>this comes out today
>almost every seat for every showtime filled, including 10 pm

>google it
>it's some "Markiplier" youtuber bullshit

Is this the start of the zoomerpocalypse of film?

It's based on a video game, the game is actually pretty light on story but has interesting lore. My local theatre is also booked until Sunday except for the noon or 3 PM viewings those are half full only.

If this does well expect Markiplier to die in a terrible car accident due to faulty brakes. There is nothing that terrifies Hollywood especially now that they are declining than self distribution. They destroyed Louis CK's career when he tried

The movie was entirely finished long ago. Markiplier negociated with distributors for a year to get it to cinema to avoid direct to streaming, but he did get offers for that when it was initially finished.

i hate the zoomer tuber thing of mashing up their real with some 'gamer word' to get their screen name. they don't know how much it exposes that their interest in games is just a pose in search of general attention and fame

There's additional conflict with the people who sent him down there, Mark's character has a backstory, the universe is more fleshed out, and there's more than just the goal of "take pictures of the weird shit until you die."
The last 45 minutes or so are pretty much entirely cosmic horror that wasn't even implied in the game, but I personally think it works well in tandem with some other plot elements

the game creator made some addons but basically
>after the quiet rapture there's 2 main factions, the COI (generic human goverment/alliance) and eden (religious cult)
>main protagonist was involved with eden in some form and also the destruction of a space station, the whole reason he's a convict in the first place
>there's other characters that actually talk
>he actually goes back to the surface early in the movie, but gets sent back down to explore further
>he "hallucinates" a figure on the ship and a voice talking to him through the radio who tells him to go to a specific location, going to this location triggers a massive vision
>he finds the wreckage from a former expedition, turns out the voice he heard was the voice of the woman from said expedition
>but it turns out he wasn't hallucinating and the voice was actually the monster that has been following him and that killed the previous expedition
>said monster also either has something to do with the quiet rapture or at least actually knows what happened
>main goal goes from just taking pictures to sending the data from the last 2 trips
also turns out the blood ocean isn't normal and can infect?/transform people, basically a lot of body and cosmic horror elements added

in any case it's an example of mashing your real name into some word, which is the repellent part. ask yourself if anyone you know would do that when going on the internet, of course not. The non-facebook/ig internet is for expressing your secret base self, not getting people to see you under your irl name
>>
>>217670453
It's much more Cthulhu-y most of the time but it's also suggested that it has no consistent form
To be honest I was kind of confused by the only moment we see it from outside of the sub, but that may have been intentional

sort of?
there's not many shots where you can see it fully because they made the monster so fucking huge, but it has way more teeth and its bright red
biggest difference is that the monster is telepathic and doesn't want humans to know the "truth", not sure if it was just about the moon or the rapture

Zoomer here but never seen any streamer or youtuber. While I do know of Mark from second hand mostly, I find it grim that this is what my fellow zoomers do show up for at theaters and not kino.
No, I am not ironically posting wrong generation bait.

I think a lot of it is that they want to financially support their parasocial YouTube friend as opposed to giving money to some faceless Hollywood goons, regardless of the quality of cinema in question

Just got back from watching it. Bunch of smelly fat millennials and cringe zoomers crowded the theater tonight. Markipliers acting is definitely a bit rough. He liked to do this thing where he'd start a line in a normal voice, THEN YELL THE LAST FEW WORDS BECAUSE HE IS ACTING RAHHH. I can see the potential but the movie really lacked "that" scene you know? That scene being the one where Mark captivates you and really shows off his chops to justify the solo performance. It just never happens unfortunately. Despite marks rough performance, the movie actually doesn't seem to fall flat. Mostly thanks to an extremely strong concept and execution. Tension is built incredibly high as moments pass and the real captivation comes from the discovery you experience along with Simon as he begins to unravel with each button press. Okay, I'll stop being so masturbatory. If you have a few hours to kill and can enjoy a "man stuck in a dangerous box" concept, give it a rip.

I watched it. I was following its development because I was curious how they would make a movie out of a 1 hour game with nothing really happening aside from ambient spooky noises. My reaction: a lot of “what is happening” and an occasional “is something gonna happen?” a couple of times I thought perhaps this shouldn’t have gone on for two hours. I couldn’t make out a lot of the intercom voices. the blood is oozing and disgusting. It’s not really scary at all, more like wtf schizo tier scary. It really is faithful to the game mostly . Keep in mind I’m not a movie watcher, I rarely watch films so my standards are probably low. Regardless, I think I give it a B- or C+

I kept waiting forthe fish to eat the subbuthe destroys the sub from the inside and it explodes inside the fish's mouth.I was like damn, Markiplier spent $4m and drowned in fake blood tokill the fish..
It'd be like making a movie ofDuck Hunttoshootthedog.
I was wondering how they were going to make a one hour game into a two hour movie. And the answer seemed to be turning the fish into anAlzabo.
>>
>>217666477
You move around without seeing the outside of the submarine except for shitty black and white photos, so you heavily rely on a map and coordinates.
The horror comes from the sounds you hear from the outside mixed with the tension of accidently crashing into something.
It's a fun for its short duration.

how did a low effort 30min indie-slop "game" become the source of a movie played in theatres?

that's exactly it, they mindlessly listen to some retard with whom they have a parasocial relationship and that guy has to churn out new content so he's scraping the bottom of the barrel for things to use for that purpose. The result is that he finds trash like this and zoomers end up consuming it secondhand basically, so "blood ocean" and "deep lore" sounds super epic and deep and whatever else because he's playing it up and performatively reacting while they half listen while doomscrolling TikTok and DoorDashing a $35 burrito bowl

Personally I found the game browsing the switch eshop and its thumbnail stood out to me. Read the premise and thought it was cool, bought it, played it, and it wasn’t until later that I learned it was super popular. i thought it was unbelievable markiplier would make a movie out of this game of all the things he’s played.

I loathe streamer culture so much, trillions of kids hanging off every word of some retard that goes completely unchecked (other than making sure that he says "unalive" instead of "kill" of course)

I realized this during 2001ASO. A flickering light timed to speech counts as a character to an audience. Yeah, I admire this movie more than I liked it. When I like a movie, I go out of my way to talk about it. For this, I'd rather talk about getting the most out of everything and the techniques used than the actual movie which is mostly a guy walking from the front of a windowless sub to the back of the windowless sub and going insane. But they really ramp up the claustrophobia when he goes into a crawlspace.
The haunted sub element really helped expand the plot. I imagine the fish monster being psychic is the answer for the spooky shit that was noticeably absent from the game. I'm sure the fat pollack who made the game didn't mind, he got a story consultant credit so he officially signed off on all additions to the concept. Now with the Mortuary Assistant being released next month, how long until a That Which Gave Chase movie?

Just came out of a screening
Actually a relatively long movie at 2 hours
What I wanted out of the movie was just "Iron Lung, expanded" and that's exactly what I got. Some dialogue is difficult to hear, but you have the full story by the end of the movie. They even manage to have some body horror. I don't watch Markiplier, but he was sufficiently angry and exasperated throughout the movie to provide the one-man performance energy.
I'm very satisfied with what I got. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the best horror movie of 2026.

Why the hell would I do that? I went to a horror movie, not a horror movie based on a game I've never heard of starring a YouTuber I never heard of. If I can't understand the movie without knowing the game, the movie is a failure, end of story. I was bored TO DEATH. I didn't go to a GameStop, I went to a theater. If the only people who are expected to enjoy this are gamers, the movie's going to die a quick fucking death. Silent Hill already fucked up and died doing the same thing

Just got back from seeing it. I enjoyed it. I don't know how easily I could recommend it to your average movie goer but I liked it. I think I'll need to watch it again at home at some point so I can relisten to some of the dialog parts aboutGod and the lightthat were hard to hear in my theatre.
>>
>>217674058
That was a mixing problem. The easiest place to make out a movie's dialogue should be the theater, but Mark consciously decided to make all the most important dialogue two staticy intercom voices talking over each other with himself yelling at them. Just absurd

I can see that. The descent into madness kinda mirrors stuff like *Event Horizon* or even *The Lighthouse*, where the line between real and imagined is totally obliterated by isolation. The corruption acting like some kind of sentient force could easily just be his own psychological breakdown trying to assign meaning to a senseless situation. All those visions and voices felt more like manifestations of guilt or fear than actual external threats.
Honestly, it makes the ending even bleaker.
>>
>>217674966I don't know, I think the idea that the ocean of blood might be some kind of horrible gestalt of melted down humans is pretty horrifying. Or at least that's the impression I got from the recording where the woman starts freaking out saying something like "it's human blood, the blood is us!". I need to hear some of the dialog again so I can better understand the concepts and how the creature might be some kind of interdimensional god or god-like being and how the ocean might be some kind of horrible version of an "afterlife". There was a lot of shit to try and follow in that second half and I'd be lying if I said I could fully understand it with just one viewing.

I don't think it's a bad movie on its own merits, but it's definitely not a horror movie until the last 30-45 minutes. The marketing did a shit job of portraying what the movie actually is.
It would also help if he'd gotten over his hubris and cut out like 30 minutes of walking back and forth.
>>
>>217674085
>>217674058
Yeah, that's been a common complaint. The audio mixing was pretty shit, a lot of the time. I also had trouble seeing what the hell I was looking at, sometimes, because it was so fucking dark. I know it's supposed to be dark because it's a submarine, but there were multiple times where Simon reacted to something I couldn't fucking see.

I think if you get through the movie without understanding at least one theory of what's going on, you either weren't paying attention or are actually retarded.
Some things are left ambiguous on whether they're real, but it's not a complicated plot outside of that.

You’re a 20-something American who gave up on your youtube channel (and/or twitch channel). You aren’t ready to admit that the unfulfilling and unhappy state of your life is largely a result of your own decisions, and not some grand cosmic punishment inflicted on you by the fates or your parents or whatever other entity you blame for your disappointment with life.
So you flit through your days, floating on ennui, doing the bare minimum to get by, and avoiding your disappointed inner child by dressing down easy accessible media and trying to pull others down to your level.
But they don’t know you exist. Nobody does. and Year over year, day after day, it becomes harder and harder to pretend you don’t know the score. The reason you’re unhappy is because you wanted more from life; the reason you don’t have what you want is because you’re too scared or embarrassed to live through the learning experience and growing pains to get there.
Consume your kino, pat yourself on the back for being a consoomer with pretension to culture, grow old and die unhappy and unfulfilled.
Or go do something with your life that’s worth talking about.

The movie recreates a game about one man welded into a submarine navigating a mysterious ocean of blood. You must decide whether that's a good experience or not, because for other people "good" would mean another star wars or Dune full of battles and vast casts
>>
>>217681615
A guy leaving the showing before mine said "It did everything it needed to do to be a good movie." That's a great way to put it. Before the FX shots in the third and fourth acts, it get a LOT out of flickering lights and LEDs. If you like filmmaking, you will admire getting the most from the least. If you're a normie, you will say nothing happens for an hour. If this was a studio movie, there would have been many more external shots of the submarine as opposed to one during the climax.
If you can make it through the longest 45 minutes in film aka Wavelength, you can make it through Iron Lung. The only real gripe I have is that you can tell this was a single brained script from a neophyte because the convict seems to understand concepts he shouldn't for the sake of moving the plot along.

Movie Made me think of some weird combination of Saw 1, the beginning of Oldboy, most of Cube, and the set design for something like city of lost children, or maybe more accurately the creepy fallout bunker film that director made beforehand.

these people actually think he's their friend
I have made this mistake as an autist thinking bullies IRL were my friend. But how do these normalfags think some eceleb to whom they're a number on a spreadsheet is their friend? Everyone "knows" but they still act the wrong way...

The plot does develop, things aren't as simple as initially set out. Like the game, the tension and deterioration increases throughout the movie. I think the effects, without giving anything away, did the job. I'm just more satisfied that there are no blatantly stupid decisions in the movie, which is often what annoys me most. The movie isn't just talking (e.g. Locke), there's a lot of interaction with the environment. I don't watch Markiplier at all, so the name meant nothing to me.

>eceleb
Y'know you're on the internet right? Shit, it'd be one thing to scoff at internet celebrities but what the fuck are you doing? You should be scoffing at normal celebrities, "pfft, normal celebrities? Why aren't they on the internet?", like that

>>217684342
this is a discussion thread you underage brown faggot, this is not a 'comment section'
this reminds me of when newfag teenyboppers find out about le edgy old Internet site and come here and act shocked when it's not a kiddie table like their discord/roblox chat on twitch/etc
>>
>>
>>217684442
I don't understand why you people even come here. Just stick to youtube, braindead NPC. You are exactly like the boomers with Fox News and other Talmudvision worship. "Digital native" normalfags were a mistake.

>disprove
you act like you provided proof by using the term semantics. You didn't even attempt to support your argument. Given that, any disagreement could be framed that way. It's a waste of my time to argue with some youtube comment section meatbot, I'm just here to hurl vitriol at you and try to coax you into explaining yourself, which you'll never do because you can't... because there is no rationale to any of it. You are just a consoomer

I tried to show my nephew this site over the holidays and he kept referring to threads as "the chat" and was perplexed when the file selector menu didn't autopopulate with searchable gifs. Giving normies social media from a young age is worse than the boomer lead poisoning phenomenon by far.

>You didn't even attempt to support your argument.
Let me spell it out then
>4chan
>OP makes a post
>all replies are in the thread
>Youtube
>OP makes a comment
>all replies are in the thread
Now apply the same standard to yourself and explain the significant mechanical difference beyond the ability to add images
>>
>>217684649
The chat? That's fucking grim. What gets me is that these people they don't go to forums, don't use websites, nothing but social media and streaming, every single day all day. How is it possible not to get bored? Not asking for coders here, but a bit more curiosity? Piracy? Nothing.
>>
>>217684650
Threading as you describe is just a matter of formatting--it's really the only sane way to do comments and replies. But that doesn't mean everything that utilizes threads is a "comment section"--that's ridiculous. Even Discord has threads nowadays and that's a chat application.
Threads on a traditional forum or imageboard imply a certain structure; OP is not just a "comment" but often a long-form post, and replies are meant to be on topic. In the case of an imageboard, OP's comment and pic/video are the subject and tone, whereas on something like YouTube, the product (usually a long advertisement nowadays) is the subject and the 'OP' of a thread is just a commenter generally spamming some one-off braindead mass appeal nonsense or other form of engagement bait in order to farm upvotes. The comments there are also heavily moderated and get buried by engagement bait comments rather than being displayed sequentially as they are here and on traditional forums.
There's more to it than this, but that's a good start. This is not a "comment section." You are a retard.

>>217684788
You're stating the difference in context and how it's commonly used, but the mechanics are the same. You can make a 10,000 character comment on Youtube if you really want to.
>the 'OP' of a thread is just a commenter generally spamming some one-off braindead mass appeal nonsense or other form of engagement bait in order to farm upvotes.
yeah like you never see this on /b/ or /tv/

Wrong, there are updoots, comments are not displayed sequentially but according to their updoots or downdoots, also shadowbans, there is no media sharing, the topic is not the OP but rather the video AKA the advertisement you're watching

Also correct: The audio mixing was pretty shit a lot of the time.

>It sounds like this is more a personal vendetta with youtube if you're focused on calling every video an advertisement
or maybe that's just an accurate assessment of what it is and how it's used today, newfag. Youtube was great prior to about 2017/2018. I bet you don't even remember the great memory holing and all of the >this video may contain fake news. Were you even over the age of 12 in 2018?

It's self-financed and self-distributed. The only gotcha would be if he promised points to any of his crew or whatever. Otherwise it would seem the rest goes back to him.
Honestly I don't care for him as a YouTuber but I have a lot of respect that he used his money to make a passion project film and did it entirely on his terms.
If his fans weren't so obnoxious I might have gone to see it this weekend.
>>
>>217666220
I mean, this actually released national distribution in theaters. How many theaters did Space Cop run? I want to give them the benefit of the doubt, but Space Cop was an insanely low-effort, low-budget effort. I submit as an example how to do ultra-low budget well is The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra. A hilarious, clever parody of 1950s sci-fi b-films, it was shot on video for like $50,000 over a weekend and is light years ahead in terms of quality, and by people with much less production experience than RLM.
