Because 3d animation is meant for everyone, blue alien only has a niche audience. But I'm not interested in both.

Newfags that unironically believe furries/anthros are a recent thing instead of a cool concept humans have been interested into since the stone age will never not be funny.

Avatar 2 also made a shitton of money after coming out following a long hiatus. Who knows, maybe Zootopia 3 will shit the bed if they release it just a few years later like Avatar 3 did.

Avatar 3 didn't shit the bed because they didn't wait long enough, it shat the bed because it offers nothing new.

its the cumulative effect of neither film offering enough that was new. if Water and Ash had been folded into one movie, and the alternative 3rd had had some kind of ESB-level plot reveal, Jim would have 3x $2b movies.

The distinction between "films" and "cinema" died in the 1980s when every bum fuck podunk in America got their dirty hands on a 70mm projector, and every day since then the film industry has made less and less sense. Is animation cinema? Apparently since Akira was released on 70 and turned a profit, something Disney couldn't even pull off. Is a made-for-tv movie real cinema? Who knows. Is a 4 hour episode of The Joe Rogan Experience cinema? Possibly. What about Disney actors dressed up like Storm Troopers jumping in front of a green screen? Fine by me.

Avatar 2+3 wasn't one big story split in half, it was two movies with almost the same beats and set pieces, just with different story details that couldn't fit in one movie. I think general audiences picked up on that, which is why 3 never had a single-digit % weekly drop like the first two
