotional charge of a given situation that really gets their motors going, which is why their usual preference for smut is the written word rather than visual media; easier to delve into the heads of characters when internal monologuing and narration are unobtrusive parts of the proceedings.

nah you can use any type of line quality as long as it's stylistically sound for what you want to go with. Hmmm Korean, I do read a lot of manwha but I've never pushed myself in that direction. Again I did believe that this was one of my weaker pieces as a drawing. Although I'm able to make a completed piece it feels like it lack cohesion within this drawing style/color style. Like when things focus on inks and linework it tends to look good and when things focus as a whole on painting, it also looks good, but this sorta in between point that I'm in right now for color feels like it lacks order.

Since this picture, I feel like I've gotten closer to the direction I want to be in, but still need some work in some areas. His a commission I'm working on.

Anatomy for Sculptor and Michael Hamptons "Designs and invention" along with tracing over the muscle groups of muscular real life people so you can get an idea of where they are and their general shapes is your friend.

Your work is extremely stylized to it's fetishistic nature, so there isn't anything I can really say about how it looks or it's anatomy or anything like that. I can however mention that your line quality is quite nice.

Been practising using landmarks and underlying anatomy for constructing the figure. First attempt was total piss but the 2nd attempt it started to click. I'm starting to understand analysing the body better. Still got a long way to go but I think this method for drawing a figure is much better than what I did before.

You're doing a very good job. just try to keep a wider profiling for the torso shape (Specifical for the Tifa one It's fairly thin) and the pelvic box should probably extend all up to probably like.. under the navel. You should also look and try this with some really skinny people so their skeletal structure is far more exposed.

That transition from the midpart to the hip is far more noticeable but this woman just has a really defined pelvis

The purple and green cubes were just other examples of using similar colors for shading.

Weed anon. Or ig homeless anon now lol. Things have been rough, as well as midterms are coming up so i have more shit to do/work on. On the positive, i did get a job that starts in a couple weeks, so homeless anon no more maybe. I've just been stressing at art, thinking "maybe I ain't built for this", and explored that headspace for a bit and tried figuring out why i even wanted to start drawing to begin with, what my goals were, if they were even feasible for someone like me as well as if they were worthwhile. Funnily enough however, i didn't miss a day of drawing. Probably just beat that daily urge into me. The other messages are helpful though, thank you.

And what conclusion did you come to, or are you still evaluating?

Hello, Simski here.
I like this community so sorry for not having checked in on you guys in a while. I saw some post speculate that I sorta got chased off after making that Maga Pecan animation, and partially you're correct that what I intended to be a silly shitpost for fun got WAY more intense hatred than I could have imagined. Likewise I've also tried to keep a lower profile online because of some issues I've had with cyberstalkers recently (aside from that one guy on /v/ that thinks single every poster that dislikes crash 4 is me I think most of them have fucked off by now)

Though the biggest reason I haven't really posted here in a while have just been that as a primarily TDM animation oriented artist most of my struggles these days are so niche that I don't know if I could find help for them even if I asked, and in some other cases (like this animation) I couldn't really ask for help because I wanted to keep the idea a secret until I was finished.

Anyway right now I'm first of all making an attempt to actually finish one of my old abandoned sfw animations, the hope being that I could maybe get it done before valentine's day (but don't count on it).

Also my friend gifted me Hello Kitty Island Adventure for Christmas and I've been pretty hooked on that, so here's a silly little WIP animation of Piano I drew 2 days ago

Hm, I remember when I was talking to you about your goals and told you times like this would come. You gotta take your breaks when you can nigga, find OTHER artist you admire, goals closer to yourself that you can achieve. Every artist needs success and if you never feel like you're doing anything beyond practice you're gonna start feeling some type of way.

>>81025880
Not much of an animator, but I gotta respect doing every frame by hand along with the colors. Don't know who you are, but AC work is some of my most guiltiest of pleasure so it's lovely to see you around
>>
>>81028412
it's a fundamentally different mindset. I understand what you're trying to say, but my mindset isn't from attaining small levels of success, but whether or not i feel like what i do is worth doing. My successes are offset from the fact i dislike who i am and what i think i can achieve, which makes things murkier, and probably means i need to think about myself personally.
>>
>>81028639
No crime in taking the personal time required to find yourself. Take as long as a break as you need. Just know that this shit isn't a race, you aren't anymore or less of a person. Just take it easy, especially in your trying times.
>>
>>81028639
So are you just saying you don't believe in yourself?
>>
>>81028680
I can try to think during downtime, but i don't really do "breaks". Feels really weird to take a break cause it opens up alot of random free time

>>81028688
essentially yeah
>>
>>81028412
>Not much of an animator, but I gotta respect doing every frame by hand along with the colors.
Thanks. Yeah doing the shading between frames is a real pain in the ass because it's damn hard to get the airbrush consistent. Which is why most of my animations skip that part, but occasionally I want to put in the extra effort. I mostly draw Pecan, but I've been trying to branch out a little more lately.
>>
>>81025880
You have some other opinions that I'm sure scared people off of you (me included) but that's neither here nor there. Artist to artist at least, hope you've been doing okay dude.
>>
Idk how to feel about this. It looks a good and the person I drew it for loved it but at no point was the process for this enjoyable. It was such a miserable slog the entire way. I need to work out a different workflow
>>
>>80926772
Carapace implies that lighting is coming from the right but the clothes imply that it's coming from the left. That's probably why it looks awkward. The shape implied by shading around her tummy also seems to look concave, rather than something that would fill the dress.
