I totally agree.
It's hard to notice with the crazy ass filter Craven used, but one of her irises is also bleeding and very red, giving her a sort of demonic look for the final sequence in the hospital that I think works really well.

There's nothing schlocky about that though considering where she lost her head and the amount of time passed yeah animals and bugs are likely to become attracted to the stench. Context is important not to mention horror fans are the ones who routinely get mad and complain when these things aren't shown directly on screen but rather inferred because they just lack imagination. Allegedly AMC demanded the CGI bear in The Terror look more like a monster because they were worried about the reaction from the horror crowd if they were more subtle about it, but both Jared Harris and Tobias Menzies thought it was scarier when you didn't see it because of it.
I'm reminded of some /tv/ anons that literally had to be told what the horror scenes in Hereditary were because they genuinely thought only the climax counted so showing the decaying decapitated head and adding the ants on top clearly didn't help and some of you even think it's supposed to be funny even though the actual decapitation happens entirely off-screen and so the horror relies on its audience being able to empathise with the brother's horrified reaction and tremendous guilt, Aster showing the head afterwards was just a little bit of fanservice to the average horror fan. That's the level of stupidity filmmakers have to deal with if they want to reach horror audiences who demand to see explicit gore and violence and creepy aesthetics that they then laugh at for not being subtle enough >>217629013 and expect every horror movie to have the pacing of a slasher which is exactly what ruined Return to Silent Hill. There's simply no winning with such a fickle fanbase.

First, I have to say that this is not a zombie movie. Much like the Resident Evil games, it may have started that way, but at this point it's going off on a complete tangent.
28 Years Later was already separating itself from Weeks and Days, and this one really cements that. It's much more character-driven rather than plot-driven, like it expects that you're already over the apocalypse and are just sticking around. Disappointing if you're looking for something closer to what the series had established, but it does open the door for some interesting ideas.
With that said, once again, Ralph Fiennes is the most interesting thing about the movie. The kid from 28 Years isn't nearly as strong in this, as it focuses almost entirely on Dr. Kelson and Samson and doesn't really build on any other character very well, even the newer ones.
The cinematography is good, the story is fine, the script is okay, and the direction is mediocre, but on balance it's generally entertaining. It does feel like they basically handed the director some scenes that couldn't miss, and they still came out wrong. The Iron Maiden scene towards the end, for example, should have been 10/10 kino, but it ended before they really did anything with it.
Also, as a side note, horror is the only genre where I regularly see mens' penises. Even Ralph Fiennes got his dick out in this one. Full frontal male nudity has become so common in the genre. Is that all they can come up with to shock audiences these days?
Anyway, what did you guys think?

considering I heard a few scattered laughs in the theater when it happened, and I smirked a little at the execution because I'd heard about that part beforehand, I'd say it was schlocky
it's edited quickly and suddenly on purpose, but that's exactly how it would be cut if it was Dumb & Dumber gag where someone bonks their head and doesn't die

interesting that it's not really a zombie movie. the disgusting and unpredictable physical nature of the zombies in the first film was an appeal to me, I wanted to see more of that.

I'm conflicted as the plot sounds retarded, and it's poz'd as fuck, but Jap poz is different, and it's from Nishimura, so it should be ridiculously gore heavy.

That's me
>how did you like it in comparison to the previous film?
28 Years Later is a more complete story that tries to stay somewhat connected to the previous two movies. Bone Temple is much narrower in what it tries to do. It picks up directly after the last movie with no real abridging introduction, and then zeroes in on the characters while mostly avoiding any more worldbuilding or explanation of the global effect of the outbreak. I liked 28 Years more. Bone Temple could have been really cool for what it is, but like I said, it just falls short in the areas it could have excelled at. Some goofy acting, especially in the beginning, and scenes that don't reach their potential ended up holding it back.
>interesting that it's not really a zombie movie. the disgusting and unpredictable physical nature of the zombies in the first film was an appeal to me, I wanted to see more of that.
It mainly revolves around Samson, the Alpha zombie, but even then, it uses him in such a way that it's not recognizable as a zombie film. Regular zombies make up maybe 5% of the film, and it leans much more into the "humans are the real enemy" theme that zombie franchises always turn into. The stylistic changes aren't really what I wanted from this series, but I'll probably end up seeing the next one as well when it comes out, just to see it through.

Yes I know that modern theatergoers routinely laugh at serious scenes but that doesn't mean it's appropriate to laugh just because you're all a bunch of irony poisoned idiots. There's absolutely nothing that's supposed to be funny in The Shining either but people will still laugh at it in the cinemas because of scenes like Jack staring into the air with a sinister smile as we're shown he's slowly losing his sanity and films are a visual medium with a short runtime that it has to make the most of and some anons on /tv/ are definitely part of that crowd.
>it's edited quickly and suddenly on purpose
Yeah it relies on the shock factor to disturb you because you aren't expecting it to be shown if it wasn't already before that point like the brief flashes of Pazuzu we see in The Exorcist.
>but that's exactly how it would be cut if it was Dumb & Dumber gag where someone bonks their head and doesn't die
You thought we were shown the decapitation explicitly though. That's entirely your own mind misremembering the scene as something it wasn't and in fact you still do. >>217628951
>kids head is yeeted off in hilarious scene
>>
>>217630822
>You thought we were shown the decapitation explicitly though.
No. If it had been explicit, it would be as comedic. But with a reaction shot of the retarded girl's face and a big THONK noise, it becomes funny.
And that other post you quoted wasn't me wasn't me.
>>
>>217630822
I agree with you totally that plebs will laugh because they've watched too many Marvel films to take anything seriously, but people often laugh as a reaction to being confused and grasping for the nearest similar touchpoint.
I found it just awkward because it wasn't really in line with what had preceded it, and is also an unexpected pivot in the plot. At that point you have no idea what the film is actually about and for all you know it is taking a weird pivot into comedy. Beau Is Afraid had some moments that had me howling.
On a rewatch where you know where it's headed, it's probably an easier film to digest.
>>
>>217630865
>But with a reaction shot of the retarded girl's face and a big THONK noise, it becomes funny.
All this tells me is that her being ugly is what makes it funny to you rather than how the scene was depicted or edited. She was gasping for air because she had an allergic reaction to the cake that's why she stuck her head out the window it's not like she was sticking her tongue out in an exaggerated manner like we will probably see in Scary Movie 6 if it gets parodied. Should they also have used no sound effect at all for when her head smashed into the pole or what?
>>
>>
>>217631047
I feel like with horror comedies they very quickly establish the overall tone and feel is less serious though because a lot of jokes barely need any buildup to land so they're rather easy to throw out in droves constantly you don't even need to establish who a character is or what their motivations are for them to be funny they either are or they aren't whereas even fast paced slashers have to spend at least a little bit of time establishing locations and who the potential victims are in order for any kind of suspense to work. Hereditary first establishes itself as a more serious slow burn film with character drama rather devoid of any humor until we get to the more explicit horror parts that are also a bit more spaced out in between.

Just finished. From Mill Creek's Drive-in Classics box, this is more of a conspiracy thriller than a horror, but with with that title and cover, you see how they were selling it. German movie shot in America, a couple are honeymooning in New Mexico and stop a motel called Honeymoon Inn, and are almost immediately accosted by a mysterious ambulance. They abduct the husband but the girl manages to escape and goes on the run, trying to find and rescue her spouse. She teams up with a passing trucker and it's no surprise based on the title that it turns outthere's a ring of international organ harvesters behind it. I think one person dies total in the whole thing, there's no nudity, it's a very tame affair that could've been a tv movie. Apparently the director and lead actress are both well known in Germany. I liked the kinda Tangerine Dream-y music..

The first movie is genuinely great with one of the most legendary twists OAT and speaking of Saw 3 that one has some legitimately underrated performances by its leads, but it's the first movie that gave the franchise its reputation as torture porn. After that all the sequels just said fuck it and went all in on the elaborate death traps and mystery and focused on having an overarching narrative with Hoffman and have everything be interconnected. It's the only horror franchise I can think of that ever did that. They originally planned for the saga to end with 8 movies if VI hadn't underperformed and you can kind of tell since 3D would still be the worst one if not for Spiral.

A quality projector is expensive, while you can get a massive 70"+ TV for cheap. OLED TV will be more cost-efficient compared to a projector. Plus, setting up a projector + screen is more cumbersome. Too many retards tearing their ceiling down because they don't understand how to install a projector.

It's still going to be high energy blue light. That it's cheaper doesn't mean it's replicating the experience. Going to mcdonalds to talk to your chatgpt gf over the dollar menu isn't going to replicate going to Vegas with your high school sweetheart
Horror movies are comfiest in cinemas and on shitty CRTs off bootleg VHS. When you can see the table in front of you lit up by the giant light box, there's very little risk of something coming out of the dark

Just finished. Fucking boring Indian folktale thing where a runaway slave in the 1700s stumbles onto an empty mansion in the forest and is invited to stay by the master. Of course, he won't let him leave after. Nice looking B&W photography and that's about all that's good I have to say about this. It's two and a half hours and the first two are just the guy asking politely if he can go yet and the master laughing at him. Also has the gall to try and pull some moral lesson at the very end that doesn't connect to anything that's been happening. In my experience so far, India has no idea how to do horror and this didn't change my opinion.

Its mainly within the context of when it came out, some people wanted something different and its not for me, but I have my own things I like and its just for a certain audience. Its just more overexposure to critics propping up A24's works and Jordan Peele as a "master of horror" that me jaded towards them over the years, especially since the latter only really did one good film in the form of Nope (which still could have stood to have a shorter runtime).

If the terms have to mean different things, I would say a gory movie has a lot of blood, guts, etc but uses them mostly as an aesthetic, like Hellraiser or TCM, while a splatter film uses blood more actively, splattering it all over the set as part of the action of the movie, like Evil Dead or Dead Alive

Shame on critics. Shame shame shame.
This boring, witless wannabe slasher movie posits that contracting rabies will turn a chimpanzee into a diabolical Michael Meyers. The Ten Little Indians are vapid, indistinguishable young people, and I hate young people.
The dumb scientist father (also he's deaf, and can grunt but not speak) learns that the critter that bit his monkey had rabies - but he doesn't leave his book signing and check on his kids that don't answer the phone because "Hawaii doesn't have rabies".
At least they used animatronics/ a midget in a monkey suit rather than CGI; that would have really sucked. A couple of good kill scenes.

Impressive cast of oldies, even though it looks like shit. If there's enough practical effects it could be fun.

I can already tell this is gonna be another thrill-hor that's not worth watching. Or at least, doesn't scratch the itch of an actual horror and exists just because a twist some screenwriter thought up.

The Grudge is Japanese and the American remake was directed by the same guy who did the original JP one and The Others is an English-language International co-production starring Nicole Kidman from 2001 that takes place on some British isle after WW2.

"Primate" isn't science fiction or fantasy; they have to play by the rules of their genre.
A mammal in a rabies frenzy doesn't methodically stalk victims, let alone wave their victim's car keys in front of them to mock them.
If you're enthralled by this kind of witless nonsense then you're not a bright guy.

it's me the anon who keeps watching Castle Freak and I watched it again and I want to articulate something that always bothered me but that I never really thought about it's how when you first meet Agnese she seems like she's literally pretending to be a creepy old lady and like talking all slow and stilted and saying basically nothing
>You....are the signora and signorina of the castle....I.....am...de housekeeper...
>You stay only...a little in the castello? That's...good. You sell and then you go...soon...you sell....and then you go.......soon...
And you're like watching like "Ok this bitch is weird she definitely is in on this somehow what the hell is she planning?"
John even makes a little microexpression after she leaves like "What's with her?" so I know I'm not imagining it
THEN LATER in like the next scene she's in when John finds her she's like
>Oh hey what's up cut your hand in the middle of the night? Here have a glass of wine with me I'm about to spill all the tea on this fucked up duchess
and she's totally normal like she dropped the whole trying to be sinister thing it just always BUGGED me but I might be reading too much into it I dunno.

Just finished. Another Letterboxd Top 250 Horror and as usual, it isn't horror. It's a drama, but it's SO BLEAK that it's easy lump in with horror. Plus it's narrative is kicked off with the discovery of a horribly mutilated woman's corpse. Simple enough story, bored housewife becomes a hooker. It's another Sion Sono that stars his gorgeous wife is is profoundly blackpilled about women, which adds to the bleakness. This is a guy who directed her in hardcore porn after all. Long, two and a half hours, and she gets naked a lot. >>>/gif/30183622
This flick bummed me out.

Yeah. And this is a movie about a woman cucking her husband so it makes the depressing aspects even more depressing. Like this guy has SERIOUS problems with women and the fact that a place as left-brained as letterboxd loves this movie, even with him being cancelled, just ups the bleakness level of the whole affair. If you watch the documentary about him called The Sion Sono, it really points out how messed up their relationship is. She was a high level gravure model and then married his alcoholic ass and he got her to start doing boing actual porn at the same time as prestige pictures. Just weird dark stuff all around this movie.

Kek, I'll have to check it out. My favorite quote from him is probably
>I don't give a flying fuck into a rolling donut what Al Pacino thinks. Is that an answer to your question?
>>
>>217656948
It's very good, but it's not even close to horror, it's a coming of age story about bullying. There's nothing supernatural, nobody dies, it's a drama top to bottom about kids at water polo camp. Saw it in the theater and liked it along but if anyone's telling you it's horror they're outright lying.

Idk then, it was the closest FF I could think of with found footage in a box in a basement and developing a sudden murderous stalker
Try to narrow it down a bit: by tape do you mean VHS, or could we be going for anything from minidiscs in Butterfly Kisses to audio in Session 9? Any other details?
