Later this year, I will be travelling to Austraila with the gf. She wants to visit some family friends in Gold Coast and Sydney (approx 5-6 days in each location). Instead of flying from Brisbane to Sydney, I'm thinking of hiring a car and making a road trip out of it.
Are there any Ausfags or people familiar with Australia who can tell me if this is worth doing? And if so, what places on that journey are worth visiting? Byron Bay is an obvious one, but I'd be interested to hear of any others.
Gold Coast / Brisbane and Sydney recommendations would also be great if you have them. Thanks.

Honestly, most of what’s interesting in that trip is in the Northern Rivers region. Towns like Mullumbimby and Bangalow are pretty chilled, and the scenery around there is nice too.
All this stuff is within a hour’s drive of Gold Coast. You should hire a car and make a few short day trips during your time there. This big road trip you’re talking about will be a lot less interesting than you think.

Yes, absolutely worth doing.
If it were me and I had time:
Night 1 Byron
Night 2 somewhere in Dorrigo NP
Transit through South West Rocks
Night 3 Limeburners Ck Nat Park, just near Crescent Head
Night 4 Barrington Tops NP, then back to Syd through Putty.
