Newfag here, I visited Tokyo-Osaka with my family from January 5th-13th. Fell absolutely in love (and still in post travel blues and yet to fully unpack) and I'm already planning to go again for my birthday in November, as a solo traveller, but Tokyo only. Hell maybe one day I'd move depending on how my second trip goes. Will hang around this thread and possibly help newcomers too.

Just wondering here: What are your guys' favorite Japanese food that isn't sushi, sashimi, or ramen?

I obviously know that there's a lot more to Japanese cuisine than just these things, but they are also the most common answers.
In the case of sushi & sashimi, they're often split into two camps: the "I like it" group, and the "I like everything about Japan except for this" group. I actually know a lot of people in the latter camp.
>>

Katsudon, karaage, kushiyaki, korokke

You can't do everything in two weeks, but I just hope you won't spend too much time in Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto, because they'll be crowded with tourists in hanami season. I'd like to visit Miyajima and climb Mt. Misen again.

What have you guys used for flying to Japan? Is the deal for booking a domestic flight with a Japanese airline legit?

Would it be a good idea to book a hotel with breakfast to have that covered, use konbinis for lunch, then a restaurant for dinner each day?

I definitely try to get some unagi whenever I visit Japan.

Tonkatsu is a must for me too. Personally like to go to Tonkatsu Wako chain as they also serve some great fried shrimp and creamy crab croquette.

Also can't go wrong with some yakiniku or yakitori.
>>
>>2856116
This greatly depends on your preferences and budget. Like for me personally I usually don't eat breakfast and end up eating lunch and dinner at restaurants. I also get food from the the convenience store, but usually just for snacks and rarely ever for a meal.

I loved Tokyo but on my first trip I already spent 10 days there and saw most of what there is to see. I'd feel like I would be limiting myself if I centered myself there a second time. Personally I plan on visiting Hokkaido for the second trip, since I explored most of central Japan already and Southern Japan doesn't interest me at all. Well, that's a lie. There are some cool cities south of Himeji. But North first.
>>
>>2856116
Hotels with breakfast extremely not worth it, konbini food is so fucking good. Unless you're getting a really expensive hotel with colonial breakfast or a ryokan, I do not recommend at all.

Reminder that shopping in Japan may be easier if you just use Amazon Japan. For example, go on Amazon Japan and select the Pick Up Option in your shopping cart, which is usually a local convenience store such as Family Mart. Amazon Japan will then deliver your order to your local Family Mart for you to pick up. No ID is required for Pick Up since Amazon Japan provides you with a QR Code that is linked to your order.

The money you managed to save will be more than wiped out by the round-trip fare to Hokkaido and local transportation costs there—you'll end up losing money.
>>
The fuck is their problem? I swear to god nothing in this country is open before 10am.
Like I enjoy a bit of a sleep in now and then, especially after some bars, but I just feel like I am wasting out my days waking up so late every day when I'm not travelling or something.
Sometimes I'll get up early and travel out to places further away and get there just at opening but honestly the hour train ride back is an even bigger waste.

So, the fuck you do in the evening? Certainly not hang out with any Japanese people, or any tourists that aren't freaks. One of the best things about this god-forsaken country is the fact that there is an insane amount of good places to go out at night to eat and drink.

Anything worth stopping for between Kyoto and Kanazawa?
>>
>>2856174
It was one of my biggest gripes visiting Japan. Most stores and attractions open at 11AM(!!!) and close between 6-8PM. It's absolutely ridiculous. There's no chance of enjoying nightlife, and even waking up early punishes you.
>>
>>2856212
There's a cool village and the dinosaur museum which is world renowned. If you like dinosaurs and want to see some authentic bones you should go.
>>
>>2856212
I don't think so. It doesn't take very long anyhow on the Thunderbird. Kanazawa is nice though. Check out the produce market (seafood, vegetables etc) and the "21st century museum of modern art" (picrel)
>>
>>2856218
I didn't like Kanazawa at all. The geisha district is horribly expensive and serves only green tea, the Omicho market I'm allergic to seafood and it's literally nothing but that, the castle is currently being renovated so it was a nothingburger and the "top 5 best garden of Japan" was so incredibly packed with people that it was no fun at all. The only redeeming quality of Kanazawa was finding a second hand shop that sold some really niche stuff I was looking for. Would skip the city 9/10 times
>>
Why is every westerner I'm meeting in Tokyo such a big asshole? Met a weeb near akihabara saying he doesn't speak English when he does. Most auzzie tourists are fake friendly as fuck. Meanwhile people I met in LA, Las Vegas, and Bangkok Thailand were extremely friendly.
Japan is kind of a shit place for solo travel, people are very unfriendly here. Even the asshole japs are nicer.
Are all the tourists and visa workers just jaded? Wtf
>>
>>2856225
Also the Japanese are much more colder than the Thai people.
I kind of get why people are depressed here when everyone is extremely distant and unfriendly.
I unironically get better interactions cold approaching Japanese women.

>>
>>2856116
it depends on your routine, I personally like to get up early and eat my breakfast at 7 am, hotels usually serve breakfasts early so that works for me pretty well. And don't listen to naysayers, if you stay at a good hotel breakfasts are at least gonna be decent.

Speaking of sumo, i know the whole "go watch sumos train in the morning" thing, but is there anywhere foreigners can actually TRY sumo? Imagine a gaijin sumo league where random big lads on holiday could put on the loincloths and wrestle, or watch others wrestle. Could be a fun spectacle even for the japanese watching fat gaijin in the ring

Is it just me or does anyone else feel unimpressed these days with public transit in Tokyo centre?
My recent trip, I started getting the feeling because I had no solid plans and was just doing whatever, and it was a growing theme that I was kind of like 40 minutes to an hour away from like everything. I guess that's what I get for staying in Ikebukuro.

I am planning a trip to Japan during the summer (because of the wage cage I can't get a longer vacation outside of the summer) for two to three weeks. Planning on being in Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto and a day trip to Hiroshima. Are there any good hotel chains that won't completely break my bank?

Also, how is climbing Mt Fuji? Is it worth attempting?
>>
>>2856180
Back in may 2024 i was in japan for the first time and turned on the TV to see sumo. A regular occurence i thought.

>>
>>2856223
The "geisha districts" are located at places literally called East Tea House and West Tea House, so it would make sense that green tea would be the main product they'd be selling in those areas. I can't comment regarding prices and such, but I didn't see anything outrages when I strolled through both areas...unless you're talking about the gold leaf products, then yes some of those things were crazy expensive.

A lot of markets in Japan primarily serve/sell fish products and Omicho market is no exception, but they definitely had other things. I had some grapes (100 yen per, very tasty but don't think it was worth it) and croquettes that did have fish in it but there were other non-fish options. I recall some places sell meat and some unique alcohol as well, but I don't recall seeing much in terms of traditional Japanese treats.

From my understanding the area was known as a "castle ruins" type of location until fairly recently and the restoration of the main castle just started last year, so it is what it is. There are other structures up such gates and watch towers around the area you can view and enter, and I feel is still worth a visit for the views and to get a scope of how big the structures and area is.

And the visit to the garden was just fine when I went. Yes there were a lot of people there, but I never thought it was crowded.

At any rate, sad to hear you didn't enjoy the place but I had a great time when I went last year. I'm not sure if it's a place I'd ever feel the need to revisit, but I'd definitely recommend it to people who want an experience that's a little more on the quiet side and focus more on enjoying the scenery.
>>
>>2856289
There's actually several tournaments throughout the year, even one happening right now. But sadly nothing in April as far as I'm aware

Welp, I'll either have to pick between going to Japan in mid July or wait a whole year to hunt for better prices that align with my vacation schedule. I'll most likely bite the bullet once I get home.

I'll prob stay 5 days in Tokyo to geek out and look at the big city shit and I'll have to look up something fun to do in the north for the next 2-3 days. I'm interested in the more traditional cultural stuff. Engaging in the matsuri sounds fun and Hokkaido looks promising.

For reference I was originally planning to stay over one of the shrines at Koyasan for the night to experience the shukubo and explore the area, but the prices were too steep for me, at least last time I checked for April.

Not completely related, but I've started working with a 90% japanese team, and even though I've pretty much got no problem talking and working with my male coworkers, the female ones are absolutely awful. Petty bitter cunts who also barely talk to each other, except to shit on other coworkers or clients. There's more than 20 of them, and until now only 3 of them seem like decent people.
Most of them are in their 20/25s, so yes, there is a problem with the attitude of young japanese women.
And note to me, never ever make jokes in a japanese workplace. Humour doesn't exist there.

sounds like modern app based dating in a big city. i think before 2020 apps were less common but now its a must and young japanese people act like cheating is super normal. are you datying women around your age?

>>2856225
the people who go to Japan are: snooty influencer types that are annoyed other tourists exist, loud men who came to drink fuck prostitutes and feel high value, weird autistic weeb types who wouldnt be interesting to hang with anyway, and couples doing their own thing. i would recommend finding a group on facebook of solo travellers who are interested in meet and greet and going from there.

If a bald 32 whiteguy like me can pickup women I'm convinced the hookup culture is intense here. Three weeks ago after Comiket in Ueno I had a ONS with QT I met at a Irish Bar I like to go to, even cold approach Nampa (just getting lines) is easy and I have met and had some success.
Its not passport bro SEA level easy but unless you're fat and can speak somewhat passable Japanese you shouldn't have an issue. They are all pretty trashy (well in a different way). There's so much prostitution here, that's is almost *expected*. The few dates I have been on here, girls have told me their friends (and pretty sure them too) routinely do compensated dating often for dumb material shit like handbags/designer labels or idol/anime shit.

I can't really blame them either because the economy here is basically double fucked and double again for young women. Trying to do any kind of banking/loans here is cancerous even if you aren't a gaijin. Meaning there's basically no new jobs/growth unless you enjoy min wage shit.
It's one of the glaring flaws with Japan that I see but live with.

That does literally nothing to stop them and is actually quite retarded on the Japs part. Same shit like no tattoos, etc. Its all a compromise from enacting outright RICO like laws that would actually criminalize being a member of an organized crime group.
They will never do that because 1. there's a belief that having a vacuum will invite far worse criminal elements and 2. Post WW2 anxiety/distaste on any laws that criminalize organizations/groups since well.. lets just say pre-1945 such laws did exist and were abused.

Wagyu is just Japanese cattle, so why are you making it sound like it is impossible to acquire? After all, even the local grocery store in Japan will sell wagyu. Are you really asking if it is possible to eat wagyu besides Kobe beef, because the answer is obviously yes.

For example, Hida beef is a premium brand of Japanese wagyu from Gifu Prefecture and produced by Japanese black cattle. The cheapest place in Japan to eat Hida beef is at Ajikura Tengoku ( 味蔵天国 ) in Takayama, Gifu. This is because Ajikura Tengoku is a restaurant directly managed by the regional agricultural cooperative, JA Hida Group.

Doing a 15 day trip in mid October with the wife. Spending 2 nights at each location.

Tokyo(Asakusa)>Kanazawa>Shirakawago Village(day trip)>Takayama>Kyoto>Nara(day trip)>Osaka>Hakone>Tokyo(Shinjuku)

This seems to be a pretty standard route for seeing a blend of everything (temples, parks, castles, food, drinking, shopping, relaxing). With so much movement I made sure to prioritize hotels near the train stations. Any recommendations, changes or removals? I’ve heard Nara is overhyped, so considering just removing that as a day trip, but the deer seems like something the wife would enjoy.

The Japanese themselves have a better understanding of the bombs than Western weebs and lefties who pretend the bombings were unjustified.

The two cities' museums show off the dual understandings of terrible tragedy and tragic consequence of war. Hiroshima is more graphic and disturbing while Nagasaki focuses more on description and history. The bombs were both a natural consequence of war and a terrible thing to happen, and so most people in Japan connected to the bombs understand that the war Japan started cause the horror it endured and why that means war is a terrible thing. Most people, even the survivor testimonials on the recordings I saw, don't dwell on hating America for doing it but understanding that the bombs were the natural culmination of war, with the ultimate message that this means war should be avoided.

The Vietnamese currently have the worst reputation in Japan because of all the murder and robbery they commit, especially knife murders. They even managed to beat the Chinese in hate from Japanese people, because Chinese in Japan mainly stick to white collar crime, instead of murder. If you go search on X, the Kurds and Vietnamese are the top 2 most hated immigrants in Japan right now. What separates the Kurds from the Chinese are murder / manslaughter through traffic accidents because Kurds love driving around Japan with either no drivers licenses or no car insurance, so be careful when you visit Saitama Prefecture because Saitama is Kurd territory and the Kurds won't get kicked out of Saitama until the left wing Saitama governor is replaced with an anti-immigrant governor. If you don't believe me, just search Kurds or Vietnamese (Nguyen) in the Japanese language, on X.

>>
>>2857107
Looks like the New Zealand government requires an import permit for airguns that look too realistic, which basically applies to almost every airsoft brand. Due to this fact, I would not take risk trying to bring this Ghost in the Shell airgun to New Zealand.

An import permit is not required to bring these airguns into New Zealand.

A permit to import is only required for:

a specially dangerous airgun (as they are treated as firearms)

for fully automatic airguns that fall under clause 4A of the Schedule in the Arms (Restricted Weapons and Specially Dangerous Airguns) Order 1984 (as they are restricted weapons).

restricted airguns. Sections16,18(4)(e) and (5)Arms Act 1983 refer:

restricted airgun means an airgun that, —

(a) without any of the attachments with which it is customarily used, has the appearance of being a pistol, prohibited firearm, or restricted weapon; or

(b) with some or all of the attachments with which it is customarily used, has the appearance of being a pistol, prohibited firearm, or restricted weapon; or

(c) is designed for use in airsoft or paintball sports and,—

(i) without any of the attachments with which it is customarily used, has the appearance of being a firearm capable of full automatic fire; or

(ii) with some or all of the attachments with which it is customarily used, has the appearance of being a firearm capable of full automatic fire.

A lot of airsoft guns, paintball guns and BB guns have the appearance of a pistol, restricted weapon or prohibited firearm and are therefore restricted airguns for the purpose of importation.

You'll be fine. I did the exact same thing (and even for the exact same time) and I had the time of my life. So much so that I'm going back in a few days. I take it this is your first time solo travelling if you're asking that question, but based off my experience at least, some of my greatest memories have come unplanned, borne out of the spontaneous decisions that can only happen when you experience the freedom of not being bound by a schedule gives you. So enjoy it, anon.
Protip: try to make a reservation at least a couple nights in advance before you check out where you are. Spend a little time looking at places you might wanna go and try to book directly thru the hostel/hotel for better rates most of the time. This will avoid you the stress of having to look for a place last minute and figuring out how to get there, but this applies to any place on Earth anyway.

Seeing people sitting alone in park benches, restaurants, browsing book stores. I don't want to be like a Japanese person, I want to relish in our differences. I think of what I would say to them, how despite being from different worlds we could make a connection and learn from each other, how I could maybe help them with something or they could help me. But I can't do any of that. All I do is see attractions, buy things at stores, eat food at restaurants. Like I'm living in a bubble allowed to move throughout the country but never actually make contact with anything. Or perhaps that's just how city life is, seeing millions of people every day and yet having no connection or sharing anything with any of them.

I've been in Tokyo for a week now, I've stayed in Ota for a bit and Funabashi for a bit. They feel so different, I've never been to a place this huge, let alone anywhere back home where the transit has feral black people.

Those flight prices are pretty insane. Doesn't South America operate hub airports? Would've thougth Ecuador would be well placed to build a mega airport which handles all Asian flights coming into the continent. Even found an island to house it on.

>Nara is overhyped
Just go there before the bus full of chinese comes.
Also, don't feed the deers at the entry of the park. If you go deeper in the park (and i suggest to do it) you'll find more calm deers that won't attack you while you feed them.
Also, you can visit Nara in the morning (half day is enough imo) and then in the afternoon you can trake a train from Nara station and visit Uji. In Uji you can visit the byōdo-in temple and buy some tea. Also, you can stroll across the Uji river. But i was there last summer and the sunlight was till 7pm.
IMPORTANT NOTE: the Gojūnotō is in renovation but imo, the giant buddha and park itself are worthy of a trip to Nara.

Hattori Han, a historical reenacting group based in the Southeastern region of the United States that focuses on Imperial Japan, are friends with Banzai Online, a monthly newsletter / magazine for anyone interested in Japanese militaria, and therefore, it can be assumed that Hattori Han gets all their Imperial Japan clothing and equipment from collectors and reproductionists in the USA. What this means for you is that it is not entirely necessary for you to travel to Japan in order to purchase Japanese militaria when you can already buy and sell both authentic and reproductions of Japanese militaria in America.

I'm a glowie/ex military and I actually have gone to milsurp in town because the Japanese have some really good ones and carry quality legit gear like plate carriers, holsters, the PRC radio cables and terminations for antennas, Phones, Crypto loaders/SKLs. (Both indigenous made and imported). Right now with the exchange rate its far cheaper to buy shit at stores like this than at the PX/NEX exchange or the CIF if you actually need productive/useful tactical gear.

They only thing they can't sell is ITAR shit which imo is bullshit because they are perhaps our closest ally in the world. The have the chink NOD PVS-18 knockoffs which work just as good imo (donno about the battery life thou).

this is absolutely fascinating, the fact that there is a market for blue line patches in the japanese airsoft blows my fucking mind.

I'm really looking more for fudd/collector memorabilia type stuff, It just sucks how hard it is to find any japanese stuff in the US market, it's really just the occasional arisaka or slightly rarer namba which frankly I find neither that interesting or desirable. On the other hand, snapped up tons of US or nazi german ww2 memorabilia at conveniently nearby gun-shows, re-enactments very easily (could easily have had much much more, and absolutely not have broken the bank) I'm not really as "into" the more modern accessories anymore (more like; I bought a ton of shit like that a decade/+ ago when I was in my shtf operator larp fantasy phase, and still have all of it) and was more looking for distinctly 'modern' japanesey (jsdf type stuff? maybe with the jp /pol/ meme equivalent patches) modern OR retro (imperial japanese flag and ultranationalist). Surprised by the amount of seeing gadsen and molon labe stuff being marketed to japanse airsofters.

Most of the things I looked at on that site I felt like I already had, or seemed overpriced (compared to lgs/shows) per a quick yen/usd google convert (assorted mag pouches, eotech sights) That said, cheap PVS knockoffs, I'm fucking in. That's cool as hell and a sweet souvenir (yeah I know I can *probably* get them online from temu or something, likewise I can get a fake rolex online probably, but the ones I got for like ten bucks after haggling with some guy in some guy in SEA or the balkans is so much more of a memorable bookshelf display piece).

That said, thanks for the recommendation, I do recall checking out some airsoft store in akihabara last time I went (pre 'rona), if I see more, I will again. Maybe even look some up in the areas I'll be in.

Lol well I've been there and know exactly the kind of questions and doubts you might be having. Thankfully Japan is a very forgiving place in the sense that you won't be hopeless in case you fuck up by having immediate communication, transportation, food, emergency, and even lodging services/options at your disposal if it came to that, but as in any other place in the world, you have to prepare and actively seek out whatever interests you, especially when you don't have every minute detail planned out for you beforehand. What you make of your time in the country is entirely up to you, so as long as you act logically and confidently you will be okay.
Another protip: Japan has many holidays, and prices in lodging spike up considerably then (if you can get a room at all). So do your research and prepare accordingly.

I get it, but once you're there you have to think about where to eat, where to go, where to relax, where to do shopping and so on that you'll be quite busy.
>Obviously I'm not expecting to meet or talk to people I'd want to but that's unrealistic
Yes, however, i had some """conversations""" with locals (a couple from fukoka, grannies from osaka, a guy who works from JR). They were supernice. Yes it's hard but not totally impossible. We used G translate to talk.
>I am afraid I'd offend
During an hypotetic conversation? Honestly, i think it's hard. If you are afraid to offend with your behaviour just be quiet when you take subways/trains/bus, learn basic etiquette about chopsticks and respect the lines.

Oishii = it's delicious
Oishikatta = it was delicious

For example if you want say "the ramen was delicious" you can say "ramen wa oishikatta desu". Or if you want say "this ramen is delicious" you can say "kono ramen wa oishii desu".

Yeah, a hotel near Chiba works well. I was there last year for Tokyo Game Show and managed to get a nice place near Chiba station. Prices were a lot better at that time (also had a great public bath area to relax in), didn't have to wake up super early because I was close to the place, and getting to Makuhari was easy by taking the monorail and Keiyo line.

The Keiyo line is directly connected to Tokyo station, so you could also get a hotel near that area as well, but that train ride alone will take about 40 mins.
>>
>>2857636
If you insist on staying near Makuhari Messe this March, keep an eye out as some people will likely drop their hotel reservations after failing to get anything in General Sales on February 1st.

In the future, just make bookings for all March weekends in the Autumn (Oct/Nov). Ensure these bookings have free cancellations and drop the ones you don't need when the actual fes dates are announced. The only wrinkle this year was addition of Friday, but I didn't have any trouble adding Thursday night to my booking.

first time visiting japan on the 27th

unironic question: am i allowed to use websites like 4chan and also pirated manga websites on wifi/mobile e-sim data while in japan? do they care? will i be charged with something? I know that they are strict on pirated stuff but do they care if a tourist like me does it?

also, i have a little over 1500eur of spending money after taking care of hotel and flight booking, esim etc. and im gonna stay in Osaka for 8 and a half days, generally how much should i expect to spend on food and transportation for my duration of stay? because i wanna buy a bunch of stuff as well with that money. also 2 days of tokyo or would 1 day be enough to see everything there?

one last thing, how crowded is it in osaka and tokyo this time of year?
>>
I'm thinking of grabbing a flight from Haneda, Tokyo to Chitose, Hokkaido for Feb 3. I looks like slim pickings for hotels and hostels. How bad are internet cafes?
- What's the difference between a booth and a room? A booth would still have a slide door, right?
- Are the flat rooms / booths actually long enough for a tall person to sleep lying down?
- Are there pillows and blankets?
Flat rooms are all booked so it's either flat booth or recliner rooms.

Has anyone used the chitose airport onsen? There's probably no way in hell I'll be able to get in but I'm still curious. it looks like reception closes at 19:30. So any flights landing later is SoL for staying there overnight? And if you can't get in, you'll be kicked out of the airport and have to taxi to town if you miss the last train?

Has anyone else felt kinda burnt out or not really interested in Japan after traveling there for a third time? Maybe it's just because I was there in the winter?
>>
>>2857733
I got back from 2 weeks there earlier in the month and I thought it was great, but that was my 1st trip.

I did a winter-dodging trip (AKA going somewhere out of season for more moderate weather) to Kyushu this time, so I'm thinking of doing a summer-dodging trip to Tohoku & Hokkaido next June because I've read they're the most mild summers in the country and June is the other cheap time to go there.

My Japan trip is in 5 weeks.
I am spending 6 days in Tokyo, then I don't know what to do with 6 other days. Any tips?
I am thinking of staying the other 6 days in Kyoto and doing day trips from there, Osaka and other places.
My flight back is from Osaka.

What would you do in my position?
>>
>>2857739
Depends on what are your interest imo.
I'd plan in this way
>3 days kyoto (if you get bored of temples as happened to me lol, you can do the kurama-kibune trekking, half day is enough)
>2 days osaka
>1 day as jolly
For example. You want try an onsen? 1 day in hakone if you can find a ryokan to spend the night. The next day you could take the shinkansen from Odawara to go to kyoto.
You could visit nara and uji.
You could use that extra day for the universal studios in osaka and so on...

Nice. Yeah my first and second trip were more enjoyable.
Im just retarded and trying to figure out if its Japan itself I am burnt out on , or just travel in general. I think its more so, traveling in general, being in too many public spaces too much and burning myself out. I just figure I would come ask you guys what you think, mostly so I can decide if I will go back to Japan this spring, or go to Europe or kms

My 4th time I felt burn out from exploring and visiting new places. I had planned to visit Azabu and team lab planets but I decided to stay in Akiba all day instead.
There are many other touristic places like Mt.Fuji or that whale meat restaurant I REALLY want to go but following a schedule tires me and I rather pretend I am Japanese old man and eat in a park next to a river watching the sunset and then go pretend I am interested in the solicitor concafes just because they called me oniichan.
Currently planning a 5th trip, yeah, Tokyo again. Maybe this time I will finally climb Mt. Fuji.

How's the tout situation in kabuchiko, specifically on godzilla road? I plan on taking my family to japan for their first time but its been a few years since my last solo trip there. Has it got worse? I've heard they're starting to get more aggressive around tourists these days. Not going to anywhere shady or outside of the godzilla road for that matter to avoid the more nightlife red light district parts of kabuchiko with my family to avoid the touts but want to know if the cancer is more terminal on godzilla road now.

In terms of Europe I've only been to Ireland (North and Republic) and it was nice, but that was long enough ago that I'm not reliable for travel advice. If I had to go to Europe I'd go to Switzerland, Norway, Croatia, or Ireland again because they seem to be the places with vibes closest to what I got in Hentaistan. Mountain and/or rural valley scenery with nice small scale accommodations and a few modern hotels peppered in.

What I will say is I shotgun-loaded a lot of Japan into two weeks and the vibes were very different in Tokyo compared to Hiroshima and Kitakyushu (the region not the city, which I didn't go to)

From what I've seen Japan is a country you could easily cycle between 4-6 regions for full vacations that are worth the time, then by the time you finish the cycle the first region is fresh again

>Tokyo-Yokohama-Chiba
>Tohoku-Hokkaido
>Kansai
>Chugoku-Shikoku
>Kyushu
>Okinawa
>Misc. other regions of interest bolted onto one of the other regions' trips

If you've been there multiple times but mostly stayed in the Tokyo and Kansai area I'd definitely recommend Kitakyushu for a change of pace.
>>
>>2857786
NTA but what is there to do in Kitakyushu?
I'm using the free domestic into Fukuoka while I wait for the rest of my group to arrive in Japan.
>>
>>2857787
So Nagasaki and Beppu-Oita obviously have unique things going on that everyone knows about, but I was also in Fukuoka for a while and honestly it's just the scale of the cities. Few hundred thousand rather than several million but with all the scenic temples, museums, and English-accessible restaurants you'd want.

Fukuoka and Beppu-Oita have decent nightlife scenes if you're into that but honestly almost my whole vacation was sightseeing and restaurants because I was just looking for a chilled out time. Nagasaki is even more chilled out though. I don't know if they'd have anything more energetic tourists would be after.

Dunno if this helps offer insight but last time I travelled alone I got flagged and they went through all my shit. This was in Canada, they were definitely checking me for doujins because the border officer went through my entire Non Non Biyori manga collection. They were surprisingly laid back though, while I had no contraband my luggage was filled to the brim with cute anime girl shit.
>>
>>2857786

Yeah maybe I will have to check or Kyushu or Hakkaido the next time I go to Japan. But like I was saying, I think its just all the public spaces I am burnt out on. Going out to eat and trains annoyed me. I mostly enjoyed alone time in my room...even back home I am just not wanting to go out so . Maybe its winter causing me to hermit?
I suppose a better question would be to ask you guys if you also feel like being a hermit in the Winter

>>
>>2857806
If you want hermit Japan, go to Beppu and stay at a Ryokan. You can go out and about in the town if you want but other than the waterfront there's not much busy activity to bother with.

You might also like doing a day trip to the 7 Hells but I personally didn't really like it. I'm very sensitive to the sulfur smell though so that was definitely a contributing factor. Also if you do go to Beppu and do the 7 Hells, don't bother sticking around for the geyser it's really not impressive.
>>
>>2857773
The touts won't bother you. If they offer to go to a bar just say "no thanks" and they will move to the next person
>>
>>2857808
Anything that depicts underage characters or "obscenity" such as cohersion, rape, etc yes. I won't even attempt to import doujins because of how poorly written the laws are. All it takes is some asshole having a bad day to start questioning you why the girls in your doujin have school outfits. Better to just stick with SFW.
>>
>>2857804
Yep, IDK if customs are aware of mandarake since that's where I bought mine, but I do feel like they will most definitely check mine if I solo travel. >>2857808
NTA but I'm the anon who asked about the customs, I live in SEA (har har) and they ban any type of porn. Previously I had to use a proxy service to order doujins and even then they warn me there's a chance of customs checking. My materials are MILFs but still.

Is it normal to feel burned out from prepping before my first trip?
It's been my dream travel since I was 13, but now I'm feeling all weird worrying about how I might overspend or not enjoy this or that location after watching them on youtube and not feeling that impressed.

I'm even thinking about travelling to other places like Paris or more states from my home country.
But I really need to buckle up though and start making my reservations because the clock's ticking.
>>
>>2857822
I went in early Jan. and bought tickets in mid Dec. without much hassle but I did end up having connecting flights. Most places you'd likely be going will also have cheap vacancies any time other than peak tourist season.

As for preemptively burning out thanks to Youtube vids, if you're going anywhere scenic you won't have that problem. And what's more I'd say the videos I watched of non-scenic things like the shopping districts of Tokyo prepared me to not have any issues on the metro.

I remember randomly bumbling into a huge (open to the public) Buddhist temple complex in Nagasaki that had imported Qing and even Ming Dynasty silks on display and just sitting there enjoying the atmosphere. I'd seen plenty of footage of Senso-Ji in Tokyo so I'd seen a technically more impressive temple on video but physically being in one was much better.

Some actual advice is that, yeah once you are in Japan, those plans of "seeing this" or "doing that" , might seem dumb and boring. You could just reserve your hotels and plan as you go for your activity and food

>Any rough idea of what the Ryokans around there will run me?

I think that's my overall plan for the different Tokyo districts. I do have some stuff I really want to do, mainly:
>TeamLab Planets
>Ghibli museum
>Tokyo National Art Museum
>watch a sumo show
>day trip to Universal Studios

But I also look forward to wander around, as that is something I love to do here in my country.
I have a 10 day trip, and I know this may seem controversial, but I mostly really only care about Tokyo. However I do plan to stay 2 days in Osaka, both to visit Universal and to actually explore the place.
I'm mostly hesitant about Kyoto, as I don't want to "miss out" but I can't shake the feeling it's a tourist trap.

I prepped extremely extensively but I didn't watch them on Youtube because that ruins it. I just used the Travel Japan site then searched by city and then made a list of the things that seemed cool to visit in those cities.

About overspending, trust me I'm the biggest stingy motherfucker in the world, my family calls me the adopted jew, but when it came to going to Japan I decided to say fuck it and just spend on what I want (within reason). Just don't go around buying 300$ anime figs and you'll be fine. The food is incredibly cheap and the transport worst case scenario just walk more.

I was frequently underspending my daily budget until I had days where I got drunk and went to amiami/mandarake then ended up needing to take out more cash.
I did conveyor belt sushi one night, ordered a few drinks and ate sushi until I was full and the bill was only 4000 yen.
>>
>>2857896
I can almost see the figure of a little scrawny söyboy waiting in the toilet of some random conbini, guarding a wallet with 50 dollars in it (lmao) for a full 30 minutes.
"O-Ok, 30 minutes! More Beppu questions.
Whats the overall vibe like? Nature walks are nearby correct? Its kinda a slow town vibe right? Decent food around?
That ryokan sounds nice. Any cheaper options for staying a week or 2? And reccomendations for some good public and also private onsens?
>>
>>2856885
>there's a belief that having a vacuum will invite far worse criminal elements
That sounds pretty sensible to me but I don't know. Is organised crime in the US better with RICO laws? Are the cartels better than the mafia at its peak? Idk. But having the dominant organised crime be homegrown and relatively peaceful sounds like the best you can hope for.
>>
>>2857981
>Nature walks are nearby correct? Its kinda a slow town vibe right? Decent food around?
Yes on all fronts. If you took the bus on the 7 Hells tour (I swear I'm not shilling it, honestly all the Hells except the first one are underwhelming) the last two are in a really out of the way area that would be perfect for just meandering around enjoying nature.

>Any cheaper options for staying a week or 2? And reccomendations for some good public and also private onsens?
I only stayed in the ryokan because I had a private onsen room, but only a few minutes' walk beyond the Beppu Brewery restaurant I recommended there's a public onsen so you could get a nice chicken burger and fried avocado on the side then go for a soak.

It's not hard to find cheaper hostels and hotels closer to the main rail station closer to the coast, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice not doing at least a couple days in a ryokan if you go to Beppu. Maybe stay at one of the cheaper but still decent hostels then check out ~3 days early and move to a ryokan closer to the bus terminal station.

It's not uncommon to spend an entire day at a city-center super sento or hot spring resort spa, bathing multiple times, eating and drinking, getting massages, lounging on reclining chairs or tatami mats, and reading books or manga. It's something Japanese people do with the same relaxed feeling Westerners have when lounging on the beach.

Nah I just did the North. Kyushu practically requires you drive if you want to see anything in the central-southeast 3/5 of the island and I didn't get any certification to do so before leaving. I also spent a decent amount of time in Hiroshima and Tokyo so that limited the amount of time I had available in Kyushu.

Honestly aside from a day of weeb shopping for EVA and SMT merch I could have skipped Tokyo and went all in on Kyushu. It was much nicer than Tokyo, and Hiroshima was just okay too.

Day 1 of just winging it with no plans whatsoever in Japan

Also do you guys do meetups here? I could really use talking to someone in person who’s more experienced than me. If you are near Nipponbashi let me know. Otherwise i could use some tips right now from kind anons

Ironically the only people that just wanted to have a conversation with me were some dudes from Guam and a Chinese barber that complimented me on my hair.

The only no rapey (direct) flights I can find are 1250€ ones for ~March 15-16-17 to April 7.
Could be worse all things considered, but a tad too soon, and I wanted like +7days starting and ending point to go further into April and explore north instead, I already traveled to Japan 3 times and have seen enough of the areas south of Tokyo down to Yakushima. But so be it then. Couldn't plan this shit in advance anyway.
How would you plan this trip alongside Sakurameme BUT without making it too much of a retreading of past travels? Starting south and gradually going north would be a no-brainer, but I already did the usual (Hiroshima/Onomichi/Himeji/Kyoto/Osaka/Nara/Fuji/Tokyo) and their surrounding areas, and most of the time more than once. Also went to Kanazawa once, it was nice, maybe I should look further into the Sea of Japan coast. Also the Alps but I'll leave too soon.
Or maybe the Sakurameme makes it worth it going to the same places once again?
>>
>>2858034
>did not prepare

Hm, yes, so this is your average /trv/ traveller. I genuinely don't know where this autismo of not planning your trips comes from. You're going to "just wander" around Osaka or Tokyo? Oh really now? Those gigantic metropolitan cities? Biggest cities of Japan? Ok then. Sounds VERY sane.

God I miss pre-olympics with less police presence. It used to be like the only place in Japan not being totally ordinary, regulated, safe. The one place where you could do some fun shady things without losing your face. Now it's just a generic tourist area like Shibuya, Harajuku, etc.

Yeah I was just telling the other anon that it's not really where you'd want to go with your whole family. The maids and the actual streetwalkers aren't a problem if you're a normal adult.

I haven't bothered to visit that particular spot for several years now, but yeah I could've sworn that street was fine. Most pics/videos I've seen is the spot just little past that, the road with the "town square" right next to it

>>2858131
I don't know if I'd consider it the best I've ever had but I do agree that it was amazing, especially when you consider the price. Not sure if I'd ever go back to Takayama, but I'd definitely eat it again if I ever do.

If you declare something normal on your incoming card then customs tends to trust you more, especially when it seems like you're being overly cautious on declarations.
Like the other guy said maybe it's just an AUS/NZ thing where they're more willing to hand wave for like, 'oh it's wooden chopsticks' but even the time I had a piece of decorated driftwood I bought at a market the guy just asked "Did you buy the wood in a store?" "Yes" "Alright go ahead" didn't even ask me to pull it out and show him.
Obviously, don't declare the porn unless you want them to look.

It really is a strange form of torment for the soul. Whether you can speak to them or even if you are Japanese, no man was ever meant to see so many beautiful women constantly all over the place knowing you will not actually meet them or get to know them. The typical man throughout history would live in a place where he knows a handful of girls he finds pretty and maybe talks to occasionally. Meanwhile in Tokyo or Osaka you walk down a random street and you will walk past fifty girls who are your age, thin, have a cute face, good fashion sense, clean skin, pretty makeup.
You just have to remember: even if you could speak their language perfectly, even if they were interested in speaking to you, there's just no way you were ever meant to be with them. You are just a stranger passing through and 90% of women rightfully have no interest in people who won't even be in the same continent next week. They are just going about their own lives with their own problems, their own things they want to see or want to buy. There obviously are girls who are interested in spending time with a foreigner, but this number is very small and even fewer of those relationships ever actually form beyond eating dinner or going to an arcade together.

It really depends, prices are all over the place. If you go to Radio Kaikan they have a store near the top floor with tons of figgies in glass cases. They have a huge collection but its marked up like 300% or more than mandarake. I wouldn't say to scour everywhere to save a few hundred yen but definitely visit a few shops to get a feel for how much the ones you want go for.

planning on going to japan early march and staying for a month. going to spend a week in tokyo, then rent a car and meander south. i want to take in the rural, less traveled parts of the country.

anyone have any tips for driving there? i've done stuff like this in the balkans before, where i just got a car for 6 weeks and went all over. i didnt really have a problem with getting food and speaking english (or communicating with wild hand gestures) in even the most remote, out of the way areas in balkan countries. will it be similar there, where the majority of people speak at least a little english?
>>
>>2858327
Not in my experience. It's seedy but there are actual slums with actual crime problems in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka that are rougher. And I'm the guy who said I couldn't go 5 minutes without a tout harassing me. My hotel's washing charge was ridiculous so I spent like 3 hours at a coin laundry a few streets over in the middle of the night and not once did it even seem a little bit dangerous. I could see like 4 love hotels from the coin op.
>>
>>2858345
Outside tourist businesses near major settlements you shouldn't expect any English fluency. Even in places like Hiroshima on main drags where you'd expect tourists had instances where nobody in a restaurant or store spoke English. Japan is ranked very low on G20 English competency for a reason.

The main things to note are to remember it's the British side of the road not the normal one, that you pull all the way into the intersection and sit right in front of the crosswalk when turning, and that there are lots of small single-lane side streets where a car might be coming from the other direction or pedestrians might be in the middle of the road.

The only reason Japan doesn't have massive road fatalities is that it's mostly Japanese people driving there. If those rules were applied in the USA there'd be hundreds of thousands of more road deaths a year.
>>
>>2858349
thanks for the reply. I will make sure my japanese is serviceable when i go.

the one way roads sound similar to what i experienced in places like kosovo, montenegro, and north macedonia. Those mountain roads weren't exactly fun to drive on but i'm glad i'll have an idea of what to expect.

Since 2001, this Japanese man has been drinking energy drinks and providing the most detailed reviews of global energy drinks based on first hand research, with over 1650 flavors reviewed.

>Before launching "Energy Drink Mania," there were no detailed websites about energy drinks. While there were many online articles that either sensationalized the dangers of energy drinks or treated them as a joke for entertainment purposes...

>So, in June 2013, he established an energy drink information website, and in 2014 began engaging with SNS. Instead of treating energy drinks as weird or something to mock, he succeeded in increasing the number of people who genuinely enjoy energy drinks as a hobby. Currently, Japan has the largest population of energy drink enthusiasts in the world, and the number has even increased to the point where it might be considered too many.

>The content on the site includes information about energy drink scenes both in Japan and abroad, flavor reviews, brand explanations, and more. He takes pride in the fact that many people use it as a bible for energy drinks. It could even be said that the world of energy drink enthusiasts wouldn't have come to fruition if Energy Drink Mania hadn't been created.

I am back from the pachinko parlour again bros, this time I actually won. nah i was just exaggerating, i researched everything before hand, when you start gaining balls you have to press a button at the top and pull a lever at the bottom left somewhere to drain the excess balls so they don't spill out. I was just imaginging what would happen if I didn't know that in advance. I was just lucky enough to find a machine that someone had a few spins at already and were getting a few atari's early in the morning and it seemed like it was paying out so i gave it a go. In the end i just won about 1000 yen, probably could have gotten more but i was there for hours and was tired of sitting. Theres also the gamble that I might have lost all my earnings if I kept playing. Still had to do the money exchange with the man at the hidden booth at the back of the parlour and it was sketchy as fuck.

I don't know in which EU country you are, but as a frog, I used my Boursorama and Fortuneo cards without any problem, they were accepted everywhere, and those online banks have 0 fees when I pay with the cards in foreign countries. Day 4 - Train to Wakayama and hike to Koyasan
Day 5-7 - Return to Tokyo, stay in Akasaka
Day 8 - Day trip to Kamakura & Enoshima
Day 9-11 - Return to Tokyo, stay in Shibuya
Day 12 - Bus to Fujikawaguchiko for ryokan
Day 13-15 Bus back to Tokyo, stay in Ueno

If you want to experience Breath of the Wild and The Wind Waker in real life, go visit Ojika Island in Nagasaki

>Ojika Island Access: Our small island is located around 60 kilometers west of Sasebo Port in Nagasaki Prefecture. You can reach Ojika from Sasebo in as little as 90 minutes via a high-speed boat, or a regular ferry that makes the journey from Sasebo to Ojika in about 3 hours. Alternatively, there is an overnight ferry leaving Hakata Port in Fukuoka city around midnight, reaching Ojika at around 5 AM.

>From Ojika Island you can travel to Nozaki, Oshima and Mushima islands using the town-run boat Hamayu. There is also the Saikai boat that operates between Ojika Island and Noshima Island. The number of boats is limited so make sure you check the timetable when planning your trip.

Are you moving there or something? Because if you just go there on vacation every few years learning their language to fluency is a total waste compared to learning something like Spanish or Hindi
>>

For me, it's all just for fun. I never actually did any real "studying" beyond memorizing the kanas. I never opened an anki deck and I never managed to keep up with any grammar lessons for long.

I just have a pretty severe manga addiction. (And anime to a much lessor degree.)

I did apply for JET in my younger days and got rejected all 3 times. Now it's totally not worth the effort because the wage is poverty tier.

If I ever rage quit and become NEET, doing a 1 year visitor's VISA might not be so bad.

I plan to go from Tokyo to Nagoya to do the scenic route of the Nakasendo trail, stay over at Nagoya or one of the nearby towns if I manage to find reliable transportation to Kyoto. Then go there, then head to Osaka, and then back to Tokyo over night bus.

R8 or H8 my plan pls.
I could skip Nakasendo trail to save some money, but I might as well go all out considering I have no idea when I'll have the chance to come back.

I was very interested to stay a day or two at Koyasan.

I assume you plan to do part of the Kumano Kodo Route?
They have lodgings at the temples where they let you engage in the night and morning rituals and give you a meal, or have a night tour at the cemetery. This gives you the chance to explore in the early morning.
It is somewhat pricey however. Those monks probably rake in millions of gaijin dolla.

Finding a system you can stick to is key.

Personally, I started with Pimsleur audio lessons. I found it fun like a memory game and I listened to it during commutes and chores. This gave me basic listening skill, vocabulary, and grammar.

Then it was just decades of immersion - start with actually paying attention to what is said and match it up to subtitles and reading raw and translated manga side by side.

After I got better at it, I translated manga for a while too. This forced me to really understand the text and it was actually pretty fun but extremely time consuming. I had to stop after getting a full-time job.

Recently, I tried emailing a Japanese person to practice forming sentences, but she hasn't replied in months... Finding people who wanted to engage with a middle aged man in those language exchange app is pure pain so I have kind of given up. Maybe I'll go hang out in the Japanese thread.

I'm not going to lie to you I have 1200 days on Duolingo, it's the only thing I've managed to consistently put time into every day. I've tried anki in the past but I felt it more repetitive than even Duolingo, I wanted to make a custom deck but it was such a gigantic hassle that I just gave up on it altogether. There was a period when I was commited to learning 10 kanji per day and I basically spent every bit of free time I had at work trying to memorize those kanji, but now I'm a NEET and am unable to commit that much time to kanji learning.

Translating Youtube videos or some small manga is something I occasionally do, latest kanji combination learned was 新入り though I don't see myself using it anytime soon.

In most countries, you pay for a flight between major cities if you don't want to spend 8 hours on some bus.
That's what the shinkansen is. It's a flight that you don't have to show up at 6am for, you don't have to go through security for, you don't have to wait for delays for.
It's good value when you think about it.

Before you start bitching, tickets for boston to philadelphia (roughly the same distance as osaka to tokyo) start at $100 and you'd be riding a shitty amtrak for twice as long.

Is it weird to do some bar hopping in Tokyo for some drinks and to just enjoy the atmosphere? I'm a bit introvert and find it difficult to start conversations with strangers so that's why I'm a bit worried. I'm not even much interested in talking to others, just wanna have my drink. What's the bar culture there? Are you expected to socialice when sitting there?
>>
>>2858781
I haven't done this but I think you would come across as strange if you sat down in bars for the first time and just drank alone without talking to people. Many bars are basically seen as places for regulars to meet and chat together and with the owner. You could still do it but it would have to be in bars that are less "local" or more commercialized if that makes sense. If you speak Japanese very well to the point where you can have long conversations with strangers then you could easily do it and just chat casually while drinking.

As long as you just order beef, it doesn't matter if it's slightly raw. If you're that neurotic, there are tons of yakiniku/KBBQ restaurants in English-speaking countries which I'm sure have the cooking time guides online somewhere. Walking around Shinjuku at 10pm on Saturday looking for a place to eat made me realize the whole fucking place is a scam. Zero open restaurants in the busiest fucking city district on earth at peak time. Walk into the one in a million place that is still clearly open and they say they are not accepting customers anymore (maybe just a way to tell a tourist to fuck off). All the bars are either rammed with loud fucking Americans/Australian, or they are scam bars, or have cover charges, or all three. Evading Nigerians every corner. Tub? Smoking/non smoking? Laundry? Esims

Whats good
Cost (within reason, not paying like 100/+ for for 16 days, ill do 60-75 tops) not really an issue, i want something that "just works" no frequent disconnects or other shenanigans, not even a heavy phone user (probably just navitime, google, maps and translate really, not streaming movies or whatever) fine with paying for unlimited data, i just want something that ill land, swap over to it, and not have to think about it or tinker with it for the rest of the trip, just seamlessly doing what you would expect it to. Mainly going to be in tokyo, sapporo and osaka metro areas, which i assume should not be an issue as im not gonna be in the middle of bumfuck somewhere where only certain carriers are present etc...

Basically; what esim did you use on your last trip? Was it good?

Last time i went i think i got like a physical sim, slotted it in some old phone, used that phone as a wireless hotspot all day that i connected my *actual* phone to, etc.... it was a whole fuckin thing. It did work out perfectly fine, hoping the esim should be even simpler (if i pick the right one, most i looked into end up having some scary bad review somewhere but lot of that aggregated review stuff is kinda fake, so id honestly fine anecdotal reccomendations and condemnations from random people on 4chan more useful consumer reports)

I've been in Osaka for four days now and I gotta say that I'm not impressed. It just feels so trashy. What actually is the point of Kyoto and Osaka tourism? Osaka is Tokyo Jr. and there are so many other historic sites in the country with a fraction of the tourist crowds. Aside from Nara I don't see anything unique in Kansai actually worth going to considering how crowded and overpriced it is compared to very similar seeming areas elsewhere in the country.

I agree with you there. Overhyped and all the same no matter what temple you go to. The main station sucks too and i got lost in it.

I disagree, it's got daytrips to kobe, himeji and nara, i like the grid pattern, and the trains are simple.
Osaka is tokyo jr in the sense that its not as full on as tokyo, but contains all of the same stuff you like.

Honestly while there wasn't much to do in Osaka I didn't hate my time there. I did a daytrip to Nara and Himeji and both of those places were pretty incredible. Osaka itself didn't have much to see. The saving grace was the ramen I ate there everyday in Dottonbori, and Nipponbashi having some surprisingly good prices and unique anime merch.

What I did hate was Kyoto. Never again.

Sometimes the cold water pipe comes into contact with the hot water pipe and it makes the water go white/cloudy (from bubbles) but it's safe to drink. To test it leave a glass out for 15 min. If it's still cloudy or white stuff has collected on the bottom of the glass then don't drink it. If it goes clear and there's no sign of white stuff then it was just bubbles and it's safe to drink.

I don't know what it is but when I was there in January even though it wasn't that cold (never into the negatives C but low single digits most days) I didn't feel the cold the way I do in the Great Lakes area of North America. It's like they don't get wind chill or something because of weather patterns so -15 is only -15 not actually -25 because the wind is blowing knives.

I'd still wear a jacket but a lighter one than full on winter down-filled. Something fleece or linen that's ~1-2 inches thick. You'll be surprised how not cold you'll feel, especially if you do a lot of walking.

On a scale of retarded to genius, if i dont know a damn thing about photography (only picture i taken have been on various cellphones or Polaroids [not in a hipster way, just back when i was a kid and they were popular and much cheaper and straightforward than proper film cameras]); what if i wanna buy a camera at yodobashi in aki and try just like figure it out? Got the idea while i was looking at some dslr at costco, 6 years ago last time i went, i was considering learning and buying a "proper camera" before my trip but just didnt really get around to it. Im in the same boat again. Two more days at work, then im hopping on a 6am uber for a direct flight to tokyo. Im too late again. That said, could i just like get a camera and figure it out?

Tl;dr: how hard is taking pictures with a proper camera as a total beginner, would a camera purchased in japan (digital obviously) be suitable for an english speaker/reader and utter beginner? Or is this more of a learn cameras n shit before your next trip before bothering because "taking good pictures" is not something you can quickly fuck around with and get good at; just use your phone like you did last time, OR a just go to costco and buy that "rebel t7 dslr" because that has more english ui and documentation that a gaijin like you may be able to actually use and take some nice pictures with and japanese cameras would be very difficult for someone who is neither japanese nor good at cameras to use

Some pic i took last time thats under 8mb
>>
>>2859702
You just point at shit and take pictures.
Of course, there are many configurations you can make as an experienced photographer, but there's also plenty of "default" setups you can do after watching a basic youtube video. But for the most part, you can buy a camera, leave it as is and it'll likely be functional.

tl;dr: you don't need to have a career in photography in order to take pictures.

Phones do a lot in software, so after buying a big boy camera you can expect the first 500 to be shit until your technique improves. That said, like-new beginner gear is cheap on the used market, but it takes 2 weeks to ship out because the big shops are Jews and they close for sabbath. The T7 kit at Costco isn't a good value (because it's a factory-new DSLR designed a decade ago). You can buy cameras in Japan, the menus can be changed to English and there are great deals on used lenses.
Put it in Auto and hold your breath and make okay photos.

How does resolution vs clarity work? I got plenty of pictures from my 2019 phone camera (got a newer phone since then). The blurry ass one i posted earlier is mainly on account to size. All of my "good pics" taken on phone are 12/+ mb too big to post, yet yours is highdef.

Do you have any brand or model suggestions? The full extent of my camera knowledge is "slr and dslr" being good entry points. Noted on the costcocam being a bad deal, but say i were to go to yodobashi and try snag something to play with, brand/model/pricepoint?

>>2859708

>How does resolution vs clarity work?
It's mostly about the size of the sensor. Phones have tiny sensors and cope by postprocessing and more megapixels.

To start your gear collecting journey (let's be honest it's not really about photography), the big divide is dslr vs mirrorless:
DSLR
>old
The camera bodies are cheap, the amateur lenses are disposable, the professional lenses are affordable. But most of them are no longer in production, so factory warranty support is spotty. They have worse noise in low light conditions since the tech is outdated.
>bigger and heavier
>optical viewfinder
>long battery life
>worse video recording performance
>big ecosystem of lenses
>sovl? It has moving parts inside that make a nice *snap*
The leading DSLR brands are Canon and Nikon. In Japan the Rebel line is called Kiss. The T7 is Canon's entry model, Nikon's equivalent is D3400 or D3500. Nobody is designing new DSLRs so these will be the models forever.
Mirrorless
>new
>smaller and lighter
>digital viewfinder (a tiny screen for your eyeball), or no viewfinder entirely (use the big screen to frame your shot)
>more face/bird/flower detecting autofocus features
>better video performance
>worse battery life
The leading mirrorless brands are Canon, Nikon, and Sony.

Typical purchase is an entry level camera body, the bundled kit lens, and a 50mm equivalent lens. Come join the fun at >>>/p/gear (your fun may vary).

My dad was a professional photographer and I can tell >>2859734 is correct, however keep in mind that walking around with a proper DSLR or even mirrorless can be a chore while traveling - you should have a camera bag where you can store your lenses or extra batteries and which you can also use to hide your stuff if it starts raining for example. And of course, those camera bags tend to attract attention of thieves (although this is probably not an issue in case of Japan). So imagine walking around Japan with several pounds worth of equipment in a bag that is not going to be tiny (pic rel is similar to what my dad used). Obviously as an amateur you won't need that much but still, it's not like you can hide a camera into your pocket. When I was in Japan I occasionally saw tourists with such bags and DSLR cameras so it can be done but I can't imagine it being convenient.
Personally I got myself a compact camera and carried it in a very small bag on my shoulder, it was so light I barely noticed it while spending entire days on foot. This is the one I got: https://www.amazon.com/Fujifilm-X100V-Digital-Camera-Silver/dp/B084B438ZP?th=1 but there are cheaper ones, I think this is a good compromise between a smartphone and DSLR unless you really want to get into photography as a hobby.

yeah my dad used to have such heavy meme bag with straps cutting into your neck lmao but he was autistic about keeping lenses in mint condition so he picked some heavy duty one, imho lenses are the biggest issue, mirrorless cameras are really small these days but if you want a lense with longer focus those tend to be bulky

Very interesting... i guess may be more of something to get into when i return from this trip so as to be ready for the next one

Would yall say yodobashi has good deals? Value wise compared to just getting something locally or online? Any good specific brand/model you"d suggest keeping an eye out for? I guess i *could* buy a camera there, but not like carry it around all the time (only for like... specific destinations like the mikasa or zao village and just cameraphone most of the rest of the time)

That said; do you guys know anything about what i can do on camera phone (android) settings to make my pictures a more reasonable size? So i can A.
