Demolishing URANUS Building after the quake left it leaning took two weeks. All highways into and out of Hualien were closed, yet life in the city continued as normal. How? The railroads were open.

My bad, that was a building that collapsed in Keelung, where I was staying when the quake hit. My hotel rumbled very loudly, and plaster popped out of the walls in multiple places. I stayed in bed and wondered if the whole thing would come crashing down. But it didn't.

Nine people got trapped in a cave following this earthquake. Sounds fun
The workers at my hotel resumed drilling concrete about 30 seconds after the quake subsided. I could hear a quiet hubbub from the street below where many people had left their buildings to congregate. But normal commerce resumed after less than ten minutes.

I went in late August/early September. Got an absolutely horrific sun/sweat rash and had to spend my last two days in the hotel applying various ointments because even stepping into sunlight aggravated it. I had a lot of fun before that, though. Beautiful country.

I live in Japan. Taiwan has better food, especially street food, and a greater variety as well. Japan has bidets - might not seem like a big deal at first but to me they're an integral part of life at this point. In many other respects Taiwan is basically Japan with Chinese people, at least insofar as Taipei is concerned. There were probably a dozen times I caught myself thinking "oh, this neighborhood looks like that one place in Tokyo" or "this reminds me of when I was walking in Osaka." IMO Taiwan has better English support if you need that kind of thing. Taiwanese people were more or less just as shy as Japanese people in Japan, but the Japanese tourists I met in Taiwan were nothing like they are back home, very chill, chatty, and friendly. Might just be a vacation mentality.
Taiwanese McDonald's was better, too.
>>
>>2832981
>no bidets
Damn, are the seats heated at least? My body does real well in Japan and actually i start to have a lot of no wipe shits unlike here in the US . I have hot grease shits
Were the locals chill and quiete like Japaanese or loud and annoying like Chinese?
How much did the hotel rooms that you rubbed lotion on your skin cost?
>>
>>2833058
>Damn, are the seats heated at least
My hotel's were not, but it was only a 3 star. I've heard the really nice hotels do have bidets but can't confirm. I remember the only bidet I saw was airside at the airport on my way back to Japan.
>Were the locals chill and quiete like Japaanese or loud and annoying like Chinese?
When I was just out and about they were very quiet and polite, and basically kept to themselves. The metro was also very much like in Japan, minimal talking and noise. No gaijin bubble like in Japan, though. At restaurants, however - especially the more hole in the wall type places and night market food courts - there was a lot of chatter. I can't speak Chinese so any time I would hear people ordering it would sound like they were arguing with the cashier.
>How much did the hotel rooms that you rubbed lotion on your skin cost?
IIRC it was just a touch over 250 USD for 5 days and 5 nights. Wasn't a bad hotel by any means, like I said it was 3 stars, basically the Taiwanese equivalent of a standard Japanese business hotel like APA or Dormy Inn. Location was smack dab in the middle of Ximindeng.
Also something I remembered as I was writing this review, apparently a lot of businesses there offer incentives or rewards for their customers to glaze them on social media, so you'll find the most random restaurants, museums, hotels, bars, etc. with thousands if not tens of thousands of 5* reviews on Google Maps and other travel sites. Be aware of that and do your due diligence when planning.

I live in Taiwan and everywhere I have been to has a bidet. Can't comment on Japan because I haven't been there but I think the general feeling here is that Taiwanese are more friendly than Japanese but Japan is a cleaner and less chaotic place. Taiwanese cities are not pretty to look at and they can be a bit dangerous with the scooters and lack of sidewalks on some streets.
>>
>>
>>
>>2833058
In Taiwan I had an old street bum try to steal my bag at an open-air laundromat while I was sitting inside, and a drunk youth sped his motorcycle onto the sidewalk at me, parked and then half fell off his motorbike and flung his helmet into the ground as I was walking by. I admonished him in Spanish (for the lulz) and some other old people walking nearby gave him stern looks but didn't say anything.

My anecdote
>3 years in Taipei, lived in Guting/Dongmen area
Been to every corner of the country including surrounding islands except for Kinmen. Didn't learn the language, local girlfriend was my full time tour guide.
>4 years in Japan, lived in Tokyo/Minato/Shinagawa area for 2, countryside for 2
Been to every corner as well except for Hokkaido. Speak the language, have/had multiple full time local tour guides.
I don't know what kind of person you are and what you want to do when visiting a foreign country, but here's how I would compare Taipei vs Tokyo.
>food
Taipei no contest. Obviously subjective, you might like raw fish more but I'm not a fan.
>women
Taipei no contest, also subjective. Tokyo has more variety but fuck me if the women around City Hall/Xiangshan/Zhongshan aren't all the mean looking hot chick with sharp eye liner type. Per capita they're more open to gyms and fitness in general.
>cycling
Taipei. Bike paths and actual bike lanes. Rental bikes in almost every train/bus stop with a single tap of your transit card.
>hikes
Taipei is surrounded by mountains. Easy access to trailheads. Open/public/natural hot springs and other watering holes. Japan is famous for hot springs but it's a very sterilized experience inside some kind of establishment. Good luck jumping in a lake/river/waterfall, fun patrol will be on your ass shortly. Meanwhile all I had to do was drive up Yangmingshan, go to any trailhead with some water feature and guaranteed I will find other people having fun and getting wet.
>weather
Dog shit in Taipei. Overcast/rainy winter. The entirety of January can go by without the sun every showing up.
>hostels
No clue.
Overall, I like Japan more but I'm living life like a hermit in the woods, but if I had to stay in a city and choose between Taipei or Tokyo, then it's Taipei all the way.
If there's one thing I can suggest, I would suggest not visiting Taipei during winter. A few hours south and you'll find yourself in a sunny place.
>>
>>
>>2833386
I like outdoorsy stuff so that's what I can recommend. I've never been to these places during winter so things might be different.
Central would be Nantou, Sun Moon Lake area.
Southern has to be Kenting. The main road turns into a night market at night.
How long will you be in Taiwan for? If you have a few extra days, stop by Taichung and go to DIVECUBE HOTEL 台中潛立方. Hotel with an indoor pool, 20 or 30 meters deep I can't remember. Take a scuba or freediving course, get a basic license in a day or two, maybe on your next trip you'll find yourself with some diving opportunities.
These are all easily accessible places with public transport.

You don't have to believe and I'm not here to convince you either.
If you think Chinese is easier, then I'm happy for you. Personally speaking from my own experience, I find Japanese much easier just based on the fact that I can absorb new things on a daily basis by being able to listen to conversations, read Kana, know how to ask questions and describe things if I don't know the right word. Would things have been different if I reached this level in Chinese? Maybe, not that it matters to me anymore.

>minimum spend
The max I've ever seen is a few hundred which is weird because it's like 2 beers in fancy places but then I saw locals turn up and order literally the bare minimum with 5 people and sit there for half the night so think it's probably fair.
Drinks are completely overpriced when going out compared to just buying them in familymart and drinking there on their admittedly more comfortable stools
>>
>>
>>2833795
>compared to just buying them in familymart
Do you understand how lucky you are to live in a place where you can buy a dollar beer at a 7/11 and drink it right then and there, or sit on the front stoop and people-watch. This is the peak of human happiness; think of us, all of us, who suffer for the want of this simple, yet immeasurable joy. Take it for granted and I'll kill you.

Been to both countries a handful of times
You've made the right decision to go at winter, Taiwan's a tropical island and summer is torture. In general the people are more laid-back and chill, food quality is comparable to Japan if not better, and cheaper. The infrastructure and general visual appeal is poorer. The place is safe from a crime perspective, but they really haven't designed the roads and walks to be friendly to pedestrians. Also pretty much every building has this grimy, smudgy look on the walls thanks to the humid climate.

I was in Taiwan recently for a few weeks around the end of September. It feels like early 2000s aesthetic of Japan but filled with Chinese people with the clash of Western influence. Certainly unique.
Both places have some similarities-- quiet, polite, reserved people, no trash cans but very little litter, 7/11s on every other corner (Taiwan also has Family Marts), good public transit, generally prompt and organized and clean, and very safe
Some ways Taiwan felt a little behind the times, some spaces felt cluttered, like people hang on to too much junk. Many places still cash only. But a pretty relaxed place overall.
Anons here seem to like Taiwan food better than Japan, but for me it was the opposite. There also seems to be no health code of any kind in Taiwan.
I had a hard time finding bidets in Taiwan and outside of Tapei would still find squat toilets and many without toilet paper (in Keelung for example)
Alcohol rules are non existent, it can be sold 24/7 but there isn't much of a bar culture. The closet place I could find were "rechao" restaurants and the night markets were fun too. Another plus, Taiwan is less expensive than Japan.
Coomers could easily find a better desto, but it's def a unique holiday due to the influence of cultures.

In Taipei city itself? I'd say the National Palace Museum being a must-go, there are artifacts there you won't find in China, brought over by the KMT after the civil war.
Or you can probably check out Taipei 101 (tallest building in the world for a brief time in history). If you're a tech geek, then the Guanghua tech mall
Otherwise my best advise it not to spend all your time in Taipei city. Take a ride to Tamsui, or Gaosiung, etc, and check out the sea side. If you're ready to rent a car, you can plan your seaside drive

>If you dropped me in China I'd leave the plastic cities to look for a vibe similar to Taipei.
the similar vibe is found in all the tier 2 cities. just replace the 101 building with a China Telecom 40 story tower and taipei is a small provincial capital.

Unless you are horrendously retarded China isn't really that difficult to travel in, even tier 3 cities where you're the only white person
Problem is most tourists are retarded and think the world revolves around them rather than putting in the effort required.
I wouldn't consider Taiwan that much easier apart from many speaking English and no visa issues. Monthly rentals are a massive pain compared to other Asian countries.

I feel like I should visit Taiwan before, well, things get "hot" because local dictators just can't stay sit and be happy with what they already have.
I already went to japan 3 times. What would be a nice itinerary, for, say 2 weeks of holidays?
I'm usually not too much of a modern city guy, bars and nightlife aren't my thing at all, but despite this, I ended up liking Tokyo. Mainly because I'm a /p/fag and I feel Taipei would give me the same vibes, which is good in my book. So lets say at least 5 days in Tapei, counting the arrival day and departure day.
What can I visit next? I'm very much into nature/hiking, are Toroko gorges still closed down due to that earthquake a few years ago?
Also ideally I want to see kino mountainous coastal views, so I guess the area facing the pacific ocean would fit the bill.
Any other nice areas/national parks/whatever I could visit?
Ideally I don't want to rent a car, I already hate driving at home, it's even worse in a foreign country. This is why I like going to Japan, you can go to a lot of place just by train, even in their mountainous areas.

The general Taipei experience for someone without a family is a sharehouse. Did 2 months in a placd with 3 other rooms.
Definitely different to share housing in the west though, you could sorta never speak to any of them if you wanted and no one would mind or think much of it.
We would go out for food and they'd tolerate my shit mandarin though. Was sweet actually, instant local friends in a way.
>>
>>2843963

I'd do the NPM and CKS memorial hall in the same day (the museum inside isn't that big), you get to take in the view, and you can then go to Ximen and shit which is basically Taiwan's smaller cuter and strangely enough, cleaner - version of Shibuya
>>2840624
Yeah what I like about Taipei and Taiwan in general is that it has layers and one travel experience alone doesn't get you everything. There is a pretty big bar culture, but it takes knowing a little mandarin and hanging around the locals to figure those places out, especially since they're grouped in certain neighborhood that you might just simply miss altogether.
>>2843921
you don't really need that homestay shit. Half of taiwan is made of people eager to do a "language exchange", and i'm not talking about sex here - people are just that curious about foreigners and sometimes it is a good pretext to not haev to deal with the loneliness.
Contrary to what the socially awkwards tards in taiwan think, it is really that easy to meet people and make friends. It's just that Taiwanese people (and asians in general) only befriend someone if they have a good reason to. A language exchange is a good one, but there are many ways to skin a cat.
As for your HSK, get ready to learn a whole new way of reading, writing and pronouncing Chinese that you're probably not ready to deal with. I do recommend you stick with your mainland pronunciation. It'll help with clarity, and no one will think much of it (you're just a foreigner with a foreign accent), and to refuse any course that involves learning bopomofo, as pinyin is already as good as it for us white men.
>>
>>2844509
>get ready to learn a whole new way of reading, writing and pronouncing Chinese
Yes, it seems like everyone pronounces things differently. I don't know if I should imitate them, or continue speaking how I've learnt. E.g. this girl says "Chi shxi (??) lai yi ding fei chang hao chi" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttqbu7C42wE&t=465s. And then the X is either pronounced like Sh or Ch or X. In german class half the kids said Ich and the other half said Ish, and the teach didn't correct anyone. I didn't enjoy that non-consensus on just a common word.
>pinyin is already as good as it for us white men
I haven't heard of bopomofo before, interesting pinyin proved insufficient for some people (or did pinyin not make it's way to them in time, so they invented their own?)
>it takes knowing a little mandarin and hanging around the locals
I'm looking forward to this, I spent too much time being a lang-let in other countries. It was a big reason for choosing china as a travel destination.

This is literally the only Asian country where i've had success with with some sort of dating as a black person. My Taiwanese girlfriend is planning on moving in with me in the coming weeks. This country rules. Thailand and Japan were a bust, and most women there were either just in for sex or to take advantage of western money. Taiwan is the place to go for dating on equal footing. I'm kinda disappointed I can't 简体中文maxx here. I might have to go to the mainland, unbeknownst to these friendly folks

One old couple was like "so why did you pick Taiwan to visit?" and I haven't talked to anyone in months, right. So I just fumbled "oh I like Chinese culture" and painted a stranger portrait of myself. The witty response would've been "Why not Taiwan?". I had so many thoughts though. Like "oh, I've been everywhere near here, and now I'm finally picking Taiwan. Oh and btw, I'm going to the mainland too." Tricky to balance so many thoughts and still respond

So people are curious about your accent - you could've easily reined the conversation to become an opportunity to appreciate geographical differences within the same language.

Is it common for your guys' easycard to not tap quickly at places other than train stations? I gotta retry 4 times, then I end up paying with 现金
The parks here are really nice. Peaceful, despite the nearby freeways.
When I start off a conversation in Chinese, people know English, or they don't know either language. When I start off asking if they speak 汉语, they don't. Too funny.
Met lots nice people in public.
A nice auntie talked about politics with me. The thoughts of mass Indian migration live in her mind, like many posters here (and on /g/). I thought that was remarkable.
I asked a thick goth girl where the closest park was. She pulled out her phone to showed me.

If you're interested, there's a SEA nucleus in one of the underground shopping arcades by central station where you can sample Indonesian, Filipino, or Vietnam food. Their price was quite good if I remember correctly

I’m in Taipei right now and need to send a suitcase back to Europe.
Has anyone done this before and knows what the best option is?
Normal package at the post office would probably be cheapest but I would have to put it in a big cardboard box and from what I found online they don‘t sell sizes that big.
And I have no idea where to get a big enough box in this country.
Any advice would be appreciated

Taipei is definitely not vibrant in the Third World sense. People are colorless and unexpressive, with few exceptions completely indifferent to the presence of a foreigner. The sky is pallid gray half the year. Most buildings are dingy stained concrete, with very little architectural uniqueness. The green space is principally located outside the city limits in Taiwan, in the mountainous terrain. Deforestation is banned on the steep slopes to prevent landslides, so they are remarkably pristine.
>>2842567
You can still find a lot of Third World tier restaurants in Taiwan serving rather abysmal slop. While the quality of infrastructure in Taiwan is top-notch, many neighborhoods clearly predate Taiwan's prosperity boom and haven't changed much in decades. They tend to be populated by crabby old people.

Unlike other countries, buying a SIM card in Taiwan is straightforward. Go to store, present passport, pay 1100 TWD, walk out with phone service. I have a desire to ask locals living in kino homes for a tour of their building. I don't want to make them panic from such a strange request. I considered offering someone $500 twd but it seems like a tasteless gesture.
It feels like pic related is a dream. The lighting inside this home spoke to me. I had to circle back and take a photo despite people witnessing me do so.
You can't buy taste, and you can't recreate genuine beauty because mimicry is inherently less beautiful than originality. So I needed to capture this.
Now I can visit this place in my mind, and while my body may physically be on a train, in a liminal space, or surrounded by ugliness, I will be someone else in my reality, unbeknownst to anyone else.

I wonder if I can dig up a similar photo I took in Vietnam.
The kids here are incredibly cute. I love seeing the happy families. A mom, dad, and two kids were getting family photos take at the park the other day. They seems so well put together. I felt a drop of sadness because I don't know if I'll ever experience the beauty that family embodied. I envy how healthy and proper they appeared. The mom was mature, the father was good spirited (very important for a man to not be a tyrant), the kids were happy.
What an aspiration.

I never knew what I'd do in Taiwan when I booked my flight. They didn't have a visa restriction, and I know a decent amount of mandarin, so I pulled a trigger.
My philosophy for traveling in Asia is, "show up and be entertained". Traveling in northern Vietnam was the basis of this. And so far, it continues to withstand. Trains, mountains, parks, coffee culture, cheap accommodations, and safety make it all possible.
It's quite a privilege to experience. Imagine a world without the essence of Asia, and instead there was just more of the West. More on this later...

I visited Taiwan for 10 nights this past May. I stayed at a Taipei hotel the entire time and took day trips out (nearby areas on local trains/busses and Kaohsiung and Taichung on the HSR). I'm returning in March for 7 nights and I'm deciding where to go. My departing flight is very early, so I will need to sleep close to TPE the night before.
Several people in Taipei recommended Tainan for my next visit. I was thinking 5 nights there and 2 nights somewhere close to the airport (either Taoyuan or western Taipei). Is Tainan a good idea for my next visit? Any recommendations there? I want opportunities to practice my Mandarin and I like museums (especially train related), hiking, hotpot, BBQ, and live Jazz.
The other area I was recommended is Yilan. However, I was told that I should rent a car when visiting it, which I don't want to do for this trip.

You talking about that little skate area under the bridge? I've seen some floating skateboards in the water there, the barrier needs a little work.
You can still do it though, I believe in you. The skaters there are always setting up cones for ollie height, so you can go impress the 20-year-old women. Or the men, if you're that way inclined.

I was here when you posted it, and I read through the archives before my trip. Since it's the only imprint I have of that area, your posts cross my mind and I think of your running habits. Good times there!
>You talking about that little skate area under the bridge? I've seen some floating skateboards in the water there, the barrier needs a little work.
Exactly, you know the skater spot. I like seeing the youth here doing cool stuff like that, rather than studying and being nerdy. I couldn't bring myself to be the foreigner who demonstrates to the locals how to do something. It's the travel analog of mansplaning. You probably understand this, but there might be an audience member who needs to hear this. Anyways, it would be fun to skate with them! I'd just be very mindful not to show off, or "school" anyone.
I spoke to a 19yo guy from Guangdong today at the hostel. He had the gumption to bike around most of Taiwan solo. Also got up at 6am to take photos of airplanes.
In some ways, it made me feel like I've lost my color. When I was his age I recall being more ambitious, but now my style is to avoid tourist areas, avoid go-go-go hustling, and just laying low. Gym, walks, writing, reading.
I might regret not meeting some people here, but I can live with that.
Since you're back home now, I'm relieved to know you aren't the single-dangling-earring white dude I saw this morning. It always makes me uncomfortable to see these metrosexual/bohemian/numale men. Hualien reminds me of Okinawa.
The nature, temples, heat, riced up JDM car culture, and a military air strip. The presence of BK, McDonald's and KFC also give this place an American accent like Okinawa.
I rented a bike and rode around the perimeter of the entire city in a day, plus a 4 km hike up this mountain.
A week here might be overkill, but there's an endless amount of reading and writing to do, so there's no need to regret anything.

I'll be drinking $100 coffee lattes from Louisa, reading and writing about true human behavior (not the false phenomenons published in academia), lifting weights, and trying to find cheap accomodations in Taipei. For how long I am staying, I've been marooned in 花莲 because it's only $30/night here. 台北 feels like the place I want to be. Day trips from it as a starting point is optimal. Busses here depart once every two hours, and many trails are closed due to earthquakes, I suspect.

Many couples I observe here behave similarly.
>Faux-gangster couples with similar tattoos and freakish colored eye contacts. Very kind and well-meaning.

>Bland and wholesome students sipping bubble tea and studying at cafes
>Sporty cargo pants, and hiking trail wardobe couples that also don't speak to each other but seem like wholesome power couples.
Now the crazy part - couples typically match the same phenotype. Maybe the wardrobes impact my perception, but I'm quite observant. I am not blinded with "other races appear like the same person". It's actually quite wild how many phenotypes there are there.

On to the next place, what an anticipation. It's a unique feeling knowing you'll never be back somewhere you spent a week.
I see a few similarities to Japan here, but there are significant differences you just can't ignore. In rural Japan I didn't see mini bon fires. I assume this is for some type of offering to ancestors or gods. I saw it a few times this week among different shops in the center of Hualien.
The prevalence of Christianity is also unique to Taiwan. A lady going to the Christian hospital, perhaps a nurse or administrative staff member blessed me as she got off the local bus, which is basically a converted van.
I am priced out of Taipei at my own choosing. I am only travelling solo. I shouldn't pay $100/night for a room. Maybe when I have a gf or family we can shift to being less frugal.
I haven't listened to music much on this trip. I wanted to absorb all the sound waves. But music can enhance a trip's vibes a lot. Japan was made extra special by listening to miku shoegaze. I don't know what style fits Taiwan. Maybe something equally colorful, but more authentic to reality.
ps. if you look, you can see the parking jews have swooped past this street, unrelenting.

Preface: this applies everywhere.
I wonder how many people die every year from preventable accidents because they were watching Facebook and TikTok slop.
>The off duty elderly cop sitting at 7/11 watching some bullshit pranks about climbing a ladder
>middle aged lady waiting to cross the street, unaware of the green crosswalk light because she was watching some traffic video
>a boy nearly bumping into my as he watches a video with his headphones
Maybe people here dress sharp, and behave modestly, but clearly refined looks do not translate into having a refined mind. The women on dating apps here can pretty, even appearing sophisticated, but after evaluating their profile and exchanging two messages, a less complex picture is painted.
>ohh, I love deep chats
Ok, here's the beginning of a discussion on truth preference and morality.
>do you have a favorite cafe?
No. Louisa has good cafe lattes, but I need to sample for blends at places. I understand the Tumblr aesthetics make them happy, I like them too, but there is no depth here.
>where will you travel next?
Home, traveling is not my identity and never will be.
>what's your favorite food?
I like bread, eggs and coffee. No butter. I'm not a foodie and food is not my identity.
>best date idea?
Get coffee and find a seat at the park.
Naturally I get nowhere when I refuse to drop my values which is largely rooted in stereotypical chud ideals, but without the negativity in my conversations, just earnest and honestly. The one time I acted like a crazy, horny mf actually worked, but Im not gonna associate with dumb bitches who fall for that.

This is going to blow your mind, but when you go to the barber, you, the customer, are the one who selects which haircut you want.
I know that going without your mommy for the very first time will be a big step for you, but I believe in you. Just take a picture of the big boy haircut you want and show the barber.

so many things led up to this point in time for this soup to exist, it's kinda mental.
>some sea bugs were farmed in a stinky water pond because people thought "mmm tastey"
>decades have past, with hundreds of this singular shrimp's ancestral generations being fed to humans after living in the dirty farm pond
>"mmm tastey" thoughts persist for decades too
>some chud decides that huffing seaside air tastes good
>now if only he could find an edible source of this

It takes some luck finding the right cafe when solo travelling. I like using my laptop when I'm out, and not all cafes are suitable for it. Computer-optimizing is better suited for Starbucks, McDonalds, Louisa, and other corp chains. The locals are quite content to use there phones. If you are too, there are many tiny table cafes for you.
I like reading for 1-2 hours with a font size of 24+, as I sample different blends of beans to reach that euphoria. But I'm self-aware to a fault, and don't want baristas to consider me a computer-nuisance, so I heed caution.
The weather has become cold and windy. I need a sweater and coat to walk out during the day let alone during the night.
New years eve was spent larping as a broke boy at McDonalds, waiting to catch a bus. I ordered a cone, and it was too small. So I ordered another one, and a coffee, then sat upstairs beside a sleeping man. Noticed a family notice my cone and I noticed them going to buy cones too. Enjoy! I love being the catalyst for cute stuff like that. On my way out, I slipped a $100 under the sleeping mans tray.
I was quite surprised to see how orderly the tray return area was at this location. God bless Taiwanese folks.

What would it take to become an ESL teacher in Taiwan? I have an IT degree which I hate and would imagine have zero value there so I figured teaching is kinda my only option. I like the fact that Taiwan isn't so sterile like Japan or Korea.

im arriving in Taipei in a couple weeks. First time in Asia and I'll be in Taiwan for 3 months. Have been grinding mandarin up to HSK4 last 6 months and will be staying in some old school yard in banqiao for $500 a month, at least for the first month.
I just wanna study and speak mandarin erry day, read, walk, run, eat, and make music. Considering some microcontroller installation art projects considering the component markets. Will be working on some audio programming projects.
Excited and nervous. I just read this whole thread. Some cool anons who i feel id vibe with. Bookmarked

Also i spent my childhood on 4chan and while i visited from time to time, i ain't been a reg here for like 12+ years.
Lately I've just been fixing hating the internet. I go to r reddit for lurking Taiwan/ mandarin type shit and end up just hating everyone. Social media sucks and everything feels more faker and gayer every year.
Who's have thought 4chan would feel so refreshing. Its been a long time since ive read a thread that feels natural and not full of shite. I been lurking /x/ too and thag shit has got my spirit tingling

Thank you for coming to my thread.
I've arrived in 高雄 and the style is like chinese-las vegas with a 90s matrix core twist. Viewing things from this perspective makes everything cooler.
The sewers aren't as bad here as in 台中. But I haven't done too much walking here yet.
It's quite a paradox. 10nm silicon chips, and skyscrapers, but every 10 seconds a waft of sewer gas attempts a fatal knock out blow to my lungs and stomach. I imagine a pumping station bring in water from the sea and just rinsing the fuck out of these gutters. Not sure where the water would end up, but why not the same place the gutter reaches now.

Let it be known I will NEVER return to Taiwan until these fucking sewers get flushed and desanitized somehow. Good fucking god. How has nobody mentioned this before?! The rotten smell is unavoidable ever 10 meters. And people are sitting on the curb eating in a smell worse than the most foul American bathroom I've been in. It's rank. Get your shit together and delete it somehow!!!!! I might just be some with SEA in general after this. No potable water and holding my breath every time I see a gutter is not relaxing AT ALL. The disgust is turning into anger after 4 weeks of this. I'm so glad Japan doesn't have this issue. I'll pay the 1st world tax to avoid the ROTTING 3rd world diapers.

>easy and comfy spots to get decently healthy meals?
Meals without oil, butter, and grease and also minimal sugar are healthy. Going by that, it is somewhat difficult. Even the noodle shops want to add deep fried garlic bits into the broth, making it oily. I kept getting acne from food here, even while following a vegetarian diet (vegetarianism isn't healthy because there is still sugar and oil in so much food). I have resorted to buying sugar free bread from Carrefour for most meals (careful, a lot of bread here has shit loads of sugar, it's no wonder anymore why there are so many overweight people). I have also boiled bok choy, eggs, and store-bought veggie dumplings in my hotel's kettle for meals (pic rel). Yes, I go to great lengths to avoid my cystic acne because it's ugly and painful. Who wants blood, scabs, and red swells on their face and neck?
Telling restaurants you want plain rice, and plain noodles is doable, but don't back down when they insist on adding sauce because they will assume they don't understand your require - like who prefers bland noodles to sesame oil drenched noodles?
My budget is $40-$90 per night for a business style room. It is difficult to get this in TaiBei. Everywhere else, it is easy to obtain for this price. Hostels are OK here, and can be had for $10-$20 if you don't demand your own private space.
I entertain myself with,
>walks (less now, cus I've had it with the sewers)
>cafe hopping (reading)
>restaurants + dessert
>programming
>the gym ($3 per day at most places)
>acting like a dud at mcdonalds
>chilling at the mall foot court (they feel like disney land, everyone is happy, the lighting is nice, it's clean and the people are too)
>blogging
>laundry
>train rides
>some sightseeing (I try to avoid other tourists because they gross me out)
>talk to the locals in chinese sometimes
>sleep

I was thinking about that earlier today. How did you survive that? Do you call taxis and go door-to-door? Tell me how.

I am appreciating home more this week. I've transcended focusing on,
"Things are new, and modern in Asia. The people are so modest and safe to be around. Everything is unique, and there are so many places to visit!"
Now, it's more like, the west is great because it's clean and you can live a healthy lifestyle while forging your own path. I even think forging a path in the west is easier, at least for my line of work.
Everything is what you make of it, but some *shit* is just rotten. kek
Oh and while larping as a faggot at mcdonalds, I only order coffee and ice cream, in case you were puzzled. Everything else has too much oil there.

Your entertainment description sounds like like my ideal day to day, i just also add live music or comfy cafes playing good music
Anything else you could mention to a dude like me that is on the fence of spending a month there?
I would like to find a comfy hotspring town and also a town to stay in for a bit that is mostly walkable
Ive done Japan and I like it there but am kinda burnt out on it and its cold so im thinking Taiwan or Thailand for a chill place to have somewhat healthy food and loaf the fuck around

Taitung/taidong depending what you speak. on the east coast.
small, has places to hang out. a beach. people.
or Hualien. bigger but walkable. some expats around. more things to do.
i spent a month in Tainan in the Anping district with plenty to do and places to do computer work during the day. Tainan also easy to spend a month in. or a week in each place.

>Are the hostels full of gross goobers?
The one I stayed at only had Asians in my room (I think). Sometimes they snort, like they're trying to clear their sinuses. Otherwise they're basically water/inoffensive to any senses. As hostel bunk buddies, they're the best you could hope for.
I also spent a lot of time in Japan. We seem very similar. How long did you stay in Japan? Before the end of your trip wee you ever like "ok, I'm satisfied, I can leave now"? Do you speak Japanese or Chinese?

Taiwanese are fucking loaded with money. You will never find a shop that balks at taking a 1000 bill. Sometimes their cash registers can barely even close, they are so stuffed with bills. Taiwanese simply don't see any need to show off their wealth like brown people do.
>>2848358
Taipei is so much neater than Southeast Asia. The climate is very mild compared to Europe or the USA, but I struggled to engage with my surroundings in any meaningful way while there. Taiwan is full of interesting beautiful landscapes, but somehow the dull sameness of the human society made them seem drab. I really had to push myself to get out of my room and explore. Higher prices compared to SEA also made Taiwan feel economically exclusionary to a poorfag.
>>2848537

You're one of those people who complain non-stop about the smells when you visit New York City, aren't you? Jeez, it's just microbes doing their job of breaking down the extra soup broth you left in your bowl. The restaurants dump buckets of broth and other food waste down the street drains, same as they do everywhere in Asia.
>First World tax
Isn't Japan roughly the same price as Taiwan for accomodations? Japanese food is more expensive than Taiwanese noodleslop, I guess.

I didn't notice sewer smells in Brooklyn when I visited. And being in Bangkok for 4 months, it was always just a short hello from the sewer gremlin. In these two Taiwanese city's, it spreads for 5 meters at each manhole grate. TaiPei and KeeLung weren't so bad. Tamsui was not noticeable. But wholly molly. TZ and KS...

This was roughly my thought pattern too. Here's some subconscious streaming. Taiwan is ok, on par with Japan in terms of activities and things to do. It's definitely warmer than Japan in the winter. I wish I had a motorcycle license, exploring would be a lot more fun, but the trains are cool too. Vietnam dominates Japan and Taiwan in this aspect. Just go drive around the limestone karsts on a gloomy day and observe. But VN also has a 3rd world barrier when connecting with locals.
We're only human, it limits us to our bodies and current inventions. Today I saw a fat slob parked, sitting in the driver's seat of a new bmw 730i. Even the (presumably) wealthy are subject to eating, boredom, hedonism beckoning, low intelligence behavior etc
I've been missing the cleanliness and weeb culture in Japan. It is watered down here. I sat in a few 7 elevens and family marts just to soak up the Japanese vibes. It just felt like the nicest place to be. Similar to mall food courts but more friendly.. And to soak up the fresh air. Because the sidewalks are stinky. If you read the thread, I'm sorry for repeating this. Anyway, I've spoken to more locals than in Japan. My voice is rough from lack of use and a lot of my time is spent in a daze the city has cast me into as I loaf around.
Today I observed short foreigner with an equally short Asian woman. He got on the train and tried hard not to look at me and kept his back turned to me as I looked down at the top of his head. His girl was telling him to move towards my direction with her, into the train more, and he just ignored her with a belligerent aura. It was ugly to observe because it makes you imagine him flipping out, unrestrained, behind doors. Tyranny is ugly.
I thought I'd appreciate the Chinese people's vibes more than the Japanese people's because I am more familiar with Chinese culture. Turns out I don't really care. In Taiwan, Japanese seems soft. In Japan, Chinese feels like family

Heading to Japan in april for a week then spending 2 weeks in Taiwan.
Spend probably 2 or 3 days in taipei, then head to Alishan for 2-3 days, then a couple days in Tainan.
Havent really booked anything further than that. Kinda leaving the Itinerary open for now to plan a few more places.
Is it worth going further south? I'm keeping it pretty chill, taking our time in each location, dont want to do much travel time and more kick back and relax in a location time.
Plan to end the trip with 1-3 days in taipei finishing up with some shopping and shit.

Everywhere else I've visited in Taiwan has been so much more third-world feeling. The only downside to Taipei is it's significantly colder than TaiZhong and GaoXiong.

Not him, but if you have advanced tastes and don't want to look like a simpleton, it's hard to find a competent barber. A buzz cut, or suburban boomer man? Ok, go anywhere and point to a photo. Lmao and despite all that there's still no tops
Actually seeing even straight white-Chinese couples is not super common in the mainland imo. Expats are usually somewhat older and have spouses from their home countries. Diplomats are banned from relations with the locals. Most people also don't stay for very long (like a year or two at most) so they don't get long term proper gfs.
Most of the white-Chinese couples I see there are Chinese women from the west (you can tell by how they speak English) taking their husbands to China to visit family. Not foreigners who move there and get with a local girl.
At least this is my impression of Beijing and the north. I was there for a year and really didn't see many white-Chinese couples, only the older genx type I mentioned and some younger people who were clearly tourists visiting with their Chinese gf. Maybe it's different in Shanghai.

>Did you not read through the thread? We concluded Taiwan wasn't a choice destination. Vietnam, Mainland China, Japan, and Okinawa are all nearby places that eclipse Taiwan.
In what?
Vietnam is a corrupt thirdworld shithole full of people actively trying to scam you. You can walk straight into HCMC and ask any local about that. I've cumulatively lived there for nearly 2 years now and Vietnamese women are pretty damn open about how they want to extract your bone marrow
Mainland China is fucking retarded, it's fun for a week but their widespread literal NPC shit will eventually get to you.
Japan is cool but full of the worst fucking tourists these days due to low yen. A few weeks ago absolute deadshits in Bangkok were telling me that they want to visit Tokyo because it's cheaper, at that point I realised its so fucking over for the japs.
Taiwan is a bizarre outlier and basically untouched it's amazing how it happened.
Go walk around Taipei and try find a single Indian person, it's fucking impossible.
As a tourist destination people avoid it because they think the Chinks are going to bomb it, but in 2026 I still think it's fucking peak for East Asia.

5000 is quite pricey for sea girls, Taiwanese girls or hotel outcalls sure that's reasonable.
Various Longshan or N Linsen lasses are all from south east Asia and will usually go 2-3k depending on how well presented you are
I've had a line mamasan tell me 6k once for an admittedly model tier Indo and I was telling her nah 3k max is the rate and she laughed and said yeah that's fine so do understand people might try to ask a lot more if you seem like a dumb tourist
that said Taiwan has possibly the most honest and nice working girls. I've mistaken the price before and was trying to pay 500 more, she's insisting the price is 2k and refused to take more, made me laugh, literally no woman in Thailand would do that
