So, for those interested in restoring the HD textures for Wilds... This mod works. LOOK AT THAT WOOD, JUST LOOK AT IT. Just need to follow the instructions (or do the classic "hard link method" if you ever done it when uncompressing textures).

I asked the modder about it, and he replied that the textures included in this pak are only the ALBD (for everything). That means, it's just the "colors". Normal maps and everything else use original textures from the High setting. This is because Capcom made it so that the game won't fit more textures in VRAM no matter what. Still, the quality is improved a lot, so I think it's worth it.

I think that Monster and Armor normal/emissive map textures could be restored too, but I guess I'll have to that myself. If I ever do this, I'll share it here, if anyone is interested.

That's the neat part - you don't. A Valstrax has incredible vision - not only can they spot targets from incredibly long distances, but they're so good at tracking their movements that they can laser-focus in on them WHILE MOVING AT MACH 3. Think about that for a second.
You can try using a Ghillie Mantle, but I doubt that would be very effective unless you're also standing in brush and are completely motionless (that means no breathing). Really, though, you're better off just accepting the inevitable.

You're underestimating the ghillie mantle here. What's stopping you from carrying multiple of them and swapping them when they run out of charge? When your life is on the line, you don't have to follow those silly guild regulations.

Too bad... aren't the High settings just 1000x2000 while they could be 2000x4000 with the real HD pack? That's like just 1/4th of what we had previously. I wasn't sure how noticeable the difference would be, so I made a quick comparison.

As expected, the lighting reflections are much more blocky due to the lower resolution. Not nearly noticable during a hunt (to be fair, the 4k "colors" aren't either), but they absolutely make a difference for pretty screenshots and close ups like this. There's only so much a model can be improved by HD colors if the light reflections aren't matching the detail. You can see this very well with the scales near the beak line.

I didn't experience much texture popping with the old HD pack, so I think I'll stick with that one until the next big patch breaks it. Should you decide to make a full restoration, I'd definitely be interested.

Yeah I think this modded pak can include the normal maps for the monsters and armors/weapons easily. Or so I hope. What's stopping me now is that the tools to extract the old 4K .pak need to be compiled using stupid visual studio because of course everyone uses .NET for any interesting modding tool (jesus fucking christ why?).

Anyway, my plan is to do:
- keep Capcom's DLC file, but in the root
- add this new pak with the textures we want to improve (ALBD + NRRO + Emission).

By doing this, we will have the 4K textures for the important stuff, and keep whatever capcom did for the rest which sometimes are "just a bit better" than High. (contrary to what that mod does, which is literally deleting the capcom's dlc pak, and we miss some textures by doing that)

Monsters don't have a need for worldly goods, but if they could they would probably fetch a particularly shiny gem, or one of their own scale.
But probably they would allow you to hang out with them when they're the most vulnerable, like when sunbathing or sleeping. They might let you pet them (and they will secretely love it despite all their grumbling)

Jumped back and forth between GU and Stories after World ended. Waited for Rise to release on PC, so I had some time to kill.
Will probably revisit GU again after the Wilds expansion. Playing solo against multiplayer adjusted monsters is a nice challenge and I still have a few of the endgame monsters waiting for me.

Well, I guess I figured out (maybe) a way to tell if a monster you encounter can be a monstie. In the in-game bestiary in theory only the ones that can be monsties let you check what the different element recolors look like.

Wild Hearts unironically got it right by letting you pet the endemic life and harmless small monsters if you stealthily approached them, and even incentivizing it by giving you parts from a different loot table from them for doing so. Capcom should follow suit, really lean into the aspect that we're protecting the ecosystem rather than just blowing away everything that looks at us wrong.

I actually don't have any favorites when it comes to that. Course the monsters with fur would be exponentially more pleasant to touch, but I'm of the opinion that all monsters deserve pets because we know with actual animals that they don't need fur to enjoy it.
