>Lisa cheats on Tommy with his best friend
>Lisa lies about Tommy to get everybody to turn against him
>Tommy goes on a downwards spiral that eventually leads to his suicide
>Throughout all of this, Lisa is completely remorseless, doesn’t even care at all, just a pure cold-hearted bitch
>She did all this because she was bored one evening
Ummmm…. Why is this movie bad again? Because the lead actor has a funny accent? My man Tommy was trying to warn all of us.

this movie is literal proof that america has a very strict caste system and that tommy wiseau's awareness of it in his immigrant experience did not help because of how absolute and sublimated it is in american culture. I'm not being funny. I agree with you. The production has more social realism and production than most dramas made in the last ten years.

I think too many people began to realize the story was actually based and redpilled
People used to mock the movie for Lisa being written as a chaotically evil woman with no real goals other than causing mayhem and drama, but people have apparently wised up.

>Why is this movie bad again?
it was made to look and feel like a bad movie. tommy and whoever was funding him decided to make a movie so bad that it becomes a cult classic.
he had a pretty big pr company dedicated to make a cult classic and profitable movie.
i fell for the bullshit but started noticing a lot of holes in the metaplot
>stupid immigrant with no recorded background but lots of money
>makes dumb movie
>bunch of hollywood connected comedians and radio shows start talking about it and promiting

It had to do with the mystery surrounding it in LA. Wiseau leased a prominent billboard on some major highway and the movie poster was up for YEARS. And I guess it was running in a few theaters (LA has a lot of movie theaters that do second run, extended run, special programs, etc) and word of mouth got around and it began running as a midnight movie and just caught on.

"The Room" was Tommy's honest attempt at film-making and stardom. He just has a thick foreign accent and has odd mannerisms on top of that so everything just comes off very funny. If he hired an actor to play the role of Johnny and hired a script coach to polish up the writing and make it sound more genuinely American, this would have been a completely harmless melodrama of the 2000s.

>>217761390
I also find it fascinating. Like it looks like a relatively normal movie at first glance but you start watching it and realize something is weirdly off in every way. The acting is stilted, the writing is awkward and at times bizarre, there are elements that appear for seemingly no reason like a framed photo of spoons or the mother suddenly saying she has breast cancer and it never comes up again. Just a weird flick from another dimension. After Last Season is similarly fascinating for this reason.

>"The Room" was Tommy's honest attempt at film-making and stardom.
no, it was created to be as retarded as possible. it's a comedy/parody.
greg probably knows but the rest of the cast and crew probably doesn't.
>>

>>217761532
>no, it was created to be as retarded as possible. it's a comedy/parody.
Mike Stoklasa mentioned this possibility in the RLM bandcamp commentary tracks.
If that is the case, they showed real restraint not just straight up shoving boom mikes in the shot, etc, which would have been very easy to do.
I'm not against the theory that this was bad on purpose for political reasons, but I'm interested to hear the motive.

Why is The Room bad?
>bad acting across the board
>plot is nonsensical, subplots get added and dropped out of no where, character motivations make little to no sense, bad pacing
>bad ADR
>overly long sex scenes that add nothing to the movie
>terrible looking sets
>a lot of the shots look pretty terrible
The reason The Room is funny and caught on is because it is genuine. It has a level of actual budget and actual production beyond people intentionally just making slop. Tommy Wiseau thought he was making A Streetcar Named Desire.
>>217761532
It was not. If you look at everything Tommy has done SINCE The Room he is trying to make those 'so bad it is good' and it doesn't work.
>>
>>
>>217761362
>Why did THIS movie become an insane cult classic while the others were forgotten?
because Wiseau ran a billboard advertising the movie for over 5 fucking years. that's the only reason. everyone else who replied to you is a retard.

I read the Disaster Artist, and that book made me realize how much of a parasite Greg Sistero was. Guy basically leeched off Tommy like a total user, and then has the gal to pretend like he was doing him a favor and he's above it all. If it wasn't for Tommy, Greg would have just been one of the thousands of no-name wannabe be failed actors that end up working in retail.

Denny is the most unhinged mf in that movie.

> I just like to watch you guys.
> Thirsting over Lisa, even tho his gf is also called Elisabeth.
I bet he fucked Tommy's corpse too after the credits.

Why is life bad?
>bad acting across the board
>plot is nonsensical, subplots get added and dropped out of no where, character motivations make little to no sense, bad pacing
>bad ADR
>overly short sex scenes that add everything to the emotional baggage
>terrible looking work and home
>a lot of life look pretty terrible

>bad ADR
I was introduced to The Room through that episode of Tim and Eric Awesome Show
They play the flower shop scene completely unedited
I thought it was a joke Time and Eric did until I saw the actual movie

Obviously he was from the future retard
>Talks with a weird accent because that's future people accent, has no recorded background because he hasn't been born yet, lots of money from the future
>Makes an expose warning his bros about what women in the future are like
>Hollywood connected comedians and radio shows start talking about it because these are the ones who know he's a time traveler and they don't want him fucking their shit

Trust me bro all you need to do is think outside of the box. I mean what even is a box? Four sides with a top and bottom? Huh...just like a (the) Room. See what I'm saying? Two wrongs don't make a right, but too many coincidences do give you the answer.

Elaborate on the caste thing
Are you saying the story is about being stuck in a societal strata, or are you saying people mocked Wiseau for being an obvious weirdo foreigner who thought he could be a movie star despite not fitting the mold at all?
>>
>>217761043
At the start of the film:
>If a lot of people love each other, the world would be a better place to live.
In the end:
>It's not over, everybody betray me, I'm fed up with this world!
A somewhat clumsy, but still effective corruption arc, a proper fall from grace. Audiences just weren't prepared, as you pointed out. Bravo Wiseau.
>>
One of my favorite meta jokes is how Lisa is meant to be this seductress who lures Mark into affair, but Wiseau cast this woman who's kind of dumpy and plain, despite still being mildly attractive. It'd be one thing if she was a really good actress but she isn't, even accounting for how stilted and weird Wiseau's dialogue is. Wonder if she's just the first one who agreed to get her tits out for the sex scene, or agreed to do those scenes at all
>>
>>217762571
The things people find funny they find prestigious when coding indicates some kind of surreality or symbolic emotional conveyence; i.e. normative values must conform coding. Wiseau simply wrote his own script with his own ideas and was punished because of agnosticism to coding. Some other examples of movies being criticized for their coding include the brotherhood of the wolf and lucy. With the room, audiences find the immigrant experience incongruous with their socially prescribed decadence pro forma which is indicated in reviews which must dehumanize tommy wiseau, his acting or composition.

Fuck out of here, it's a shitty soap opera subplot with a comically amateurish execution that serves as nothing more than a vanity project vehicle for some weird vaguely foreign dude who has money to spend. Next you're going to tell me that Neil Breen is a misunderstood genius.

The independent theatre in my city still lives of off screening this movie half a dozen times a year and Rock Horror in October. Last I checked looks like they pretty much get the full 150 or so seats full every time it screens.

I remember thinking around that time that Doug was kinda losing his touch. Everything that's funny in his review of The Room comes directly from that movie, and his own bits and reactions either add little to nothing of comedic value or it actively detracts, especially the Channel Awesome cameos. He was funny for a while, but his range was limited, and I think it started to really show around this time.

You forgot that based Tommy was paying for Denny's college and Lisa's mom's cancer treatment
Denny was crying when he found out what happened to Johnny. Lisa was bored and wanted to monkey branch to Greg, but even he knew it was fucked
The problem with empathy is that there are many more people who happily take advantage of others peoples empathy. NGOs, various religious organizations and other volunteer work would not exist if people were as selfish as you proclaim they are.
Tommy has too much empathy, integrity and self accountability to dehumanize others. Empathy and letting people take advantage of you are not the same thing, and that is where Tommy has gone tragically wrong.
Here's the thing about empathy: when you're too empathetic, people will take advantage of you, they'll cry crocodile tears while they beg you to gradually destroy your own life inch, by inch

There's an entire book about it. Tommy wrote The Room as a response to failing in his attempted acting career. The movie was a Tennessee Williams style play that was converted to a movie. Tommy was attempting to start his career with his own money

>Tommy Wiseau thought he was making A Streetcar Named Desire.
according to greg he and tommy saw the talented mr. ripley when it came out and tommy said “that film proves great movies can still be made… i will make a movie like this”.
>>

>>217761532
This is what Tommy wants people to believe since achieving cult notoriety but I’m afraid it’s just not the case because his later attempts to capture the same lightning in a bottle hilarious bad movie phenomenon all fell flat on their face. The problem is that while he’s now able to somewhat “laugh along” with people at the movie, he himself actually doesn’t have the slightest clue WHY it’s so funny and what drew people to it in the first place. When Tommy watches the room he still just sees a straight up tragic hard drama odyssey that’s played completely straight and movingly.

The moral that Tommy was trying to tell us is that it's better for men to go their own way and not let people use you or parasite from your success
>>
>>
>>217765384
No he wasn’t. Have you ever seen how Tommy responds to any questions at all about how he funded The Room? Even the least confrontational ones that accept his narrative as fact and go along with his version of events? Sketchy is an understatement but if we want to talk about parasites leeching off others then go right on ahead I guess

just because he's a one hit wonder doesn't mean it's not fake/manufactured.
why does tommy play up his accent in the room and his media appearances? there's footage without the heavy accent.
>>
also how does everyone here think they know what's going on in his head? i know people who are addicted to tv and movies think acting is a crazy skill that takes years to develop but it's really not.
to fool the average person, it doesn't take much.
>>
>>217766328
>there's footage without the heavy accent.
And how many years apart is that footage vs. when he shot the room? I know a guy from high school who had a thick accent and when I met him again years later, he sounded like an American. Dude hired voice coaches to make his speech sound more natural. You can do that. Tommy probably did that too to some degree.

Neil Breen is unironically a genius and his movies are incredible. I don't mean in some sort of esoteric 2deep4u way, I mean they are the pure distillation of some nerdy kid making home movies growing up and having enough disposable income that he can continue to produce similar short films that are just about him being a leather jacket wearing sunglasses at night psychic hacker fighting the illuminati while he pays random women to run around and flirt with him in his garage. It's beautiful and I wish we had more shameless outsider art like it.

I thought the running theory was Wiseau isn't his real name and he was a Bosnian warlord in the 90s then changed his identity and fled to America to avoid prosecution for war crimes? The money supposedly comes from all he looted during the war
