I need to get back to Memphis.

What places do you miss the most?

Is there any reason to visit Memphis if you are not a worshipper of African American culture? The city is objectively a shithole. There are many Midwest river cities which are much more pleasant than Memphis.

I miss pre-covid Japan. It's a different world now and it's just painful.

Yeah it actually breaks my heart. Overtourism has utterly killed the vibe. Used to hang out for months in Tokyo every summer between semesters and it was paradise.

I liked Taiwan. Want to go to the east coast and check out as much aboriginal stuff as possible. Also want to go back to England. I was disappointed I didn't get laid off recently because I would have crashed on family/friends' couches and applied for new jobs train hopping. It's such a pleasant country.

Hokkaido, Japan. Sadly there isn't a bullet train from Tokyo to Sapporo yet.

I was planning my first trip there right before covid hit and missed the window of opportunity by a few weeks. Knowing I missed out on the magic stings

It's the quickest way to get to the Ozarks from points east so you HAVE to go through it, maybe there's something redeeming there if you have to pass through anyways

I went to Memphis once. I was staying the night, coming through from new orleans after ditching some lunatic there and i felt miserable. I could have gone to that street and gone to a bar, but i was too depressed so i got bbq from some place and ate it in my hotel. In the morning i went to that big bass pro shops. That was cool.

Nashville is superior to Memphis in every way, though Memphis does get a bad rap due to all the blacks killing each other constantly. If you avoid that it's really a cool and underrated city.

Doubtful. You've just gotten a decade older and more jaded. You mope about the imperfections you ignored previously because you were enjoying it so much.

It was freezing cold and completely dead the one time I stopped over on Beal Street. The West Memphis truck stops are infamous for their lot lizards.
>>2858712
It's not just the murders; the neighborhoods are in an appalling state of disrepair, and even the riverfront park is ugly. My trucker brother encountered some thugs in a stolen BMW waving guns out the window and made a sudden U-turn through a handy gap in the median barrier to get away.

Spending USA-tier prices in a dump like Memphis makes no sense whatsoever from a world travel perspective. But if your whole world consists of Arkansas, Louisiana and Tennessee, then I reckon you gotta blow out your excess money somewhere so you can go back to wagecucking like a pig to its trough.

Did you go to Japan both before and after covid? Everyone knows this happened. I made friends with my regular hostel bar owner and when he saw me after covid and the tourism boom he looked at me like I was Death himself. The first thing he said to me was, "Tokyo has changed a lot, hasn't it."

I think Nashville and New Orleans are incredibly overrated, but they're better than Memphis

can someone draw me a map of memphis where you outline the good neighborhoods to see and the parts to avoid?
i like seeing large historic mansions and interesting architecture, but I wish to avoid diverse slums

Lived in Tokyo for a bit right before COVID and went back to visit Osaka/Kyoto this fall. I didn't feel much of a difference.

pretty sure it's almost all shit.
like that king of the hill joke. what's the bad part of memphis? memphis!

I mean there has to be some sort of interesting museum or good restaurant. I don't plan to spend that much time there, but just looking at a map, to drive from where I am on the east coast west to the Ozarks takes 2 days, and sort of necessitates two stops, one near Knoxville, and then again near Memphis. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad just for a meal, a museum, a nice park, and a one night stay.

There's some good barbeque but that's about it
Rhodes college is alright if you have an in but it's gated and for good reason

hmm ok is there anything an hour or two away worth seeing? I don't have to stay IN memphis proper, but I do have to head in that direction. I mean I guess the scenic way is to do a more northerly route but I don't think I have time for that, and certainly not in both directions.

gus's fried chicken in memphis (downtown) was so fucking good that i still think about it to this day many years later

Memphis is actually an underrated city in that most people think its the worst major US city when the reality is its something like the 10th or so worst. There’s more than enough to do on a weekend. The Beale Street thing is touristy but the musicians are legit and despite all that’s happened the delta still produces great guitar players. Clarksdale is still a worthy diversion and maybe a “see it while you still can” type place.

If you asked me to pick between Memphis and Milwaukee I’m taking Memphis, despite the gorgeous lakefront location, better architectural aesthetics and superior climate of Milwaukee. Memphis certainly has more going on than somewhere like Oklahoma City or Birmingham. I’d even rather visit Memphis than the Twin Cities in the .

Now is Memphis as good as the high livability middle sized cities like Greenville, Madison WI, Huntsville, GR etc.? Not even close. And it’s still super run down and shitty, but once you get past the appearances it has real appeal. Contrast that the aforementioned Milwaukee which looks like a gem but is actually just an empty city of nothing.
