Anyone else here not understand the obsession some people have with travelling to every country in the world or even to over 100 countries or whatever? I'm one of those people that's always wanted to travel but even if I add up all the countries I have any desire to see I only get to like 45 or so.

If I were a trust fund baby with $4000/month to spend, I'd fly much more frequently and stay in airport cities all over the world instead of spending months wandering from one small town to another in a single country (or state for large countries). It's enjoyable enough, but it doesn't look impressive on the world map.

BTW India better be on that list of 45.

This dude is obviously a youtuber getting money for that weird goal. I have seen his videos too and he really does go to the craziest shitholes humanly possible. Why I think a normal person would do it is they think its funny, they are rich, they are probably somewhat wired for sex addiction and manipulation, they think they will get to live some sick fantasies or maybe nice fantasies but its not normal thats for sure.

Part of it is dick measuring, part of it is the genuine desire to experience as much as you can before you die. Even if a location genuinely isn't that interesting for a vacation or tourism, it's still hard to resist the urge to just tick it off the list, both as a unique experience, and just to brag that you went and be able to form an opinion. Like if I was ever in Switzerland, a country with loads of interesting stuff to do, I probably couldn't resist taking a day trip to Liechtenstein, a place with hardly anything going on, just to say I went. It's like collecting things. You're collecting unique experiences. To some it's more appealing than going to Thailand for the 10th time.
In the case of Drew Binsky, it's also prob a content thing, but it works. How many other people can make a comprehensive ranking of every country on an entire continent, let alone 3, all based on their own experience. It's badass

I'm at 42 countries so far in my life and I'd love to visit 100 before I die. I've never traveled to a country just to check it off my list however. And most of the countries I've been to I explored thoroughly or came back a second time to explore in more depth.

I agree that people who only do this so they can say "I've been to x number of countries" are ridiculous. But I also feel that there are beautiful or interesting spots in at least 100 countries out there that I'd want to visit.

My goal in life is 50, I'm at 17 now and I'm 26 but I have several trips planned to get to 30 countries before I turn 30.
It's partly because I love geography and going to different places on a map. I agree that anymore than 50 I would struggle to think of what I want to see.
>>

My problem is when people measure how well traveled they are purely by the amount of countries they've been to, because I feel like it discourages people from further exploring other regions within those countries. Like they'll go to Berlin once and be like, "welp guess Germany is off the list", when really there's so much more that could be seen in different regions. This applies especially so to giant countries like USA or China, but even smaller countries too.

I'm 26 and only at 11, many of which were family trips from when I was very young. I lament that I didn't start solo traveling until 25 and got massive FOMO. I added 4 countries in the past 6 months, and if everything goes to plan, I could be at 16 by the end of this year, but it's all short term 10 day trips I take PTO for. Literally all I want to do is be unemployed and take a 2-3 month excursion across a continent, but idk if I can right now and it kills me. Even with several tens of thousands in savings, it's not worth the risk with no plan after it's over.
Damn I wish I was smart enough to travel back in college between semesters
>>
>>2856882
If it makes you feel any better I never got to go on any months long trips either, all of my solo travels have been 2 - 3 weeks. I just can't afford 3 month trips. I'm not sure if I would even like it, I'm always ready to go home after 3 weeks, I miss having my own bedroom and bathroom, hostels can be tiring, and hotels are too expensive
>>
I'm at 70 and there's maybe about 10 more I have much interest in or feel I need to see at least one country in their region to have a better understanding of the world, but after that it would be a real struggle and I'd much rather spend more time in places I know I like
>>
I barely have time to travel as it is. Instead of chipping away at one country for multiple years, I'd rather sample multiple countries within a year.

>but you're not getting a legitimate cultural experience!
I'm from a very boring country, it's not hard to make another country exciting, even if it's overdone pedestrian shit.

I plan to see more countries, but I want to visit those that have something truly unique about them. There's no reason to visit Norway, Sweden, and Finland when Norway alone has all of what the other two offer, plus it has great mountains. And instead of just staying in a capital city for 3 countries, I'd much prefer spending more time in one place and digging in deeper.

I think I'm currently around 18 countries. There's about 10 more countries that I really want to visit, and a bunch of countries that I've already been to and want to see much more of. There are a few that I'll probably hop into for a few days just because they're cheap to go to.

>There's no reason to visit Norway, Sweden, and Finland when Norway alone has all of what the other two offer, plus it has great mountains.
That's part of what I'm saying too. Some countries are just so similar to each other and others don't really have much in terms of unique sights or experiences. Like why would I go to Slovakia if I've already been to the Czech Republic? What the fuck would I wanna go see in Burkina Faso?

Look at his dead, vacant eyes. What a sad soul. Imagine letting any goals or passions you have in life be bled dry by your need for the approval of others. At least he gets paid, I see plenty of social media normies who, if you sat them down and asked them to explain why they went to Trolltunga or Bali or whatever, they'd genuinely be unable to tell you.
>>
>>2857119
You figure out what you want to see after you arrive in a place, not while you're still at home. Relying on Internet trends for the entirety of your travel planning will ensure there is nothing unique about your journey. Also, landing in one country, traveling overland and flying out of another country is a great way to rack up your count. Bonus if the flight savings from flying out of Helsinki cover the expense of the overland travel.
>>
>>2857119
God forbid you develop a personal connection to a locale. It's much easier to let the internet tell you where to go and what to think.
>>
>>2856844
It's social media bullshit for clout
Why would you want to visit any of 100+ terrible, poor, dangerous countries
>>
I want to visit every country in the world because why not. Some people collect pokemons and catch them all, I collect countries. I've already been to over 100, obviously the remaining ones are just getting harder and harder. I'm starting to run low on new countries to visit that are still safe and accessible.
>>
>>2856844
If was a trust fund kid I would happily travel nearly everywhere, I think I would only skip active war countries and a couple of African ones.
>>
>>2856844
It's a mindset born of ignorance and naïveté.
As you get older and wiser you realize you don't NEED to visit every country on Earth to have a good time.
Are you really missing out by not visiting Malawi or El Salvador? I don't think so
>>
>>2857183
They're pretty unique destinations, though?
>>
>>2857136
Please tell me about your brilliant ideas for a good time in Burkina Faso you posturing fag.
>>
>>2857189
>mask dances
>the home of west african music scene (jazz, hip hop
>camel rides
>waterfalls
>see hippos
>sindou needle peaks
>mud mosques

Its where the volta basin meets the sahel. There's bound to be interesting geographical and cultural things
>>
>>2857190
And you can do literally all of those things in larger, more interesting countries.
>>
>>2857194
You do (you), and let instagram guide you, goy.
>>
>>2857199
I don't give two fucks about instagram. You on the other hand, are trying really hard to act cool on an anonymous image board for sexpats cooming through SEA.

Burkina Faso is known as the land of the pure language and of the endless skies. Burkinabe-hating chuds will seethe.
>>
>>2856844
I'm at 80 countries. I kinda passively wouldn't mind getting to 100 but it's gonna be the longest stretch because I know what I like now and I know what countries I'd find shit without going. I still have sone on my bucket list though:
>PNG
>Sierra Leone
>Zimbabwe
>Chile
>Senegal
I did some new ones last year:
>Samoa
>Fiji
>East Timor
>Kyrgyzstan
>Uzbekistan (shit ass boring)
>>
>>2856844
I'm not really impressed with these people that go to every country. A lot of their stories from a country is they were there a few hours and then left for the next one. This guy in one of his videos said Andorra was one of the most boring countries he's been to but all he did was walk through the main street of the capital and then leave. He didn't even go on a fucking hike.
>>
>>2857241
>Uzbekistan (shit ass boring)
Really? Why is that? To me it seems by far the most interesting of the central Asian countries due to its well preserved silk road cities like Samarkhand and Bukhara.
>>
Box checking mentality. It doesn't matter if it's about traveling, restaurants, bars, foods, hobbies, or whatever: it's the mark of the midwit who thinks a wide (but shallow) set of experience matters. In reality, depth and understanding of a subject is what matters.
>>
>>2857288
Yes this is my problem with Drew its the ocean full of 1 inch of water syndrome. He has been to France but never been to the Eiffel Tower IIRC I was like what?? Even some of the most basic things you can think of he never went too.

So I don't know its pretty weird. Also he has this weird edgy hatred for Catholics I don't understand, saying one of the bottom 10 countries to visit is Vatican City. Come on dude they have a building that is a basically New World Wonder, not sure maybe that is exaggerating too much but that alone makes it top 75. Maybe #75. Anyway whatever.
>>
>>2857331
He said his reasoning is because Vatican is basically a giant museum that you only need to visit once, and he only travels for "the people and culture". Why he also hates Singapore.
>>
>>2857331
>he has this weird edgy hatred for Catholics I don't understand

Israel is the worst country I've been to as a Catholic so it absolutely makes sense...
>>
>travel board
>thread full of chuds saying travel bad
>>
>>2857298
>Really? Why is that?
Because every town has the same points of interest: ancient silk road architecture and that's it. The whole country has a sleepy vibe, kinda feels Mediterranean. Samarkhand and Bukhara exist nowadays soley for tourists. If you're not passionate about architecture or Silk Road history, you're just gonna shrug and say "cool" and then look up the neighbouring countries.

>>2856844
ill rather go to spain 10x times then visit random countries in europe just so i can say i was there
>>
>>2856844
I don't mind visiting the same country twice but I don't like visiting the same exact place twice. at least not frequently
>>
>>2857635
No one's saying travel is bad you illiterate moron. Just the kind of social media fueled competition of trying to travel to as many countries as possible just to cross it off a list and brag to your followers about how supposedly well traveled you are is bad.
>>
I needed to go to many places and see. Right now I just want to see the pyramids and I'd only bother travelling back to korea and japan for longer stays working remotely
>>
>>2858829
i did a random, last minute trip to Cairo to see the pyramids over the new year break. it was amazing.
>>
>>2857122
yeah, your'e not as deep as you think. I went to Bali, and I have no idea why i did. I also went to Dubai for a night for no other purpose than to tick a box, so i dont have to go there again. I do whatever tf i want. got a problem, cunt?

>I went to Paris and it was amazing

Peak NPC travel behavior.

Spending only one night in UAE is super comfy for some reason.

lol yeah I do have a fucking problem with you, stick to your Kuta Beach containment zone
>>
>>2857646
>Samarkhand and Bukhara exist nowadays soley for tourists
Oh come on, they're big ass cities. I agree there's fuck all to do outside of seeing the copypaste Persian architecture but they're not just tourist traps.
