It's basically a small baby update from what I gather, mainly just new hangout options with Boss and some additional wolves - not sure if it's going to be the update for the full, definitive public release for the game or if he's saving that for later since he implied v4.1 was supposed to be the conclusion to Act 1.

Based on what he just posted on discord, he's actually planning on doing three whole public releases in a single year. We're going to get the finale to Act 1 in the next several updates (presumably) then we get the Act 1 epilogue, and finally we start Act 2.

Given how long it takes for him to do a single public release and how much time it takes for the patreon builds at times, I'm not super optimistic he can keep to this timeline.

Frankly speaking, if Roads makes it so every update post-v4.1 is dedicated to one of his milestones (and I mean, starting from right now) he should be able to reach all of them by May if we say that he hasnt written anything for Fangs & Fables yet and hes gonna take the rest of February to do that. Assuming that he doesn't deviate or try to 'expand' on anything before getting the big milestones outta the way, it's a relatively feasible goal with how his development cycle works. The problem is that Roads is never this reasonable and will likely get distracted or want to make a whole bunch of new sideplots, mechanics and characters who won't get expanded on for months on end and will further detract from the milestones, on top of probably wanting to add shit to characters he's already started (Sage, Rookie, Arson, Locke, Plantwolf, etc). So we could be looking at the milestones not getting started until well into June - July if not even later.

It’s difficult to put to words without diving into some specific implementation outline. What I think is lacking is called orthogonality in programming language design, features you can put together to open up combinatorial possibilities. Rather than just storing a number pointing to a place in a dialog tree save the whole history character has experienced. Then layer analytical functions that can aggregate stats. Out of various patterns you can squeeze out parameters like trust or annoyance. Based on parameters dialog options would become available. But, again, I’m laying out something very specific. If you just read this and implement it to the t, characters will be limited to first order knowledge. In a true sandbox “what he knows that I know” should be expected for true chaos.

Making just your average conventional VN seems like a rather boring idea, so I can't summon much motivation for coming up with a design document for one, but anything more complex would require learning a fair bit of coding from scratch. Maybe something like a point & click adventure would make for an alright compromise in terms of difficulty, but again, I'm not sure how to make that all that interesting without doing something like Quest for Glory, which would require incorporating stats and encounters and shit.
